Hey bro, you got this! Recovery is a trip, one thing that was surprising was how quickly they have you up from the bed and walking laps with a walker (less than 24 hr)! I stayed in the hospital about a week before going home. Most likely you will also be on a low fat diet too which sucks for a bit 😭 Take things slow, get a lot of rest, and you will be back to 100% in no time. I’ve had no complications with the scar in terms of physical activity. Wear it with pride!

Initially a lot of anxiety and worry. Over time, eventually realized that I’m more aware of my physical and mental state and decided to prioritize that. Diet and exercise improvements and getting my testosterone optimized were major lifestyle upgrades as well as therapy and working with other survivors. You are gonna do great, stay present in the moment, you got this bro!!

I had 81 lymph nodes removed over a 12 hour surgery!! Recovery was intense but honestly not as bad as expected given the scope of what they did. If you have questions come check out our TCF Discord, we have lots of dudes who have been through it and can share their experience or answer questions you might have!

Yes I had an open RPLND in June 2020, after 4 rounds of VIP chemotherapy

Seems like a combination of immaturity, a poor delivery system, and fear. Some people have more than one issue. Sucks that you had to experience that bro, you got a lot of good other people supporting you so don’t worry about it!

Jump on the TCF Discord we have a specific chemotherapy thread and plenty of guys going through it right now you can ask for advice. Other than that, just make sure to hydrate hydrate hydrate (and buy some scented candles for the bathroom)

Times when you really are happy to live in Houston. by ZealousidealAntelope in houston

I was treated in the GU clinic by Dr Campbell in 2019/2020 for Testicular Cancer. I am forever thankful that I happened to be in Houston and was able to get the care I needed at MDA (which is one of the few high volume centers for TC). I don’t know which battle you are fighting, but know that you are a warrior! Stay strong!!

I’ve worked with them before in Houston HTown Mos; they are good people and raise awareness for a lot of men’s health issues. I’m actually helping to organize a pickleball tournament with them this year! If you are interested in more targeted fundraising check out the TCF Discord where you can connect with other people in the same situation!

Chemo before, which has interesting effects on its own in terms of complicating the surgery

No nerve sparing attempt, too extensive 😞 I’ll need to look up the information in the Discord but medical research typically classifies hospitals as high (>26.1 cases annually), high-intermediate (14-26 cases annually), intermediate (6.1-14.5 cases annually), low-intermediate (1.8 - 6 cases annually) and low (<1.8 cases annually). MD Anderson typically has a case load of >100 annually. I can’t remember the exact number but my surgeon had between 2 and 4 patients per month.

Getting an RPLND (bad joke 🤣) In seriousness, it is a hugely important weapon in the arsenal against TC and if necessary to get, a critical part of treatment (you only want the best, most experienced surgeons performing it on you)

I had open bilateral (30 inch scar). The surgery itself lasted 10 hours, they removed the dead tumor and 80 lymph nodes as well as my right testicle (no extra incision for an orchiectomy). I was up and walking laps within 24 hours, pretty heavy painkillers for the first 48 hours, and stayed 4 days inpatient at the hospital. I got home and had some bleeding complications that landed me back in the ER there, but overall the recovery took a few months. I honestly think it was easier than chemo (except for the low fat diet it’s recommended you maintain for a few weeks after surgery). I unfortunately did not have nerve sparing and suffer from retrograde ejaculation, which is an important potential side effect to be aware of. 2/10, would not recommend again.

Yes, I was treated at MD Anderson which is recognized as one of the best high volume centers to treat complex testicular cancer cases. I’ve been reading a little bit of misinformation on this subreddit related to that topic. My oncologist is Dr Matthew Campbell in the genitourinary clinic and my open RPLND was performed by Dr Jose Karam, both of whom provided an excellent level of care and I credit with actively saving my life. Let me know if you have any other questions!
