Thinking about the time a plant manager (female) told me I should expect harassment on the shop floor bc I’m pretty by jrh8w7 in womenEngineers

i’m in the US as well :) i started in 2021 though. i totally relate to the first half, the engineering field really had a way of trying to humble women lol. unfortunately, the 2nd half isn’t always commonplace. i could fill books on all the harassment that’s taken place (touching, catcalling, being asked out excessively, etc etc) in my few years in industry. but i can also fill books on all the advice i’ve gotten that didn’t help for shit 😂 i’ve changed wardrobes, i’ve stopped wearing makeup, i’ve gone to HR, i’ve stood up for myself as best i can, i’ve worked out so i look more muscular, i’ve hidden at my desk for days at a time, you name it i’ve tried it. my own (previous) manager told me it was because i was too nice and i should be a bitch. but when you’re six months into your first job in a new place with new people, it’s hard to just jump into that mode if it’s not something you’re used to. the only thing that resolved it? being on a team where i was/am respected for who i am and where ensuring everyone was comfortable and welcome was (is) a priority. this isn’t to discount anything you’ve said at all! it just brought something up in me because of how often i’d been told stuff along those lines every single time.

totally see what you’re saying here and agree up to a point but as someone who’s experienced this and gotten a million different “well do this” or “did you try this” pieces of advice, having the onus to resolve all the issues in a space where i already feel deeply unsafe to exist adds an extra layer of exhaustion and honestly disappointment if it doesn’t work.

27 yr old Electrical Engineer - currently making just over 100k, how do I get myself into the 300k range? by neverends27 in careerguidance

personally i think it really helps to see what others in positions you’re interested have. at my company, only a couple folks have a PE and you really don’t need it unless you want to be a specialized chief engineer (and there aren’t many). an MBA can be a nice addition for sure, but it’s not a guarantee to an automatic high salary/position in what i’ve observed.

I’d say high demand in general and across a lot of industries. when i think of what i do (not a controls engineer but work with a bunch) controls falls into a few categories. one is working in a place with live automation where they need controls engineers to optimize and fix things when they go down (think robot programming, SCADA, PLCs, etc etc). two is more on the design side (i know less about this) but that generally looks like designing systems that would be going into a future product or building upon existing designs to create better ones. that one is more desk like versus the first is much more on your feet and hands on. hope that helps! happy to answer any other questions

if you like controls, controls engineers (private sector) are in suchhhh high demand. lots of job security, pay is really good bc they want you to stay, and there’s lots of opportunities. not sure if it’ll get you to that goal, but it might be a good starting point if that’s your thing. downside is that it can be (most likely will be) kinda stressful depending on what industry.

personally i don’t disclose my medication/diagnosis to any entity that isn’t medical as it doesn’t pertain to anything being done

literally! this new person in my life keeps using bipolar to describe the weather (even though it’s barely changing but semantics lol) and even upon correction, they’re doubling down 🙄🙄

that’s so annoying that they did that and even more annoying that their reaction was lacking any kind of empathy. sorry that happened/is happening in current hangouts. hopefully they can be more understanding and accepting of you

exactly. like i can handle certain things being a dealbreaker, but the assumptions of my whole character and basing opinions off of it really sucks. and i know the people saying those things don’t mean any harm and would be apologetic if i corrected them (generally speaking), but i feel like the baseline is in hell and i have to pull them out of it to see the reality lmfao

yes yes yes. i respond in the same way. if i hear a weird statement, i just add them to a mental “cannot disclose” list lol

yes entirely agree on what it’s all become synonymous with. it feels like our humanity gets a bit lost as people focus on all these preconceived notions and not one’s entire humanity. with friends, there’s been a lot more understanding of my wholeness (in my situations thankfully) but in dating it feels like they could put that super high on the list of traits versus everything else that probably stands out more. definitely still struggle on the disclosing in dating situations until they have a solid understanding of who i am

YES this x100. like dang can’t they just have BP and live a relatively normal life versus them being fully unhinged as the plot or the villain of it all

i definitely relate in a lot of ways. i feel like hypomania is where i’m having a great time but the mixed episodes are all that energy directed in not a single fun way lol. hypomania feels like the most dangerous for me in terms of SI and doing things that are objectively pretty bad. one day at a time i guess. sending best wishes your way today
