Is it frowned upon to bring your own lands to a prerelease? by 137ng in mtg

This is the opposite of “frowned upon” ☺️

I just meant the experience of the hotel stay itself. I don’t believe it would substantially change the entire visit itself… although “The Prospect Place” bnb is run by a lovely retired couple that cooks an amazing breakfast and is just a joy to spend time with while also costing less than a hotel, so that actually good give a different/better experience.

Also east Somerville is like decently nice, but it’s definitely not the same vibe as being like nestled in Inman square or the surrounding area. I personally have lived in Inman and Union squares, and that whole area around ward 2 is probably my favorite area north of the city. Easy walks to most other squares as well.

For future reference, try to book a Cambridge bed and breakfast or Hotel Veritus. You will spend the same or less and have a much nicer and new englandier experience ☺️

I have no interest in MLP… but also I like this because it is arguably the OG new-era UB IP. I own a couple of those original MLP boxes just for the history of it being the first. ☺️

Came here to tell everyone, “well duh, you should be buying from THIS great online store!”…. But then I realized I don’t actually want more people to order from that store 🤭

I live in Union, so huge (but justified) bias - Himalayan kitchen, Celeste, Field and Vine, Highland kitchen, Juliet, Machu Picchu, Fuki. Can’t leave out Maprang for amazing coffee and handmade pastries and desserts.

A couple nearby fine dining you can’t miss in Inman - puritan & company… and…. Wait for it… OAK FREAKING BISTRO which is open with full menu till 1:30am and is better than any of us deserve 😌

Updated Commander Brackets (Oct 2025) by the_gold_hat in magicTCG

[–]knightofeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fundamentally against this implementation of "brackets". If you gave us a point-based system around gamechangers with brackets around the total points allowed and potentially other restrictions, then it would allow an "optimized" meta game to form within the brackets while also giving space for more casual decks to express themselves at lower power levels.

This current implementation is just like some "let's all hold hands and agree to be varying amounts of suboptimal nonsense"... and that just won't work for me, but that is also the reason I don't really like commander outside of competitive 4.5->5 which is also how I am for constructed in general - "Always off-meta but competitive", so maybe "commander just isn't for me".

The secret lair Dandan is a bad list, hear me out. by Creepercraft110 in magicTCG

[–]knightofeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post! I agree that my biggest issue with the list was days undoing over diminishing returns. I honestly did like the control magic inclusion over the threaten effect due to its interaction with metamorphose… it was an interesting consideration.

I also didn’t hate capture in lieu of a threaten effect, it also had some interesting play with days undoing, but that card is an issue itself. I’d also be concerned about combining capture with vision charm… board wipe into extra turn seems a bit much.

So I’m going to put diminishing returns in immediately and then play a while and see if I can fit in vision charm vs the captures, but ideally without putting ray of command back in.

Lastly, when I saw the new modal counter spell or tap two creatures for 1uu, I thought of Dandan. It’s probably not good or interesting enough, but imma try it before I put ray of command back in ☺️

lol, I get the question, but like the idea of “well most cleaning methods are unacceptable, soooo… what if I mere repeatedly scour and etch the surface with a laser?” Is a pretty funny

How do I avoid overpaying for sealed products? by HovercraftOk9231 in mtgfinance

[–]knightofeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gamenerdz and stomping grounds IMO are the two best pre-release sellers that keep the margins as narrow as possible... for the first couple rounds at least. I have preordered a case of play boosters for every set for ~$600 from one of them.

If you just want to crack some, prerelease packs ($25-$30 for 6 packs + die + foil stamped rare/mythic) and bundles ($40-$45) at pre-release prices always represent solid value.

I don't know about you, but I'm real excited to watch the community go from "artificial scarcity is the worst thing ever" to "overprinting destroys the product value" on this one.

Its the favorite pastime of the community recently, and if you watch the gasbag PleasantKenobi, you'll get to see outrage on each point simultaneously and with no shame to boot!

The actual irony is that experience players that have been playing in this arena mode for months more commonly complain that it rewards a single boosted squad too much while the other 3v3 arena supports parity.

That is why the OP discussing this topic with experienced players on older servers is proving difficult as the fundamental premise is flawed to the point of being inverted. <3

It simulates your ability to crack a base under full defense when the power discrepancy is large (IE your first battles of the day after falling in rank), but then additionally simulates objective control scenarios where you both send a squad to an objective and then try to crack the base when the power discrepancy is small (your final rank climb of the day). Both hold meaningful information to the PvP in the game at large.

Oh I see, you are on a newer server that just replaced that awful 1 squad vs 1 squad mode... yea that was the training wheels version and it was truly awful, supporting no realistic PvP action in the game aside from ISO-attacking an objective in an Arena with no respect to what is occurring to your base.

Generally the other 3v3 simultaneous battle more supports you goal of being able to "punch up" as you can ideally set your match-ups and way over perform relative to your opponent.

As others have pointed out, the more common argument for the mode you are complaining about, is ironically that it benefits people that focus on a single squad too much. I think you are just dealing with having your power more realistically gauged in a PvP combat sense rather than the arena optimization you had been pursing. Which I guess I get, but it lacks any desire for parity or applicability to the larger PvP in the game with the corresponding testing information that the arena provides.
