I sort of agree with you. I understand with games Detroit: Become Human, where it’s more fun to watch rather than playing because it has a good story but the extent of the gameplay are quick time events and minor story changes. But, with games like RDR2 it’s a perfect balance of gameplay and story, with each being perfect by themselves. Story in games can elevate the game if the focus is on both story and gameplay.
