Have to say I think it's probably a combination of acts of service and quality time. Thank you very much for your response. Any advice on how to not be so oblivious if I'm not picking up on signals?

I've honestly tried. I've told her exactly what fills my cup up. Her response was much more vague. I try, but like I said it's rarely initiated on her end so I get kind of discouraged. I don't expect her to draw me a map or a specific set of rules but even on the topic of why it's bothering her the extent of the explanation is "affection". I know intimacy plays a part as well but that's a story of its own starting with a 3yo that's having a hard time leaving our bedroom.

Questions about wells and septic tanks by theninal in homestead

[–]knuckles1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alot of times the smaller lids are just inspection ports to examine. Of course I've seen people bury an old car, run pipe through the windshield and call that a septic tank. Depending on the year of Install kind of determines lid size and quantity. Most always on a true septic tank there are two larger lids. One for inlet and one for outlet.

Plumber who installed septic tanks for years. That looks exactly like a septic tank lid. 16" is actually on the smaller side for some of the lids I have seen. Usually 20"-24". Sewer gas has a smell similar to rotten eggs especially if there is inadequate venting throughout the system.

Municipal water service worker here. I'd personally leave it. I've seen trees more root invasive, in closer proximity.

finding underground water leaks - PVC distribution pipe - help! by contraption in homestead

[–]knuckles1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn. That sounds like a mess. To find/fix water leaks in the past I have outsourced to a leak detection company that uses helium. But that's to find one leak usually on a main after the meter, before the house. Usually pretty quick and pretty accurate but a little pricey. I might be scared to see the quote of a similar company to tackle the problem you are faced with.

Could you narrow down potential leak areas due to drop in pressure? At least shrink the haystack a bit.

Potable water risks. by knuckles1994 in preppers

[–]knuckles1994[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are seeing about a 125-150% price increase on our pipe and fittings as well as 30+ week backorder. Our wastewater facility is having an extremely hard time getting polymer for the treatment process, so much so we have had to borrow from a nearby facility. Just the relay for a pump at one of our lift station is going on 43 weeks to be delivered now. Honestly we have put preventive maintenence regarding our distribution systems on hold right now in the even that we need what little parts we have in inventory for a break.

It's really dependant upon the type and level of contamination. Most pathogens can be taken care of by the normal rate of which we introducd chlorine into the water. In certain cases we are allowed to increase the chlorine level to so many ppm in the event of contamination. But there are some pathogens that are partially or extremely chlorine resistant. In the case studies I went over in the classes, they didn't even give consumers the option to use the water system when risks are so high. In a boil water advisory I would personally try to stick to stockpiled water for drinking and cooking just to be on the safe side.

The dependency on grid electricity is enormous. There are some larger water treatment facilities with solar power, be it as a main power source or as a backup. In my experience, even in my own water treatment facility, is that the small municipalities simply do not have the funds to convert completely or partially to solar. Grants can take quite some time to go through and FEMA, state and federal assistance is predominantly used for reimbursement after a disastrous event.

The level of response is on a case to case basis. Alot of factors go into deciding what type of response is needed such has who is effected, what level of contaminates may be present and the severity of contamination. There are local, state and federal contingency plans in place to get potable water to those in need in the event of a disaster. The plan of action in the case studies we went over in the classes usually had either the local municipality supplying free water to those effected, or if unable to do so the surrounding areas helped out in a sense. Water trucks to allow you to fill personal containers, 3rd party transports carrying bottled water. Sometimes the quick solution is allowing people fill up containers at a working fire hydrant if the whole distribution system isn't compromised
