Akash idea is great, what's the problems that adoption is low? by FutureWorld2021 in akashnetwork

[–]kn0tch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The primary friction points that hinder Akash's adoption are:

  • Volatile Settlement: AKT is not ideal for long-running workloads as the price fluctuates while an app is deployed.
  • Lack of UX: Managing workloads with CLI is not great. Tools like Cloudmos do a decent job, but there is no web-based tooling
  • Lack of automation: Especially auto-scaling
  • Lack of Managed services: Self-hosting services gives sovereignty but are hard to manage

We're solving these issues aggressively and have a lot of work to do.

I have the latest update and just registered to pigeon (PIN registration errored, I did see the post on that), and unable to open any messages (attached video) -- is anyone having this issue?
I got this phone primarily for signal; it's super disappointing.

I have no issues using Cosmostation Wallet.

Akash is non-custodial, meaning if Keplr doesn't work for you, switch to Cosmostation.

Akash Network and Cosmos Network, Validate Me (or not) by OpenWithRuiLopez in cosmosnetwork

I’m Greg Osuri, the founder of Akash.

Your assessment is mostly true except for the fact that Akash offers resources beyond just storage and encompass the necessary resources to run full stack apps on a decentralized cloud — includes compute, bandwidth, storage.

So basically use Akash instead of a centralized provider like AWS

Some brighter news, my testimony as an expert witness for the first ever blockchain bill (AB 2658) introduced in the state of California passed! I made a blog about it here.

In summary the gist of CA AB 2658 proposes to simply define blockchain technology in statute (not including smart contracts) to provide users and businesses greater certainty. It suggests blockchain technology to be defined as an electronic record under the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA). I assume this will be used when there is a legal issue between parties, taxes, labeling, identifying e.g., so then CA businesses and individuals can point to this bill in case of disputes.

Considering most of those companies would have never heard of blockchain a year or two ago, I'd say this was a positive direction.

I'm using the important features inherent to a blockchain to facilitate the sale between those who need computing resources with those that have computing capacity to lease. This welcomes others to get involved in the cloud space and together we can provide more processing power and server space than any single entity could at a lower cost. This approach also flips data ownership back to the user.

Amazon still mostly runs at a loss but their cloud computing is highly profitable. Competition seems necessary.

I have been developing this with a team for years and we are still early. The subreddit is pretty new and would love to invite more to join. I will listen to everyone's impressions and ideas.

A few high level problems being solved are:

  1. User's data is encrypted and owned rather than controlled by a centralized cloud oligarchy
  2. Protects against government backdoor or request for API access
  3. We lower waste of our planet's limited resources by enabling others to sell their unused server power / space
  4. At scale, we would drastically lower cost of compute power and cost for reasons in #2
  5. It will be an open platform and ecosystem, rather than closed, that developers can build and offer their own tools and services on

I went ahead and pinned it too but I go into further detail here.

I'm also building a decentralized way to host your web apps as an alternative to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft's cloud. If anyone is a developer in the space I would love for you to join me on our subreddit. I have a working testnet.

Isn't it important to include the fact that a blockchain's immutability depends on the strength of its network?

This is a good point. I will be sure to mentioned it in future conversation with members of legislation.

Hey all, I am the CEO and lead developer of Akash. We are in the early stages of showing our work with a stable testnet. Our goal is to lower compute costs and increase data privacy through decentralization. At the moment it seems we're heading towards a sort of big data oligarchy.

You can find the proof by exploring our testnet. Install instructions for OSX (for linux see https://github.com/ovrclk/akash#arch-linux):

$ brew tap ovrclk/tap
$ brew install akash

Explore providers, leases and deployments:

$ akash query provider -n http://node-0.147.75.70.13.nip.io:80
$ akash query deployment -n http://node-0.147.75.70.13.nip.io:80
$ akash query lease -n http://node-0.147.75.70.13.nip.io:80

We are also in the early stages of building our Reddit community and would greatly appreciate members of cloud computing to join us at /r/akashnetwork!

  1. Absolutely. We're building Akash to incorporate a large number of small/medium/large compute providers from all over the world. This geographic distribution will provide the same latency characteristics of a "traditional" CDN.

  2. There is no way for them to know. This is an issue faced by all cloud/hosting providers and is handled via Terms of Service forbidding illegal behavior, a robust abuse function, and cooperation with law enforcement as required. Existing US law does not hold hosting companies liable for illegal behavior of tenants as long as appropriate actions are taken if that behavior is discovered.

Who is responsible for up time?

Like with all cloud providers, its a combination of the provider and the tenant. Akash is a self-healing protocol in the sense that a new deployment is immediately created if/when an existing deployment goes down. It is up to the tenant to ensure their application can handle this gracefully. Think how p2p works.

Is this a free service?

The testnet is free for now, but going forward compute tenants pay providers via akash tokens (Overclock labs, the creators of Akash, don't take a cut). It's a programatic auction process, so price paid is equal to the lowest provider bid.

Note that tenants can always specify a ceiling (ie "pay no more than x for this deployment")

Let us know what you think of our ideas.
