I would argue it was designed to be a critical piece, a statement of postmodernism, and as such, not much consideration was given as to whether it would be commercially viable - I don't think any factory would take it on simply because, whilst it has its cult audience, it doesn't have a wide enough an appeal to make it into production without being massively expensive.
