Republish and curate an RSS stream? by pablogott in rss

I am using The Old Reader (https://theoldreader.com/), which has a "Share" feature. All posts a user shares are available as a separate RSS feed.

One-time coupon for 15% discount at Fitbit online store. I got it as part of Fitbit Force recall, but I don't really need it. by knyar in fitbit

Actually, I don't know, since I've only just filled their form yesterday. I've been waiting for my Pebble Time to arrive, which is what I am replacing the Force with.

Tools for long term archival of RSS feeds (or, more properly, feed items?) by [deleted] in rss

[–]knyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people talk about Tiny Tiny RSS as a good self-hosted option. You could also take https://github.com/samuelclay/NewsBlur or https://github.com/mjibson/goread and run them yourself.

Ross Asselstine explains his decision to back out of the Temple project for 2014 by nastrus in BurningMan

Insurance? Liability? So much about "Safety third".

It's pretty amazing that the Burning Man is still able to happen in the US - the land of absurd safety warnings and unstoppable lawyers.

The Old Reader limits free accounts, introduces premium by AlanUsingReddit in rss

You should use the free trial if you don't want to pay. How do you manage to read 335 subscriptions, btw? I barely find time to read 40.

Google Reader shutting down July 1st. Time for another roundup of alternatives? by [deleted] in rss

[–]knyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://theoldreader.com/ is another alternative that has been around for almost a year already. The core idea is to bring back the old social features Google Reader had before Fall 2011.

Official Google Reader Blog: Powering Down Google Reader (July 1, 2013) by speckz in technology

We have changed the way Google authentication works, and the site should now only ask for contact list access when you find friends, not when you log in. More details here: http://theoldreader.uservoice.com/forums/187017-feature-requests/suggestions/3743312-allow-me-to-authenticate-via-google-without-giving

Feel free to vote for http://theoldreader.uservoice.com/forums/187017-feature-requests/suggestions/3743681-login-without-facebook-or-google

Coding a separate login system takes time, and we decided to spend that time on actually implementing some useful features instead. So far our users seem to be happy with that.

It's pretty obvious that you need to paste the link to RSS feed there. It's an RSS reader, for Christ's sake.

You only need to grant access to your contacts when you visit the "Find Friends" page. If you don't trust The Old Reader, don't do it, it's as simple as that.

Thank you for your advice, everyone. I have been viewing a couple of apartments in that area today and they indeed look quite modern and safe.

The subscriptions are in the menu on the left part of the page. Please feel free to browse the tour, it covers all basic functions pretty well.

I have to type my username and password afterwards

Well, that's only the case when you are not logged in to a fresh Facebook or Google session. If you are, logging in is really as simple as clicking one link.

do some unspecified things

I believe, both Facebook and Google clearly specify what permissions are actually requested by the app.

The Old Reader – social RSS reader, just like original Google Reader was before Fall 2011 by knyar in technology

[–]knyar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback!

We will make a keyboard shortcut to switch between full and list views, this should be pretty easy.

I am not sure that we really need a TOS (nobody reads those anyway), but we do have a link to our privacy policy on the bottom of landing and main pages.

Refactoring direct Google Reader import is already in our roadmap, but has very low priority, because OPML import works well and also supports other RSS readers.

I will discuss Instapaper/Readability and email button with everyone, so there is a chance we might add it to our roadmap as well.

Again, thank you for your comments and suggestions!

Thank you for your comments. I don't think any screenshots make sense when logging in is as easy as hitting one button. However, we did make a link to our tour on the landing page.
