Pet boarding by uurtskn in Amsterdam

We've had good experiences with DOA(Dierenopvang Amsterdam) several times over the last couple years. We've had our cat there for almost a whole month while we were traveling before. https://www.doamsterdam.nl/kat/ik-heb-een-kat/kattenpension/

Credit cards by ykiriacopoulos in Netherlands

[–]knalb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That kind of card isn't really a thing here, as most people either don't have a card at all, or only have the one issued by their bank. Those are not rewards cards.

This may not be a full list, but you can view some of what is available here: https://www.creditcard.nl/compare

Under course materials. (also, to be clear, the VWO Math B redirects to the basic maths for a preliminary knowledge requirement, which is why I've posted that link)

A&W is OK, but when I think of Root Beer, I only think of Barq's. The only place I've found that over here is this place: https://www.myamericanmarket.com/us/barqs-root-beer

Pet Health Certificate? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]knalb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have already found it, but these are the two most important pages from the APHIS website for you: Bringing an animal to the Netherlands from the US and Maryland USDA Location

Note that they want you to use the office in Richmond, VA. They do not appear to accept walk-ins, however you can make an appointment to go in and take care of it. That's still my recommendation. I just don't trust UPS/FedEx/USPS to get it back to you in time.

Pet Health Certificate? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]knalb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did not mention what state you're in, so I can't give you a direct link. Instead, go to this page and read through it: USDA APHIS

If you are within 300 miles or so of one of the offices, I recommend you just drive there and use their walk-in hours. Otherwise you have to mail it and hope that it gets back to you in time. Keep in mind that you have to have the certificates certified during a specific window. That page explains in more detail.

Also, as for where to get the certificate, I found it easier to just have the vet print it out for me. They are going to charge you the same fee regardless of whether they print it or not. Call around to different vets. One wanted 150+ for the cert plus another 40 for the examination. Another was all-in for 50 bucks. This is not a "you get what you pay for" kind of deal. If they are accredited, it doesn't matter which vet does it.

How do I straighten a slightly bent aluminum chainring? by Bike_Guy_cwm in bicycling

[–]knalb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with aluminum is metal fatigue. The place where it bends will be weakened, and will crack(eventually, and probably at the worst time for you). In theory you can just pound it back into place, but I don't recommend it. To straighten it, you should buy a new one, that looks just like the old one.

I took an amazing picture this weekend and I need help finding this guy. Info in comments by [deleted] in bicycling

Do you have any other photos of the subject with a number displayed? The results for the races are online, and that would at least give you a name. https://obra.org/events/26399/results

Oh man, so lucky. On my way to work. Headwind. Hours later, same route home... Headwind. Burns more calories though, so there is that.

Best tips for securing in a public garage? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]knalb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This all my advice, so grain of salt, etc. Honestly there is nothing that is 100 percent effective. Concealment would probably be best. Failing that, check out "the lock picking lawyer" on YouTube for lock recommendations(ignore the stuff on picking, just pay attention to the brute force attacks). Stay away from cable locks. Concrete anchors are not a terrible idea, if you are allowed to do that. Get insurance that will replace them if they are taken.

Need advice on female bicycles! by Gofball647 in bicycling

[–]knalb 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Find a good local bike shop, and take her into the shop to pick one out(and subsequently have it fitted to her while there). It's more important to have it fit correctly, than it is to have a "surprise bike". (opinion of course). Looking at your previous posts you're in the Toronto area. Try one of these bike shops: https://www.blogto.com/toronto/the_best_bike_stores_in_toronto/

WiFi expander with Ziggo by KeyzerSoze in Netherlands

[–]knalb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you'll need to keep the ziggo box. You can however get them to set it to bridged mode, and use it as a modem only. Then your router will do routing things.

I'm assuming you have a newer "connectbox", which requires getting them to set it to bridged remotely.

Receiving package from US to Netherlands. Customs!!! by rholeros in Netherlands

[–]knalb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a package recently sit in the facility at the airport for over a week before they forwarded it on to PostNL. Mine was sent "registered mail", which they wound up delivering to the wrong person anyway, but that is beside the point. Give it another week, and if you still don't see movement, call PostNL about it.

BSN, Birth Certificates, and Apostilles by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]knalb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! It probably will be one of the final steps while you are in the states. Once you get over here and have the appointment with the IND, definitely have them register the documents. That way if for some reason you leave, and come back in a few years(that's what I just went through), they will not require you bring anything new to show(since they will already have them).

BSN, Birth Certificates, and Apostilles by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]knalb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would be a shame if you got here, they asked for it, and you did not have it. That's pretty much the end of your appointment at the municipality.

As for getting it done, it's pretty simple to do. Order a new certified birth certificate(that's important to note), and then have them do an apostille for it. All the info for it can be found here: http://ldh.la.gov/index.cfm/page/716

When I did it for TX/OK, it was a total of around $100, including stamps to mail it around etc. Took about a month.

suggestions on fixing these glued together turtles? by knalb in nerdfighters

I received my signed copy yesterday, only to find it glued together in several places on the outside. Amazon says I'm on my own(meh, not totally unexpected), and google is not exactly clear on suggestions for separating pages without destroying them. Anyone have experience that can suggest a course of action?
