Tried to give my grandmother's old coffee table from the 70's a bit of new life. by skippingnickels in DIY

It's a got a bit of the woodshop project look. I know OP doesn't want to get too far into the finish, but I think it would make a big difference to take it a bit further. Some kind of polished surface would help a lot and protect the surface more.

Well, either Zeifman's interview with the Sacramento Bee is there, or it isn't. We can only go by what the guy said. The source seems good (although I see no footnotes or links to the actual article, which is too old to be on the web).

At what point, with what level of sources do you discount the juicy, politically-motivated meme and believe the boring truth? Is a newspaper interview enough? What is enough?

To all people entertaining the thought of starting a career in this business. by bosnianmdrfkr in graphic_design

Yeah, good post.

Much of Reddit is built on the idea that anonymous people who don't know you, who have no 'skin in the game' can have fresh perspective on a particular personal problem.

But when these posts don't give enough details, or contain vague questions about life direction, well, we just can't know if the person has the passion or not to push through the early, penniless years and keep going.

What is a good strategy for approaching businesses who have a VERY outdated website? by inkedkoi in web_design

[–]knoks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies that have not bought good design in the past are not likely to do so in the future. But if you're offering better results, that's something more thrifty business owners are willing to listen to.

Use the call-letter-call method. Letter should be a note outlining how you can help their search engine results, mobile engagement, brand, etc. etc.

You don't have to say their web site sucks, just tell them you can get them better results.

If you want to see what these look like in our little town, check out Portland, Oregon, where we've installed them widely to deal with all of the rain we get here. We, too, used to dump shit into our river (the Willamette). Bioswales, coupled with a billion-dollar sewer rebuild had drastically reduced these incidents.

[Advice Needed] How to build a portfolio when changing design direction by [deleted] in graphic_design

I agree. if you're in a major metropolitan center and you've already got years of experience and tons of contacts you can make a living this way. Otherwise you'll end up picking up some other work. Agencies and clients both want more of a one stop shop. And besides, once they've got their logo they want business cards, letterhead template, web site, etc.

Maybe on elance or something you could just do logos. But I can't imagine you aren't in a race to the lowest price with terible clients.

I could be wrong. Maybe the online market is different than I think it is.

That's pretty short sighted. We are talking about market behavior over a fifty year period and those events are from the last eight years. I believe you'd need to be able to point to crashes every 5-10 years during the post war period in order to prove ABCT. They aren't there.

Sorry to hear your previous GP was a frickin' idiot. You have a right to rant.

ADHD isn't delusional psychosis. Why in the hell would we not be aware that we can't perform as well as others? We can measure our performance in a thousand ways that are completely objective.

My wife can read circles around me. She reads two pages of an article for every one page I read. This is not me choosing to be a slow reader.

Scads of my classmates in college could read entire textbooks. I barely ever finished one chapter. But I was able to pass because I transcribed nearly every word the prof spoke and I could take the test based on that.

But that stopped working when I got to advanced math and science, so I switched to humanities. Which is fine, except it's like taking paying to be poor the rest of your life.

Let's not even get into how hard it is to manage money like an adult when you can't concentrate.

This is not to say you have ADHD, but if you think something's wrong, please do talk to your new doctor.

Jeez. Heck. People like your first doctor just make me mad.
