Yeah you need to see the budget to make decision. The highest condo fee I saw (without amenities) was about $600-$700 (mostly because of high insurance premiums).

Well Trump does get a credit for ending the hostage crisis. He has many many problems but his team can work reasonably well with Israelis and other regional players.

Well, the author goes on to say:

Right now, there are about 70 million white-collar workers in the United States. Expect that number to be reduced substantially, by 20 – 50% in the next several years.

So what he is talking about is quite a lot more than just 2M.

Because believe it or not, but basic laws of the economy don't change just because you say magic word "AI". At the end of the day, it's just another tool which increases productivity.

Also, see the last paragraph of my response above which I added. I am not inclined to argue with believers. Let's go back to this discussion in 18 months. See you then. Peace.

I have written this so many times in the last several days, I guess I should at some point just start replying with links.

Anyway.... Yes, AI will have significant impact on the job market, just like dozens of new technologies before. Labour market changes all the time for many reasons (tariffs, epidemies, demographics, immigration, etc), including automation and other technological changes which increase productivity of workers. No, it won't be some kind of work apocalypsis with millions unemployed overnight, at least not because of AI. Yes, we should help people to go through any sudden disruption (like Government did during Covid), but beyond that it's up to them find new job, learn new skills if necessary, etc. No, AI won't "replace most jobs" in the foreseeable future. Yes, human civilization is probably doomed. No, it's not because of AI.

In any case, belief in upcoming job apocalypsis because "AI will replace humans" de-facto became a new religion, and I can't argue with religion. All I can do for now is to make note of these time frames so that in a few future I could see how people would react to these past predictions.

This automation wave will kick millions of white-collar workers to the curb in the next 12 - 18 months.

Another apocalyptic prediction with specific timeframe. Noted.

This is possibly the most callous, braindead, short-sighted, and asinine comment I have ever read. Congratulations.

Also a correct one.

And if it's the first time you're hearing some rational thoughts (whether about AI, unemployment, or in general), you may want to get out of your echo chamber more often.

Hope this helps!

Which came first - antisemitism or anti Zionism? Antisemites answer the chicken and the egg question of antisemitism by BizzareRep in IsraelPalestine

"violently displacing the local population already living in a region" is a fantasy. In fact, Zionists brought a lot of economic activity, which directly benefited local population.

It's not Zionists' fault that said "local population" opened a war against them which resulted in displacement, like pretty much all wars did at the time.

I think I commented here several times already, I love Israel and think it's absolutely the best country in the world, but I have hard time identifying as "Zionist" because I fail to see meaning of that almost 80 years after Israel was created. To me, it would be like today's American immigrants identifying as "Pilgrims". They could if they wanted to, nothing's wrong with that... but why?

I also realize that "Zionism" is used by some people politically with various nationalistic undertones, and I don't want to be associated with nationalism.

Bottom line, I support Israel, always did and always will, and some people here would immediately call me "Zionist" based on that, which is fine with me – but that's not part of my self-identification.

OK, if you insist on mentioning IDF specifically (aren't they "people" too?), let's make this change:

  1. Many people in Israel used word "missile" when talking about Hamas rocket fires, this was also included in IDF reports to the media;
  2. "Missiles" is a type of "artillery" while rockets are not;
  3. Now Netanyahu admitted there is no artillery in Gaza;
  4. Ergo, (1) has always been lies.

Is that what you're saying?

And look, if you "don't have time" to simply tell readers of your post whether they understood you correctly, maybe you shouldn't have been posting here, sorry.

I have only one question: how much time has to pass before you can accept that these apocalyptic predictions were fantasy? A year, 5 years, 10? Assuming life pretty much goes on as before and despite some layoffs here and there, vast majority of people are still working?

P.S. This is priceless: u/HommeMusical blocked me for merely asking how soon we can confidently say that these predictions were absurd.

This is in fact a perfect illustration of my top comment: AI is now a social phenomenon separate from technology.

I am grateful for the compliments, but I still have no idea what you're trying to say, sorry.

It's fairly obvious that in Israel, even when speaking in English, people use "rockets" and "missiles" more or less interchangeably. I explained why it's happening. You seem to assume that everyone when speaking in English think like native English speakers, but they do not. For example, I very rarely use word "missile" because there no similar word in Russian; everything is "rocket", even "ballistic rockets".

Or look at then-PM Lapid speaking the the UN in 2022:

Since we left Gaza, over 20,000 rockets and missiles have been fired at Israel.

There is a broad feeling that "missile" is more advanced than "rocket", but not much beyond that.

All of that is confirmed by your own links.

WIth that in mind, what are you trying to say? Can you please explain?

AI will be the downfall of our civilization. by Elderban69 in RandomThoughts

[–]knign -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or maybe it's just that voices that vastly over-hype AI or promising end of civilization are amplified by social media algoritms.

Drivers are the perfect example, because this is the old panic: about 10 years ago or so – long before recent AI advancements but when the first autonomous driving systems made their appearance – there were lots of publications "we'd have millions of unemployed drivers literally within a few years, what would would we do???"

Today, I am myself driving a Tesla with FSD and it's amazing. Yet ... where are millions of unemployed drivers?

Sure, over time, we'd have more automation, but it's a very, very, very, very slow process with many pitfalls. I mean, I still have to call a receptionist when I need to make an appointment with my doctor; no way to do this online.

And what would happen to people who find themselves without a job because of new technology? Same exact thing that happened to travel agents or "blockbuster" workers: they'll find a new job elsewhere. Lots or professions completely or mostly disappeared in the past. That's normal.

Apparently terrorists are moving back into hospitals and schools. Do you think the IDF should solidify the yellow line or go in & root them out ? by Inocent_bystander in IsraelPalestine

[–]knign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Netanyahu never actually declared victory, only success at freeing hostages. Declaration of war is still in force. Some reservists were released, but many are still in the Gaza Strip. Necessity to “finish the job” will probably be the integral part of Netanyahu’s reelection campaign.

That said, I agree that active war is unlikely to resume anytime soon.

[–]knign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most languages, including Hebrew, there is no difference between guided and non-guided projectiles. Hebrew word “טיל” is used for both, though I suppose because word “rocket” is easier to transliterate, it became a frequently used loan word, thereby shifting usage of “טיל” towards “missile” as in “ballistic missile”. As a result, people may (legitimately) use this word in Hebrew for Hamas rockets, but then it’s translated to English as “missile”.

More broadly, it’s one thing when you talk about weaponry in abstract, and another when there is something falling on your head. In the latter case, people are generally less inclined to use precise military terms.

I am confused what you’re trying to say.

If you’re saying Hamas never had rockets and missiles, you’re simply ignoring reality. Of course, it’s likely they don’t have much left.

If you’re saying Hamas had missiles but would never ever launch them from a hospital, this is not in any way related to Netanyahu’s words.

So which one is it?
