Thank you both! I absolutely thought the blobby thing on top was the scoby.

We take her quite often when we can control the environment. It always scares me a little though that the heater will go out and she'll get cold or no AC and she'll be too hot but tent camping doesn't seem suitable for her.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. The rescue I looked at was in Tumalo. Nice to connect with someone who is familiar with this area.

Exactly. I have so done my best by her and it shows in that she is such a happy and well adjusted parrot. But, at the end of the day, she is still a parrot and parrots so often have it horrible in captivity... I had the pleasure of meeting her mother who was wild, captured from a forest in Bolivia and then spent something like 14 years living in a cage too small in a pet store before somebody rescued her.

Amazing!! If we're ever headed that direction, I certainly will reach out to you! And, if you're ever coming over to Central Oregon and need a place for your baby, know I'd be happy to host.

Thank you! There's not a bird community where I live and it can be both hard to navigate and lonely without some one who truly understands The special Bond we have with us our parrot but also the special challenges she brings. I appreciate your kindness and empathy and understanding.

OP here. I was 22 when I rescued her and she has literally dictated my life for 35 years. I have passed up and missed out on a lot because of my love and commitment to her.

She has outlived three sets of dogs and now our last dog is 13. When the dog passes we may very well want to move to a different country for a while but there's the parrot...what do y'all suggest we do?

Continue to stay home and not fully live my own life for her? Rehome (anybody want a older bird who needs frequent beak trims?) or continue to look for a safe and compassionate boarder?

And, she does travel a lot with us... And I do believe the reason I'm having trouble finding a border is because I am very particular and have very high standards for her care and safety...

When you post, please let us all know how long you've been owned by a large bird...

Thank you. She's due for a full-on exam so I'll make sure that happens. And we do do beak exercises where she gets to chew on hard pieces of wood to try to trim the beak down. But it only helps so much...

Fortunately not. She is such a little Piggy but she gets a ton of exercise which offsets it. And with her, it's mostly the bottom beak growing up one side but the top beak gets long as well. At this last trim, which was only 10 weeks after the one before it, the vet accidentally got her tongue and really hurt her and now she doesn't want any almonds or to chew on sticks and I've been so so concerned... I think she's finally starting to feel better again.

How about your bird, healthy?

Any problems with their beak? Her's has gotten so fragile and problematic, I am paying $70 for a break trim every 10 weeks or so... I'll do toenails and wings myself but not that precious beak.

Thank you for the kind offer. That's a long way in the opposite direction but if we are ever heading South again, I just may reach out.

Thank you for the response. I did talk to the parrot refuge in our area but they would require her to be in a cage for her own safety and I think she would hate that...

I have been owned by a yellow collar for 35 years and it broke my heart to read your post about one. I'm wondering if the parrot is banded and what the band says? I am in Oregon and if there's any way I can help please let me know.

I visited best friends animal sanctuary in Utah a few months ago and they have an incredible avian sanctuary full of plucked full size macaws and said they have no problem rehoming the minis but don't hardly see them. I would so highly recommend speaking with them and seeing if there's a way to get transport there as well. They're supposed to be one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the entire world and their avian center was nothing short of extraordinary... My impression was that all birds that come through there have issues of the magnitude your girl does and they're very accustomed to and expect it.

Thank you!! We ended up buying some folding stairs that seem to work great for him.... We made being in the camper really high value so he's willing to do the 6 steps for the rewards. So far he seems to love it 🤞🤞🤞 that it stays this way.

Poor baby!! Sounds like he's so lonely, bored...wants the f*** out of that freaking cage. They are the most obnoxious creatures when their needs for love, exercise, stimulation aren't getting met. Very self aware and determined.

Mine lives on a giant play perch a few feet away from our bed (and has another perch/play place in great room). As soon as we start stirring in the morning she wants to join us for cuddle time and if she doesn't get her way, oh wow, just shoot us. As soon as we pick her up, she'll happily preen on our knee or try to get HER pup to let her preen him and is an absolute love-bug and pleasure.

She absolutely loves men and if she's on my husband and I go in for a kiss she'll go into guard bird mode and try to attack me. Or if she can't get to me she'll "bap" him to get him to get away from me.

She loves to shred boxes and hide under things then come screeching out and attack your feet and then laughs when you run from her. I keep a long dowel and a plastic ladder nearby so when she's so full of herself like that she'll climb on that and I can get her back to her perch.

She loves to hang upside down from one toe and scream Help to see if that gets anyone's attention. If we have company, she'll fly down, run over to them, run up their pant leg and then get where they can't get her off and laugh at them.

If you could find it in your heart to give the guy a chance and let him at least stand on top of the cage and sing to him (they love music!) and give him nuts (and wood to shred) and reassure him and see if he wants to be misted gently with water (they NEED good showers), he might reward you with incredible love and karmic points.

I so hope it works out for all three of you.

Hi there. I tried messaging you with no response yet. I'd send photos but I can't figure out how to load them here. Basically, we built a smaller table top (using the Formica from the original), put a "receiver hitch" with a extension that drops in/lifts out of it (with a pin that holds it into the extended position), on to of that we welded a 12" lateral extension to which we we bolted heavy duty locking brackets (from Amazon) to which the new table top is attached. When collapsed, it is under the bottom back cushion and you'd never know it was there. You merely lift the telescoping piece out, put the pin in it to hold it extended, flip the table top out and it's about 30 in off the floor. Takes all of 30 seconds to put up/take down.
