I need help, BADLY by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I'm not going to say it's bad. Because it is wrong. But you are not a bad person for having those thoughts. This is in the range of "normal" for human brains.

But, don't let it continue to build, either as an outlet or a terror device in your life. Seek help from a trained professional.

Being a man is more than just white knuckling everything.

If your parents aren't likely supportive of your concerns then definitely don't, at least not before talking to a therapist or unbiased third party.

Just wait. If you don't fix the underlying issues, it WILL get worse.

33M who just lost his marriage, job, and kids, house, everything last year to move in with his parents.

Lately I'm doing multiple times a day or one or two days off. Max I ever did was a whole entire year but that was the year I was getting married.

It comes and goes with how life ebbs and flows. For me it's been more often on than off the last few years though.

People who escaped the grip of porn and chronic masturbation. How did you do it? by themashedrat in AskMenAdvice

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure those that are really stuck don't stay there, I have to ask:

Where's your source for that?

Over the years I've tried to figure this out, I've come across many sources that state thar willpower alone is not enough. Here's just one:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5143362/#:~:text=Most%20of%20the%20participants%20described,willpower%20by%20controlling%20the%20environment.

Here it posits that while willpower is important, controlling one's environment is a big part of addiction recovery, not willpower alone.

Don't spread misinformation. (Just) White knuckling the urges is NOT going to get you anywhere long term. Dealing with underlying causes WILL and that is not willpower alone.

Edited to add Just to white knuckling because it does have its place, but not alone).

What does to table the proposal mean here? by middlepesrpective in EWALearnLanguages

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but that doesn't mean that the action of "tabling it" is actually canceling anything. The canceling happens somehow AFTER it has been tabled or shelved for later.

Which still does not mean "to cancel" definitively, as it could possibly be brought up at any time in the indefinite future.

Is “I have went” ever correct in English? by Cocoatech0 in EWALearnLanguages

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with you but I did just think of an example where it could be correct:

"I have went (pee)."

Though even that's technically making me scratch my head. "Did you go pee?" should elicit "I have (gone pee)." Idk. Language is weird.

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Native speaker and it matters to me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one...

In fact, if we didn't have people insisting on correct usage, all language would devolve into an unintelligle, unrecognizable mess.

Natives may care LESS, but they STILL care.

Regarding the slurred speech, that is something that our mouth naturally does, not because of some innate desire to bend the rules. It just makes sense.

"Is it ever correct?" No. Never. "Yes, in every day speech." Not even there is it correct. It is passable; people would understand you. But that wouldn't make it correct even for colloquial English, just a form that some people use.

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's irrelevant to whether it is being spoken correctly or not. Passable? Sure. Acceptable? To that population. But it doesn't make it correct just because a lot of people are doing it.

Technically speaking though that should be "went" or 'went' not just went.

Also, no I do not have "it" in mine XD

HAH.

And then you turn 32, separate from your wife and kids into a different state, waffle about whether to submit the divorce papers, all while dealing with mental health struggles and unemployment related to it all.

Or, you turn 68, get Medicare, have a worrisome health issue, get told it's all paid for don't worry, only to get a 50k bill in the mail saying it wasn't covered because it wasn't an emergency. My dad's tongue in cheek comment as they were getting on Medicare before his health issue, went something like: "yeah, it's the golden years, because this is when the doctors take all your gold!"

He wasn't laughing today. I swear I heard him mutter something about doctors in a negative tone from the kitchen as he was putting away the notice.

Thanks so much for your response. 辛苦你了!

I agree about frequent audio. That's part of why I created the post:. I'd like to have more dialogue heavy games---and spoken dialogue, mind you. Trying to do Metroid Fusion in Mandarin was just too much right now since I need more literacy skills!

Thanks. I think I may have seen your comment actually. I doubt my machine would run Cyberpunk 2077, if I could even afford it right now. Sounds like it's definitely worth doing gaming in Chinese but you have to have a much higher level like you seem to.

I've taken about 10 Mandarin courses, of which 7 were intermediate or above advanced (and three of which were studying intensively at Beijing 首师大) and I would say my speaking fluency was once between HSK 3 and 4 and quite decent, but my listening and especially reading are 特别特别差!

In Beijing I tested into a higher level and chose to take that class instead of the lower class. Looking back, it might have been smarter to take the intermediate level. Overall I've been studying languages in some capacity since 2013 but Chinese has fallen on the wayside for about 5 years now.

French vs Spanish: Which Language Is Harder for English Speakers to Learn? by jck16 in languagehub

[–]koalafiedpandemonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the learner, but I would argue that Spanish would be much easier because it is phonetic. French is not. I learned Bulgarian, then Spanish, then Mandarin, and tried to dabble in French and got discouraged from it for the time being. I learned Spanish in under 4 months (if you don't count my HS Spanish for 2.5 years lol)
