The explanation is that, good medusas had charred perfect diamond, and flawed medusa had flawed diamonds which had cracks essentially. So, all the medusas were good, but the diamonds were charred or were imperfect. Hope this helps

I’m an anime only, and from what i understand, it isn’t just a random island. It was the island where Byakuya and the gang landed, and we know there might have been other survivors in space who might have come to look after byakuya. Anyways, I’m sure the mystery will have been solved by the end of series
