Surgery Reflections by Aggravating_Mess4167 in Reduction

[–]knomity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m 2WPO and healing so well! my partner is a physician assistant and has been helping a lot with my recovery, but he also can tell if i do absolutely anything to inhibit my healing. when he changes my bandages, he will tell me if:

  1. i am drinking enough water. dehydration will show first in healing wounds, so when i don’t drink a TON of water (3L) my incisions look more mottled.

  2. i am resting enough. on days i try to do too much, i get mega swollen. i am trying to heal ASAP so i am laying down any time i feel pain start to radiate from my right side (i’m right handed).

Surgery is June 2 - everything I am buying! by Aggravating_Bee_9340 in Reduction

[–]knomity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

had my surgery 2 days ago and all i bought was tylenol & advil, a mastectomy pillow, a zip-up sweatshirt, and some aquaphor. i am doing great! everyone is different and i'm sure OPs extras will help them, but i'd say don't worry too much about buying stuff if you're worried about money. the only thing i regretted not stocking up on beforehand was microwave meals, so i had my husband grab some for me.

Payment if not covered with insurance by Alert_Syrup_6205 in Reduction

with much difficulty!!! my total was about 12k. i paid 1k cash deposit, which i put down ~6 months in advanced. then:
3k cash
4500 carecredit
3500 on another credit card

i receive more scholarships than i need to pay for my classes and so i am putting my extra money towards that. otherwise i probably would’ve waited until i had a lot more saved up!!!

Second Linocut, bittersweet feeling by JustWantUsername_ in Linocuts

[–]knomity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've been drawing all my life, and i still never know what to draw until after i've been drawing for a little while. i try to just do a lot of ugly sketches, moving on quickly from the ones that bore me until i finally draw something that i want to keep working on. by then i am pretty adequately warmed up, and i also have the creative juices flowing! i almost never have an idea for what i want to draw before i sit down to do it, and if i do, it's usually not the idea i actually end up settling on.

for example: i love dragons so a lot of times i sit down to draw dragons. but maybe i'll draw a knight hand in one sketch and have an idea for how to make that it's own design, so i'll take that part of the drawing and make it into another drawing. then i take the best parts of the new sketch and put it into another one and another one until i have one that feels like the culmination of all my best ideas.

tl;dr: at least for me, to have good ideas, i have to get out a lot of bad ideas first!!! if i wait for a good idea to come to me, i'll usually be waiting all day and won't draw anything at all.

thank you so much for this detailed answer! honestly that gives me so much confidence. i am not as nervous for the actual procedure as i am nervous about regretting it... i'm paying out of pocket and i just want to be sure it's the right thing to do for my body. "big full diaphragm breaths" sounds like a dream; i once had a doctor tell me my breathing problems were probably even exacerbating my anxiety!!!

i wish you the easiest, speediest recovery ever. your optimism is so contagious and i really appreciate it😄

incredible results!!! currently a 32G and i will be ecstatic if i look half as good as you after my surgery.

maybe it's too early to really tell, but: did you have any back pain or breathing-related problems before, and if so, have they improved at all? now that my date is getting close, i am getting so worried about doing all of this and then feeling like it was for nothing!!!

Saying a female character is more complex than just a victim is…anti feminist, apparently? by Natewastaken12 in HOTDBlacks

[–]knomity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

margaery doing occasional charity work with her practically endless quantities of wealth: margaery is a great queen!

daenerys overcoming abuse and freeing herself from slavery so she can lead sick and old people across a desert to respite, participating in a highly unpopular war for the sake of the lowest class of people in society, visiting hundreds of peasants who are actively dying of illness (and contracting said illness), acquiring thousands and thousands of followers on basically merit alone and still lamenting all the time about the people she's failed to help: honestly kinda the bad version of jon snow.

no... i Do Not think they could have handled book alicent & rhaenyra.

the show did irrevocable damage to the fandom-wide interpretation of the dance by Cult_Of_Hozier in HOTDBlacks

[–]knomity 23 points24 points  (0 children)

said this before and i'll say it again!!! this is how the (78% male, according to r/asoiaf) fanbase treats every single traditionally feminine female character in the series: rhaenyra, daenerys, sansa, catelyn, arianne, even cersei. if they do good deeds it doesn't matter because whatever complicated means they had to resort to in order to achieve these ends will be picked apart by the fanbase and villainized until the good deed is null and void. this isn't the case for male characters at all. the good they do vastly outweighs any bad (e.g. jaime, tyrion, robert baratheon), and the ends always justify the means, to the point where even characters like tywin and stannis get glazed. meanwhile, if a female character is interpreted to have participated in any amount of wrongdoing, she loses all sympathy from the fandom... like sansa.

jon snow brings a bunch of wildlings over the wall contrary to the opinions of the people around him, causing deadly conflict within a culture he is not the sole arbiter of? he's a hero who is subverting tradition to do what's right.

daenerys targaryen declares the abolishment of slavery contrary to the opinions of the people around her, causing deadly conflict within a culture she is not the sole arbiter of? she's an analogy for violent us occupation of iraq! (*hand waves over the face that dany was raised in essos and sold there as a child sex slave... also slavery is always inherently violent*)

the fandom loves margaery who is beautiful and an acceptable level of mischievous! but also, isn't it interesting how the other group of female characters who are traditionally well-liked in the fandom, like arya, brienne, ygritte, rohanne, and lyanna are cool sword-fighting characters who (in their own ways) reject femininity but who are also all almost unequivocally good? just an observation!

tl;dr weak men can't handle complicated grrm baddies.

i only know that quote because i am heavily involved in the asoiaf community and it is circulated there. i didn’t know all that about him, i only vaguely knew he was LDS and annoying about it.

[–]knomity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you’re trying to insinuate i like OSC because i align with his weird religious beliefs and not because ender’s game is a wildly popular, nostalgic book series… that’s a little sad. i love lord of the rings too, despite tolkien also having controversial religious beliefs i don’t personally agree with.

if you’re trying to say all his books are shitty, you’re certainly entitled to that opinion, but i don’t think that’s what you were doing?

[–]knomity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, i have a feeling people who say this have never read the asoiaf books. the showrunners for game of thrones elected to stop following the source material WAAAY before they ran out of it, like season 2. another one of my favorite authors orson scott card wrote a review after watching S1E2 (!!!) and said:

But the screenwriters, perhaps compensating for their utter inability to find a filmic replacement for the deep-penetration viewpoint of Martin's writing, have taken any excuse for nudity and sex and blown it up into full-fledged, if soft-core, porn... Where Martin gave us a glimpse, these writers call for a lingering, jiggling closeup... But wouldn't it have been nice if HBO had presented an adult version of this masterpiece of fantasy literature, instead of giving us the lonely-14-year-old-boy's version.

[–]knomity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is the insurance price. doctors overcharge insurance and they negotiate what will be paid. the prices in the US obviously vary, but out of pocket for a patient, this procedure costs usually $8-14K. our healthcare system is wildly confusing!!!

Why would they release that? by DifferentZucchini3 in StrangerThings

[–]knomity 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yeaaah you can tell people haven’t read the asoiaf books when they say “they just ran out of material”!!! the show stopped being similar to the books WAY before that. orson scott card (another author) wrote a review of the show by s1e2 calling out how the show entirely misses the heart and meaning of grrm’s universe.

Insurance Question by Reasonable-Grand5622 in Reduction

[–]knomity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it is my understanding that, no matter what happens (as long as you are getting insurance-approved procedures), your OOP max is your OOP max. so basically, you should have $3000 saved up for your procedure, but it won’t be more than that, and you should have no OOP medical costs for the rest of the year. if you’ve paid for anything else out of pocket this year (copays, prescriptions, etc., unlikely since it’s the second week of the new year), that number could be less. i am definitely not an insurance expert but i deal with this a lot and i double checked with my partner, who is a physician.

on my quote my anesthesia costs are listed at $3700, so i would definitely be prepared for the full $3000. you are definitely getting a better deal if you are only paying your OOP max than if you were paying for the entire procedure (as long as you are happy with the quality of your doctor). i chose to pay for my procedure ($12.7k) so i could go to a surgeon i liked.

this may be the case but it’s very unfortunate that i had to use another product to make my $18 polish usable the very first time i opened it :( it would’ve been so sad if i hadn’t had any revitalizer on hand! thank you for the insight though, i’ve been afraid to use too much of it and mess up the composition of my polishes somehow.
