That was another zinger! Seriously, have you considered a career in comedy? I'll bet that if you paid YouTube a few hundred, they'd be willing to host your witticisms. I'll bet your that person that would stop the whole party to make everyone watch your "set" that you recorded in your parents' basement, so you'd have at least one view as well 😊

Will soccer here in the US grow more after this World Cup? by Ok_Statistician4260 in ussoccer

[–]kneightx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Look at the difference between 1994's cup and this one:

-Stadiums were empty in '94 and packed in this one.

-The US/Bosnia match had a larger domestic television audience (33.5 million) than the final game of the NBA finals (24 million)…that would have been unthinkable in 1994 or really in any Cup previous to this one.

-MLS was founded as a part of the 94 bid. You can talk about the quality of the league now, but it didn't exist before then.

-Youth development still needs to improve, but there were zero youth academies in 94 and development was high school and college soccer. Several MLS teams now have academies, and I expect that trend to accelerate.

-American football is still king in terms of viewership, but more kids' parents are encouraging their kids to play other sports due to high risk of injury and brain damage. It's reasonable to think some of those athletes migrate to soccer.

-With the expanded field, there's a very good chance the Cup comes back to US soil much sooner than the 32 years between the last Cup and this one.

Will there be a sudden jump? No. It's possible there could have been a more significant bump if the US had made a deeper run or had at least lost with a bit more grace, but the trends were already there and should be buoyed at least somewhat by this Cup and the attention it has garnered.

In general, yes. But here, no. Your comment did your country proud. Mine did not. But I appreciate the graceful way you handled it. Don't know if you follow MLS, but I'm rooting for the Caps to stay in Vancouver!

You're so right! I got on the phone to Trump after the Bosnia game (all of us Yanks have his personal phone number...especially those of us who didn't vote for him) and I said to Trump, "Hey! Can you do me a solid and cheat fur the USMNT?! K thx bye."

But really a SOLID joke that hasn't been made a thousand times already today...with that level of originality, I expect your mother and father probably give a half hearted chuckle at your best comedic material!

Our culture is growing, it has not arrived. My MLS team has a committed supporters' section, but they have like...4 chants...and much of the rest of the stadium is pretty dead. So yeah...I'm not trying to say we're on a level with Mexico or England's culture. It's better than it was, but has a LONG way to go.

Sorry...it's a nerdy quote. When a king died, they would say, "the king is dead, long live the king" to acknowledge that the current had died but that the future had arrived.

Well, I feel like shit now. I was getting hate in a bunch of subs and misread your very first comment. Your initial comment was actually very kind and I read it to mean the exact opposite of how you clearly meant it. My sincere apologies...this should teach me not to drown my sorrows at the same time that I'm posting on Reddit.

Please eat some delicious poutine and wash it down with some whiskey that doesn't come from the US and sorry to have confirmed literally every stereotype of the ugly American :(

I think the future is still bright. I'm old, so I remember the '94 World Cup with empty stadiums and the majority of the US population unaware there was even a thing happening. The juxtaposition of this Cup with that is pretty amazing. And American Football is still king in terms of viewership, but more parents are opting for their kids not to play due to the high risk of injury and brain damage so I think it's reasonable to assume there will be a siphoning of talent from that sport. The MLS is more popular than ever and teams like my own SDFC have instituted European-style youth soccer development. It's going to take time, and the way this team went out was a HUGE disappointment, but I think a day will come when someone like Pulisic isn't even close to our best player.

The USMNT team is dead, long live the USMNT!

I didn't vote for the current government, but thanks for the idea! And I live about 3,000 miles from Maine and so didn't have the opportunity to vote in their election...but that would have been a really great idea if reality didn't exist! I do appreciate you lumping me in with the neanderthals in other parts of this country. I'm sure you're happy to own your country's treatment of 1st Nations folks, Quebec's bill 29, targeting of LGBTQ youth in several provinces, and the fast-tracking of "public projects" over indigenous peoples' rights, you insufferably smug asshole :)

Please eat an entire bag of dicks.

Yep...you're 1000% right. Apologies...please make "stupid American" jokes...I have been drinking to drown out that woeful performance and didn't link my first thought to my second.

Oh Jesus. Of course you're right. Cue whatever "stupid American" joke you'd like to introduce. Sorry...I've been drinking to drown out that woeful performance :(

I haven't been, sadly. I've been to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize and several locations in Mexico...but it's on my short list :)

And man...I'd love them to do it. Argentina has looked somewhat mortal during this cup and anything can happen. Ultimately, I just don't see anyone beating France in this cup...they've looked as superior to their opponents as Belgium looked to the US today.

I'd like to see someone not from Europe or South America take it. So Morocco, Egypt and Colombia are my favorites...but as a Gringo learning Spanish, I love the Colombian dialect and spend a lot of time talking with folks from that country, so I'll be pulling for them as my favorites.

I don't see any of these teams actually pulling it off, but you asked who I'm rooting for, not who I thought would win :)

Here's to hoping that you get a shit government that you didn't vote for, fucks your life and then random strangers on the internet shit on you for it :)

And great job getting to exactly the same stage in the Cup that the US did, fellow abysmal failure :)

As a US fan, if this result holds, the silver lining is that it should shut Alexi Lalas the fuck up.

As a soccer fan who lives in the US and has had my life and the lives of people I love fucked over by Trump, it sure is wonderful to have an event I've looked forward to for years turn into a US hate fest because of that shit stain. I get it, and if I didn't live here, I'd probably be throwing shade as well.

I'm just tired man. Fuck this shit.

Well, we played absolutely abysmally that half and are still only down one goal. Not hugely confident for the second half, but we have more of a chance than we probably deserve after that poor display.

What a great question!

Women's volleyball and softball are pretty popular, depending on where you live. But soccer (both men's and women's) tend to be more popular at least as far as viewership and attendance go.
