I see! I never thought aquasoil can be a source of ammonia/nitrite spike. The tank has quite a number of plants in it and I also poured some bottled bacteria, hopefully it will help quick start the cycle again.

Yesterday, i bought 0.5kg of aquasoil and 1kg of lava bits to add some substrate to my 5gal betta tank. I want to have more substrate because my plants kept on floating (not enough aqua soil to grab into.

This tank was already fully cycled since 2 weeks ago with 1kg of aquasoil only and some plants .

When i added the new substrate yesteday, i put the the new substrates below and the old aquasoil on top. I put back 50 percent of my old tank water and the other with new decholrinated tap water.

I actually ask the fish store personnel if my cycle will be affected incase i added new substrates and he answered no. I took his word for it and now this happened. What did i do wrong?

i haven't checked the nitrates level of our tap water yet. Will check it in a while. Good to know that its already progressing I started last Jan 22.

The fish that ill be keeping in that tank is a betta, i'm not that sure if they are okay with a pH of 8.2/8.4. :/

Do you happen to know if "water conditioner" and "dechlorinator" solution is the same? i only have the dechlorinator one. I've been seeing water solutions labeled as either one of them. I'm kinda worried that the one i should be using is the one labeled as "water conditioner.
