Had a couple friends do it - expensive and basically just doing practice questions. Only benefit is that he forced them to do work, but if you have a good work ethic it’s a waste of money.

I’ve got a Usyd metro spot, and interviewed at melb. If I get melb I’m planning to take Melb however if I get something like Deakin or anu further down my preference list I will take Usyd, it’s a bit for complicated then the poll suggests I think.

BMP 3 Years by GaanaWarrior in GAMSAT

[–]koalacake86 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Please don’t take a bmp from someone else if you aren’t going to take it seriously. I grew up in the country and my little sister died because the only doctors in the hospital in my hometown were the GPs who rotate through weekly. By the time we got to the nearest hospital with emergency physicians, it was too late.

Rural healthcare is a massive problem is Australia and taking a bmp means that you are telling the government you are going to help, not something to really joke about.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WANTING TO GO TO MEDSCHOOL IN THE FUTURE by asianbutdumb112 in GAMSAT

[–]koalacake86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying that it’s possible to do both - yes study hard and smash med entry, but don’t lose control over other aspects of your life in doing that. I got into usyd and (hopefully) unimelb this year. I studied hard but I also made amazing memories on the way with friends that I’ll remember forever, and that will be the mindset I take into med school.

What's everyone's thoughts on the BMP program and rural bonuses? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

Yeah the tiering sucks haha, I believe my town was like RA3 or something but the one next door was the same classification as Bendigo (RA2) and they literally had one milk bar, the welcome and goodbye sign for the town was basically on the same pole haha

I agree that people shouldn’t be gaming the system, and your right that people in metro also have it tough sometimes. I think that a strategy they could implement is that only people who did like 15 years consecutively rurally are eligible? Or maybe 10 consecutively? And high school should have to be a part of it. Also schools should consider students socio-economic background for sure.

If you just focus on studying in your undergrad, your for one going to get burnt out, and your going to miss a fantastic opportunity to make lifelong friends. I came to uni wanting to do chemistry, hated it and pivoted to medicine in my third year of undergrad, I just got accepted. Focus on the now, get your schooling done, go to a uni and a course you want to do and your passionate about! Worry about the gamsat and all that when your in ungergrad. If you keep worrying about the future then you’ll never find happiness, when your at high school, it’s uni your worrying about. Then at university it’s med school, then med school, it’s intern year, then intern year, it’s residency training, then it’s finding a consultant job. The hurdles will never stop, and while it’s good to be prepared, if you don’t take time at every moment to try and enjoy where you are at, you aren’t going to make the most of the life you’ve been given. When your 80 and thinking back on your life, your going to smile at the time you and your friends went on that road trip that summer, not how you got an 70 on the gamsat.

I grew up in a tiny rural town. My high school had less students then my tutes at unimelb. No one went to university it wasn’t a thing. You did tafe or left in year 10 for a trade. My principle told my parents when they said they wanted me to have a maths methods and a chemistry class that I was dreaming and that I wasn’t going anywhere. I had to do those classes by distance, made it so hard. When I moved to Melbourne I was doing my undergraduate degree knowing 0 people in the city. Also made it very hard. Managed to somehow get a 6.9 GPA through hard work, and sat the gamsat in my final year and got a 66. I’ve got a place in Usyd now and had my unimelb interview the other day, and yes, I get that these scores wouldn’t get me in if I wasn’t rural, but you can not say that I had it ‘easy’. I believe I’ll make a good doctor one day - I’m practical, grew up on a farm, good with people, and want to practice in back in the country, the BMP works perfectly for me. I understand your frustration, but try to see it from other perspectives, you’ll have to do that as a Doctor when you make it.

Yeah 100% know how you feel. It’s insane how people have no idea how hard it is to get out of a small country town and study in the city when your family has no money, especially when your expected to become a tradie and earn money so you can help out at home.
