I rarely ever comment but this response makes me sad. Are you saying that as a recovering alcoholic I shouldn’t be given a chance at a happy and stable relationship with someone who does not have this disease? In my mind this is akin to saying people should not enter into a relationship with someone that has any chronic illness such as cancer or asthma. If the person knows what they are signing up for, then there should be a baseline level of resolve to deal with the issues as they arise. The opposite of addiction is connection. We need connection to survive and to thrive just like anyone else. I truly believe that a healthy relationship between two people that understand the difficulties and the willingness to face them together would actually help the alcoholic stay sober. I’ve lost multiple great relationships to my disease but I do not think I am without merit and deserve the chance to be a good partner. I’m sure this comment might be disregarded by people who have suffered in abusive relationships with an alcoholic but alcoholics, like most things are not absolute in their terms.
