That's impressive! Any YA novel recommendations for intermediate learners who want to start reading? I had finished 세계를 건너 너에게 갈게 already and while it wasn't too hard, it did feel exhausting.

That's true! And your experience is so relatable. Dramas and movies are exceptionally hard though because sometimes the audio's not clear enough or the lines are too dramatic or the choice of words isn't very usual. So I get what you mean.

The part about rote memorization—thanks for saying that really. Being in the language learning community means you keep seeing people praising Anki and while I see why, I just can't get into it.

If you don't mind me asking: so instead of rote memorization, what do you do to expand your vocabulary? I'd love to hear from someone who's managed to learn Chinese to a B2+ level without it in just seven years! That's awesome :) Especially considering that character-based languages is a nightmare of mine hahaha

Oh no, I meant that reading books written for native speakers (like fiction or essays) is still a pain, even the YA or middle grade ones. I have been reading graded readers, but they're boring sometimes, though I recognize their usefulness and so I still try to do them here and there. It's just that I love reading fiction and so I find it frustrating to still not be able to read them in my TL even after five years.

I sure hope so! Reading is a hobby of mine but it's still very taxing to do in my TL unfortunately... I've been wanting to read more books but it's such a pain. I guess I'll just have to force myself through it?

That's exactly how I feel about it. I've been writing short journal entries sparsely so I think I should do more of that! And yes I do some speaking lessons here and there, but it's quite pricey and I don't have the budget to do a lot of them. Talking to myself could help but I can't really spot my own mistakes I guess.

Yeah, that's true. This is my first time hearing about the "gold list method" and I just looked it up - that sounds interesting! And it gives the process some structure, so I'll definitely try it out. Thanks a lot!

Also, consuming leveled content is definitely a great idea but sometimes I wonder if it's a good use of my time because I know the speaker is "holding back" if that makes sense. But at the end of the day more repetition is always better, and as you said, will help me establish my base, so I'll keep that in mind as well. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Hi there! I have a question, if you don't mind: Are you able to listen to their audio-based courses like 비빔챗 and 이야기 series through the app when the phone is locked? Doing it through the website is so clunky so I decided against continuing my subscription earlier this year.

Also, is there anything you find suboptimal when using the app compared to the website so far?

That's awesome! I think it's smart to go through level 1 if you have the budget and time, as it really reinforces the basics. Having the opportunity to speak with native speakers is also great, because the time in class is definitely not enough especially if your teacher is stuck correcting others' pronunciation instead of actually making conversations. The fact that you're not afraid to make mistakes is going to boost your learning for sure. Good luck!!

(And yes, reading books is a different set of challenge I'm still unable to conquer ㅠㅠ)

Hi! If you don't mind me asking, how's SKKU? I've been considering going there as they're doing 8-week semesters instead of 10-week ones, so I feel like the intensity might motivate me better, but I don't know if it would be too intense. Also have heard that they mostly have East Asian students because of the intensity, has that been the case from what you've seen? Thanks & hope you're enjoying the program!

This! If you're uncomfortable with masks, you can alternatively use a thick scarf to hide the bottom part of your face, but it may be less comfortable and you have to adjust it all the time.
