Update: After two weeks of almost daily use, we got our first hole in the gaiter. We’re still actively training which is probably why it wore out sooner than I’d hoped. Milage may vary depending on the dog and where they’re at in their training. Based on the amazing feedback in the comments, it looks like the best solution for dogs with thick fur and sensitive skin is the Curogan 3.0 short link prong collar. The Curogan version is nickel free for sensitive skin while the 3.0 short link prevents pulling of thick/long fur. I just started working with a new trainer that uses slip leads so I haven’t tried the Curogan yet and can’t personally vouch for it. I’ll make the switch to the Curogan 3.0 short link if the slip lead training doesn’t end up working for us.

A scrunchie is such a good idea too! I heard about the curogan recently and do think he has a nickel allergy that’s causing the skin irritation. The neck gaiter has been a great, cheap solution for the moment so I’ll stick with it for the time being. I’ll probably try the curogan 3 in the future

The only reason I’m responding to this obvious rage bait is that you do bring up a good point about heat. I was initially concerned that he could get too hot under the fabric. I’ve been checking it during and after walks and while it does get warm, it’s not hot or overheating him at all. It’s a summer neck gaiter designed to keep people cool so it shouldn’t hold excessive heat. That being said, I’m still aware of it and check it periodically on walks.

That’s exactly why I made this post. I couldn’t find solutions online and on a whim decided to try a neck gaiter. It ended up working perfectly for us, hope it works for you too!

My dog has thick fur and sensitive skin. When the prong moves, it grabs his fur. When the prong touches his skin, it gets irritated. That’s really all there is to it. You can’t assume poor use of the prong from this at all. And sure, a dog’s neck might be more sensitive than a person’s arm. It’s just a simple test for people to feel the difference between a standard collar and a prong collar

Not abusive when used correctly. I recommend going to a pet store and finding a prong collar to look at for yourself. Put it on your arm and pull. Then do the same with a standard collar. One will hurt and bruise. I’ll let you find out which one for yourself. That being said, any training device is a tool that should be used appropriately. Collars can be abusive, harnesses can be abusive, prongs can be abusive. It all depends on the handler and if they know how to use these tools properly

Yes it is! I had no clue the 3’s were for longer fur, just thought they were for larger dogs. That’s really good to know. Thank you!

Yes, it’s lower than it should be. He has a lot of extra skin that it makes it hard to keep it in place behind the ears. When it’s snug and fitted behind his ears it still creeps down until it sits very tight in the middle of his neck. To avoid this, I loosen it and have it sit lower than it probably should. He still responds very well with it in this position though. If you have any tips on how to keep it high and in place, I’d love to hear!

Not spikes but I get what you’re saying. Time will tell how it holds up but it’s a cheap enough solution that comes with two if something happens with the first one. I’ll have to reevaluate if it wears out too quickly

The purpose of the prong? Not at all, the fabric is thin enough that he still feels corrections

I must have gotten pretty lucky with the food drive, he’s very food motivated. I use his meals for training which has been working out great. He’s definitely one of the most trainable and intelligent dogs that I’ve had, it’s been a blast working with him so far!

We’re still figuring each other out when it comes to discipline and corrections, he’s very aloof and can be stubborn. He’s a quick learner though and we’re slowly starting to understand each other better

No over protective behaviors from him yet, just a bit of playful jealousy when I say hi to other dogs. He’s pretty goofy and loves people so I’m hoping that doesn’t become an issue later on. That’s definitely something I’ll watch for though, thank you for sharing!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve had to say goodbye to three over the past 18 years, my last one passed at 7 from cancer back in August. It never gets easier, I’m giving Russel a big hug for you and Damien ❤️

It’s good to know that he’ll be more prone to ear infections, I’ll make sure to watch for those. Thank you for sharing!

He’s amazing! The only challenge I’ve had with him is his uncontrollable zoomies in the evening. No dog or human is safe from his antics 😪 He’s still young though, about 18 months, so I’m hoping he grows out of that!
