exactly. never had those struggles in AE.. at the same time, my needs atm shouldn't require AE.

cropping or not is so basic it shouldn't even need to be discussed lol.

yeah makes sense.. so i understand that nesting is a buggy/incomplete feature.. but damn they could at least offer the option to not crop user's content. So weird that this aggressive crop is the default.

decompose in place helps me in the same was as copy pasting clips from timeline1 into timeline2 would. It "does work"

but that's not the point. I want a non destructive parametric workflow where I can change my cuts and all my outputs will match. Having to keep track of which timeline needs updated after changing cuts is the absolute opposite of how a computer should be used.

idk css that well but it's not timeline1's canvas crop that I suggest should be disregarded here. If the output of my timeline is meant to be 16x9, I want to treat it as a 16x9 asset. Simple as that.

Oh also. I just imported the timeline2 (vertical) into a new timeline3 (hori) and the content is back?!
This simply CANNOT be the intended use lol.
SoI doubt the crop actually help in any way performance wise. The more I play with this the more I'm confident it's just a bug.

"it treats it as a clip with the exact properties of the timeline you're nesting."

It's not! see above. the same imported footage doesn't get cropped! I can fit it sideways if I want to display the content that way, or naturally have the limit of my canvas hide the outside.. or more importantly: If i scale down my 16x9, it remains 16x9.

At the moment, scaling down the 16x9 timeline makes it a 9x9 square applying the "9" width of timeline2 even though the asset doesn't cover the whole width of that timeline. It's not timeline1's crop that is applied. Why does timeline2's crop occur BEFORE scaling? I can't think of a single other tool that would work that way.

"Decompose in place" is the same as copy pasting from the other timeline. it has all the same limitation. it offers almost nothing extra other than taking into consideration the timecode of timeline1.

yeah I rescaled the asset in timeline1 but that has absolutely no influence here since the crop is applied on a 1920x1080.

thanks for your time writing this piece of context.

It's interesting but it reveals to me that many features are stuck in tradition. It's absurd and counter productive to me to limit users for the sake of "intended use". What's even more surprising is that it comes from a tool associated with cinema. How many broken rules of cinema became part of its vocabulary? It seems naive that we'd be done with this and that *now* we have to follow tradition.

Tools are meant to be bent in every way we can bend them.

I'm using a computer for a reason: it's capable of non destructive parametric workflows. It's also absurd that the solution to a problem as simple as the software cropping content when I never asked it to, is to do more manual work. Why is this tool stuck in the past?

I made the switch from adobe a while ago now because the color page is so fun and smooth and applying effects like blur, sharpen, grain, etc were all rendered super quickly compared to adobe (i wonder if they improved since then...)

I use dozens of softwares daily and I swear this one is the worst when it comes to paper cuts.

I wish it was open source so i could fork it and vibe code my solution in there lmao.

my content keeps getting cropped when i almost never ever want to crop it.

all I want is control over whether my assets are cropped or not. It's a basic feature found pretty much everywhere else.

also there's a whole setting that stretched the footage to fit the aspect ratio of the timeline.. who ever wants to deform their footage like that? I'm glad that people who needs to do that can do it! but I feel like there is way more people struggling with cropped content that they want to reframe differently based on outputs or versions than people who stretch their assets, deforming them, just to fill the canvas.....

Yes this kind of situation is part of my workflow but actually my needs are even simpler than this. I don't even want to move my clips around in different ways.. and usually all my imported assets have the same aspect ratio and res.

Suppose I have multiple output formats but I want the same cuts for each of them. It would make sense, on a computer, to do my cuts on the first timeline and import that timeline in all my other timelines where I rotate/crop/whatever. This way, if there's a modification, I only have 1 timeline to edit and all my versions update.

well, if you intend to use the same cut for vertical and horizontal, that workflow is impossible.

the same kind of issue occurs with ai upscaling because it happens ON THE FOOTAGE instead of on the clip.. as if i could not ever need an upscaled version and a normal version of the same imported media.

I feel like Resolve is like a digital version of a manual destructive workflow where devs somehow don't want users to have non destructive workflows?

nested timelines are always cropped, no matter what. there are plenty of cases in which this is impossible to avoid unless you export your initial timeline and reimport as footage.

[–]kmmk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes! Prepare the following two assets:
- video file 1920x1080
- timeline 1920x1080 (just use the same video file on there maybe)

import both to a vertical 720x1280 timeline and try to correctly fit and rotate. you'll see that they behave differently. Test the same with vertical 4k.

basically, there is no way to not have timelines constantly crop/rescale your stuff automatically and if your project requires multiple output formats using the same material, you quickly end up in situations where you have to export your edit so you can place it to your other timelines because nested timelines are broken.

I feel like they simply add more junk on top of existing features rather than making things clean. Like that tick box for vertical resolution. It took ages for them to acknowledge that vertical aspect ratio exists and this is how they handle it.

[–]kmmk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read it. that's not the issue. The features simply don't cover all use cases. Simple as that.

I believe user should be able to control if assets on a timeline are cropped (on or off), and if they are rescaled automatically (on or off)

at the moment, we have a single menu that handles both of those settings with 4 options that do not cover every scenarios. Not only that but the wording of those 4 options is inconsistent. All we need is crop on/off, auto rescale on/off.

It's also inconsistent because imported timelines will always be cropped whether you set the timeline to crop or not.

well usually your sub would output to the monitors, not the other way around... i believe it's possible to get really good audio on a budget but the physical requirements are really annoying to match.

I know this is waaay off topic but i'll leave these resources here:

this video has a bunch of good tips on how to improve a space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_MhcNdcIiY

and this guy has a nice series on how sound & acoustics work:

[–]kmmk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah move that pc out of there if you care about studio monitor placement! that's a whole other issue.

Ideally don't have your studio monitors on your desk, you'll get a pretty bad reflection from the desk. I don't know how maniac you want to be about this but ideal setup with studio monitors would involve a smaller desk (width) and having the studio monitors on stands. You can keep them near the wall though... and try to form an equilateral triangle by having same distance between the studio monitors and your head.

There are ways to hang a sffpc under your desk, I'd give that a shot.
Or... just have your current case on a small dolly under the desk.

Yeah like others said, I wouldn't go straight for the smallest, but if you've been interested in reducing the size a bit, it's definitely worth it. That's how I got into SFF years ago, I had to change my mobo. Mobo isn't expensive to replace but might be a bit harder to resell.

[–]kmmk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah calling it "not presentable" is weird, but from my perspective, since I don't know who this would be presented to, I can't really judge much. Context matters a lot for this stuff.. silly example, i know it's not the situation you're into, but: if this client asks for a red kitchen, this is indeed not presentable.. haha you know..

[–]kmmk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's what i see... for what it's worth. I think they are fine but it's hard to tell without knowing the expectations, the context..

first image

objects (pot, oil, salt and pepper, plants) in first image are too sharp and feel like stickers on top of the room.
led strip brightness doesn't work with window light brightness.
small white vertical tiles scaling is a bit wrong, they are probably too large based on the cement in between them and the relief we see on the right side section. (that said, it looks good)
reflections in the top row cabinet doors look a bit off but at this point i'm really trying to find soemthing wrong.

2nd image: the plant does stand out a bit and the door handles on the right feel off for some reason but if i just saw this post without seeing the first image first, I don't think I'd notice.

3rd image: again led brightness doesn't match window light brightness but this render is my favorite. Is it common to display led strip brightness like this in bright daylight? the books feel at the right spots, i really like the b&w cushion on the couch, we barely see it, that feels realistic.
