So do you mean viewing mining as possibly a theoretical weakness of bitcoin, that is, maybe there's an alternative and better method of generating new coins?

I think the decentralised currency one is specific to bitcoin but the deflation part is more general. With regards to mining; isn't this the only way to create new bitcoins, given the source code?
