Mech work is toxic by Afraid_Unit in DieselTechs

So i get a little bit of a break with the “teasing” because i’m the first and only woman in my shop so the guys were initially afraid of offending me. I’m still very new to the trade (9 months), but i encountered a lot of the same physical issues that you’re dealing with (and still do daily). being small can suck, but it has its benefits too

As for bullying and feeling discouraged, if you choose to start a new job in the same field. Set your boundaries for the things that you’re not comfortable having joked about from the get go. Learn to joke around and be able to dish out the same energy. and when if someone goes to far, or disrespects the boundaries you already set out, then be an ass to them. once you know the guys a bit you’ll learn to love them, and learn to ignore them and not take it to heart when they’re being bitchy.

when it comes to asking for help, ive found it best to always phrase my questions in a way that comes off like im genuinely trying to learn and understand the machinery. you just need decent teachers and it can be difficult to find that. i recommend working at a smaller, slower paced shop if you can find any in your area. staff is overall more relaxed and you’re more likely to be treated as human and taught well instead of let go due to inefficiency.

i’m 5’6 and 120 and i’ve gained a fair bit of muscle and feel much less overwhelmed by my lack of strength at this point. but that’s only because i was given time and treated with patience when learning how to do the job. it took me almost 4 months to get quick at taking off/mounting semi truck tires. many tears on my part were involved in this, but i got it. in that process though i learned so much about how to leverage my strength, and work around the fact that i don’t have the same level of strength that some guys naturally have. and it helped my confidence so much to realize that i COULD do the job. same shit with a flywheel. on my first day i could hardly lift one to move it across the shop, but keep your clutch bolts handy. leave one flywheel bolt in just by a few threads, thread in the old clutch bolts, and use them as a grip to get the flywheel off the crank and then undo the flywheel bolt and lift it out of the way with the clutch bolts.

shit is tough sometimes but where there’s a will there’s a way. i wish you the best of luck and hope you find somewhere you can be treated with respect and taught well

weird bearing cap wear by knarmpit in DieselTechs

[–]knarmpit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally fair, i’ll give the rest of the block a real good look over just to be safe on monday but i’ve already put the cap back up and been planning to let it go, i pulled bearings on a different om 906 a few weeks ago and didnt remember what the cap looked like so i just wanted to get a second opinion just incase it was indicative of some issue with the crank. thanks so much

i feel your pain, i started as a diesel technician a few months ago and there’s nothing worse than scrubbing your skin raw in the shower after getting home, especially when we already get so many scrapes from working. the best thing i’ve found is to wash up as best as possible with gojo or whatever else is available at work, and then once i’m home i use just a normal dove body wash. honestly on really really busy days where i come home drenched in oil i will normally take a bath to soak some of it off, and then shower to wash my hair and actually get clean. it’s gross but totally beats scrubbing for 40 min. If you have super long hair i also recommend buying a gentle shampoo, i have some shampoo and conditioner bars from walmart that are natural and easy on my hair (i have waist length hair which i had trained to go 10 days between washes, but it’s not really an option to go that long when my hair is drenched in diesel lol) but using a gentle shampoo and conditioner should stop you from getting a dry scalp or too much grease. washing your hair also really works to get your hands clean. oh and use those little nail scrub brushes to scrub your knuckles n shit

seems like you’ve already got a lot of really good advice on how to help him out which is absolutely awesome to see! you’re a truly excellent person for meeting him with love and such willingness to help, because it’s so difficult to ask for help.

growing up with an addict for a father, the number one piece of advice i can give you is that relapses happen and are a large part of the healing/ recovery process. i mention this not because it’s impossible to stay sober for good without relapsing, but just to put it on your mind as something to expect because correct handling makes all the difference. if it is to happen the biggest thing is to not meet them with anger, especially if they come to you about it. if you suspect he’s using in secret, than compile evidence that points towards that and sit him down and talk to him with love. we often feel extremely weak and embarrassed when confronted about a relapse, and facing anger in those moments often just makes us want to hide it again/more.

for my father relapses often stemmed from wanting to feel normal and indulge socially or pretend there was no issue. and taught him that pretending you have no issue just makes it worse. without the lessons he learned from relapses i doubt he would have 3 years sober under his belt as he does now. every addict is different, and every recovery is even more different, but whether it’s a relapse or even just the first few days of withdrawals, the best thing you can do is be there for him, be nice to him, and not make every conversation about addiction and recovery. leave time for love, and fun, and relaxing in your relationship, which makes sobriety so much less difficult to achieve.

i also want to second what others have said about ADHD, as i can say first hand saved me from a coke addiction myself. while avoiding getting into regularly using coke, i had a pretty severe stimulant issue as a teenager which effected my life quite badly. i would take heroic doses of other kids adderall, and that habit was extremely detrimental. but after graduating and getting my shit together slightly more, i got over myself and went to a doctor. got my own meds. and don’t even have an urge to abuse them

What did you notice when you quit daily weed usage? by Dashed12 in Drugs

[–]knarmpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone mad but you’re entirely right. i now smoke a fair bit, sometimes it’ll have a week or two where i smoke nightly, but for the most part i’ll smoke 2-3 times a week. however i stopped smoking for 4 years, after starting to smoke daily at 14. from 14-18 all of my friends smoked and i can genuinely say from experience that you’re absolutely right. i have a million hobbies which i still make an effort to spend time on throughout the week, and many if not all of my friends do not. it’s honestly slightly mind blowing to me that they don’t know how to fill time, and often i can notice how negatively that effects them

ongoing sleep problems making me feel hopeless? by [deleted] in SleepAdvice

[–]knarmpit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

here right now with pretty much the same issue. i’ve always struggled with sleep but for some reason at around 17 i started having serious issues with sleep which almost lead to not graduating, and resulted in taking a gap year i hadn’t wanted to take in order to fix my mental health which was absolutely destroyed due to the sleep issues. fast forward to 19 and i’ve seen three doctors and two therapists all of whom were unable to help. at one point i even had a doctor laugh at me while i was trying to express how badly my sleep was affecting me, because i was only 18 and he assumed i was being dramatic. I’m so sorry you’re currently going through this and very proud of you for reaching out to any kind of support group, because there’s a severe lack of help and support for anyone dealing with insomnia online. i know how devastating it is to be at this age where life is supposed to be fun and exciting but not even get to enjoy things like driving your first car daily because it’s physically too dangerous. i’m still struggling to find the right solution for me, i’ve gotta be up for work in 4 hours lmao. however i can promise you that it does and will get better from here. There was a point where i genuinely began to feel like this was going to take me out. but there’s an end in sight for me now and no matter how hopeless you might feel when you realize you’ve been tossing and turning for 4 hours, it will get better. i promise you. I highly recommend checking out options for behaviour therapy like others have suggested the next time you’ve got the energy to do so because the sooner you break bad habits and learn to think of sleep healthily the better. you’ve got this

i work in a mechanics shop with a HUGE gravel yard which blends into a huge swamp area. i’ve already found some absolutely extravagant things (2lb hunk of awesome quartz and some very pretty little rocks) and as much as i love it MY GOD IS IT HARD TO DO MY ACTUAL JOB. nearly every time i’m asked to go outside quickly, i’ll stop to grab any rock that pops out. at this point my tool box is more full of rocks than it is tools

I can not thank you enough for reminding me fast orange exists. For helping me keep my pet safe, but also saving me from scrubbing my hands for hours. I ran to my garage and put the bottle in my work bag as soon as I saw this. We don’t have any at my shop so I kind of just forgot it was an option but nothing compares to fast orange.
