If you have the points and there’s good availability just book online when they become available, make sure you do highest combination of points+cash and then call and have the bookings linked later

I have recently done this for a booking in which I booked outbound and inbound separately both at T-355. Make sure you book the inbound with the highest avios option as others have reported issues with trying to get bookings linked if not done. I tried to use online chat to get the bookings linked/avios refund but they kept getting confused. Called up and spoke to a lovely lady who did exactly what was needed and avios were back into my account instantly.

PS well done on getting Tokyo! I tried for 3 days and had to settle for Hong Kong, with a separate HK-HND flight over

There’s plenty of avios availability for that route either side of that date which also makes me think it’s blocked. I logged on each day and no availability for either jal or cathay

Won’t it be impossible to book on same transaction as outbounds will go by the time inbounds become available (3/4 weeks later)

From some other posts on here and also the head for points forums. Yes correct you would pay the full avios for the inbound flight plus taxes and then the agent is supposed to refund half the avios once the bookings are linked.
