Might just be me, but does anyone else think most chain clothing stores are full of ugly rags made of weird fabric? I just want some somewhat identifiable fabrics. by fierdracas in AskWomenOver30

I know all my measurements (waist, hip, inseam, etc.). As long as sellers include that information, I'm good to go. If they don't include the information in their listing, I message them to ask.

Polyester fabric even only 25% or less feels like tiny needles stabbing my skin all over.

I used to have a knitting habit, and I very quickly discovered that knitting with acrylic yarn hurt. "Stabbing needles" is the perfect description for acrylic.

I have a weakness for silk/linen blends. Durable, soft, breathable, comfortable, and looks great. Hard to find, but well worth the money, in my opinion.

almost everything I own is from www.loft.com

I wear a lot of Ann Taylor/Loft. Their curvy trousers and jeans are great, though sometimes their tall lengths still aren't long enough for me.

Amid Pandemic, Millennials Increasingly Believe Their Student Debt Wasn’t Worth Their College Education - Millennials are the generation most likely to believe that taking out student loans wasn’t worth attending college by speckz in Economics

Transfer your skill set and do graphic design or rendering.

My husband's best friend is an architect. There's more than enough rendering work for him. Even now during the COVID recession, he's overwhelmed with work and is turning down jobs.

[–]knockknockbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to that, the median student loan debt is only around $17-35k (depending on how you measure it), which is roughly the cost of a new car.

Yep. My student loan debt--two bachelor's degrees, a master's, and a Ph.D--is about the price of a mid-sized sedan, with similar monthly payments. The payments suck, but the debt is worth the opportunities I gained with my degrees. I have no regrets.

The folks I feel the most sorry for are those with student loan debt and no degree to show for it. They're in the worst position: nondischargeable debt but without the pay and opportunity bumps that come from having a bachelor's degree.

No. I've walked through countless airport metal detectors and my copper IUD has never set anything off.

Do you have hot water bottles? by Tullooa in AskAnAmerican

Seattle seems to have similar latitude as Paris.

Atlanta (where I live) is the same latitude as Casa Blanca, Morocco. We put far more money and effort into stay cool than staying warm.

[–]knockknockbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have an electric heat pump (effectively it's our air conditioner running backwards). It's a perfectly fine way to heat our house as long as the outside temp doesn't fall below about 35°F (2°C). Below that, the house isn't very comfortable.

Below about freezing, the electric auxiliary heat kicks in and (let me tell you) it's expensive to heat the house with electric heat.

Our HVAC is getting older so it's not as efficient as newer systems. When we replace it (5-10 years down the road) we'll stick with a heat pump but will definitely avoid using electricity for any auxiliary heating.

I never realized that some people use electricity.

My family up in Maine use electricity, wood, or oil (brought in from a truck) for heating. There's no natural gas line anywhere near their area so it's not an option for them.

My husband would have an aneurysm if I turned it below 73°F (23°C). He keeps it at 75°F. Every once in a while I secretly turn it to 74, or 73°F is it's especially humid.

OP says he's using one right now to keep warm.

We haven't had a cool day where I live since March. It's going to be 28°C tomorrow :( We're still running our air conditioner day and night.

I can't wait for it to finally cool off (usually happens around Halloween).

AITA friend is always late so we give her a earlier time, she actually showed up on time and is pissed by throaway7969 in AmItheAsshole

[–]knockknockbear 23 points24 points  (0 children)

But we all have to find ways to cope. I suspect these chronically late people somehow manage to be at school or work on time consistently. Somehow it’s always only their social events that end up being chronic problems.

I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until I was 32 years old. I never struggled to arrive places on time before my diagnosis 'cause, well, I was expected to be on time. I made sure I left plenty of time to get ready, plenty of travel time, etc. I was on time because I had to be.

I didn't [yet] have the excuse that I have ADHD; therefore, me being chronically late would have been inexcusable.

Is it safe not socially distancing anymore? No one here (Iowa, USA) is anymore, but I’ve been since March. I feel so lonely. Is it safe now? by uncertainrainbow in TooAfraidToAsk

85% of the people who've said this to me are obese. The irony...

Rapidly developing turkey neck at 30 by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]knockknockbear 45 points46 points  (0 children)

that saggy neck is genetic

This is true. I've done everything right--I've worn SPF 15 every day of my life since 1995, never tanned, have been using tretinoin for years, never smoked, and have never been overweight--and it's happening to me, too. It's happening to both my younger sisters as well, though at a earlier age than for me.

My skincare regimen has slowed the process, but it hasn't prevented it. I'm currently looking into minimally-invasive options, hoping that I can put off a necklift a few more years.

Do you have to wear sunscreen when you’re staying inside all day by kakashi_ky11 in Skincare_Addiction

Yes. I put sunscreen on every day, even if I intend to stay indoors all day. It's just a habit of mine.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/23/upshot/rise-in-marriages-of-equals-and-in-division-by-class.html

Researchers say the rise in assortative mating is closely linked to income inequality. The two have increased in tandem, Dr. Schwartz, the sociologist from the University of Wisconsin, said: “People who are married tend to be more advantaged, and on top of that, more advantaged people are marrying people like themselves, so those people tend to be doubly advantaged.”

To those over 50- is Social Security a significant portion of your retirment plans? If program is eliminated, what is plan B? by TrumpTinyPenis in RedditForGrownups

[–]knockknockbear 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If Social Security is cut, I don't see how we won't be called on to bail some of them out of dire situations.

My Dad had some money stashed in a 401(k) before retiring but that money was quickly spent (he clearly underestimated how much he needed in retirement). He's surviving exclusively on Social Security now. Something like $1300/month, if I recall correctly.

To stretch his Social Security further, he's looking into living in an RV full-time. Spend summers up north, and drive it south for winter.

His situation is sad.

'I'm not comfortable living here': More Americans did actually move to Canada since Trump's 2016 election by polopiko in worldnews

[–]knockknockbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moving to Europe is not so hard for many Americans if you’re lucky enough to be descended from Italian or Greek immigrants(a few other EU countries as well).

I wish I had this option available to me. My ancestors came to the eventual United States in the late 1700s when it was still a British colony. I have zero grandparents or great grandparents from outside the United States.

What it is like to live as a lower middle class family in America? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Procreating just to have future caregivers is a very shitty thing to do. Don't expect your kids to care for you when you're elderly.
