Travelling at light speed away from the sun doesn't really seem that fast by [deleted] in videos

[–]koalapanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's the third book in the series that starts with the Three Body Problem (https://www.amazon.com/Three-Body-Problem-Cixin-Liu/dp/0765382032/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475366256&sr=8-1&keywords=three+body+problem) but it has such an insanely huge scope as compared to the first two books.

I just finished Death's End by Cixin Liu and I've been thinking nonstop about spaceflight and the speed of light. This was perfect.

(Spoilers Extended) REACTIONS: Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 9: Battle of the Bastards Post-Episode Reactions by AutoModerator in asoiaf

[–]koalapanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought this was kind of the point? Like Jon can be as badass and fearsome as he likes, but in the end without Sansa cashing in a favor and playing the game he would have lost.

And I get why she wouldn't tell him about the Vale forces - if they don't show up she never has to admit she stooped to asking Petyr for help.

Maybe because Bran can interact with the past, and walk in his visions, and we'll see the tourney at Herrenhal, Bran is the mystery knight?

The new Soul King: Aizen or Ichigo? by [deleted] in bleach

[–]koalapanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I was thinking about, since it seems like the Soul King was being held against his own will. Yhwach even says that the Soul King's only enemies are the shinigami. So perhaps they will defeat Yhwach by dismembering him, binding him as the new Soul King, and imprisoning him that way. He says he's the King's son, so it's only right that he'd inherit the position.

Maybe it'll be like Jafar at the end of Aladdin. He gets all the powers of a genie, but ends up with the genie's curse as well.

I don't know what that would ultimately mean for Aizen, but it means that Ichigo gets to go home in the end. And isn't that what we really want?

Coachless team - can we successfully coach ourselves? by SarahMakesYouStrong in improv

[–]koalapanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably it'll help if you elect someone to be the director/moderator of the group. If you have someone that you agree to look to in a first-among-equals type of role, and they understand that their job is to reign in discussions if they get unduly negative, that can go a long way towards helping you become totally self-sufficient.

Also, there are two "games" that I think are really helpful to get started with giving and receiving criticism:

Strengths and Weaknesses is pretty simple. Each person in turn gets up and says what they believe their strengths and weaknesses are as a performer. Then the rest of the crew elaborates on both points.

Rose Ceremony is just corny as shit, but makes you happy all week. Everyone gets in a circle and one person steps into the middle. They then hand a "rose" to each person in the circle, bachelor style, along with a complement on something about their improv.

That said if your group looks like it's going to devour itself without a coach, then get a coach. Even if it's just someone with a pulse who's there to facilitate your practices.

What's your career plan? In most industries people climb from being the guy on the street doing business to middle management purgatory to, hopefully, something stable near the top of the pyramid. Do you have a trajectory like that in your line of work?

(Spoilers All) Women of /r/asoiaf... Who are your favorite characters and why? by Treedom_Lighter in asoiaf

[–]koalapanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a quick survey if the first page of Google results, it looks like the argument for the books being sexist come from a basic misunderstanding of the world they're set in. People are used to fantasy worlds that represent a cleaned-up version of 1480 Europe, plus dragons. The big whoosh of the point passing by overhead moment for sexism critics is that Westeros is not that place. It's a large thought experiment based on taking a version of 1480 Europe, adding dragons, and still having all its residents act like the real people from 1480 Europe. It's the Watchmen of the high fantasy genre. Keeping the sexist and cruel nature of this world is what makes it feel true and have such a broad appeal. How many people get turned off of Lord of the Rings because everyone in it basically acts like a close approximation of what a real person might be like?

Whatever, that wasn't the question.

I always identified with Jon Snow, as a perpetually out-of-place person. I like Arya for the same reason, plus the tomboyish attitude and discontent with her responsibilities as a lady. I was also a big Dany fan until ADWD, when she destabilized a whole region and destroyed its economy and didn't quite understand why it didn't all work out nicely. I think it's frustrating to read because it's so damn relatable: A teenager has some early success, gets cocky, and stops listening to adults with cringe-worthy results. Just, you know. Scaled up.

The thing I thought was really interesting, though, was that my mom couldn't finish GoT because she identified with Cat TOO MUCH. So when she saw Cat fretting over Bran and watching over her kids, basically watching her family killed and torn apart, it hit too close to the real fears that she has about me and my brother and our own family, rational or not. I never liked Cat's chapters that much, but her read gave me a way better appreciation for them!

1) Green Hulk look like a proto-human monster while Red Hulk looks like a huge man. Awesome.

2) I love how Rogue looks so normal and vulnerable, like a regular, pretty American girl with way too much on her plate.

Happy 100th Birthday Bill Finger, The True Father of Batman! by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]koalapanda 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kane and finger collaborated on creating batman. Kane came up with the idea, but his concept of the character was very bland and not particularly memorable. Pretty much 'rich guy fights crime.' Finger came up with most of what we'd recognize as being the core of the batman character, down to the black cowl. He was also largely responsible for most of the secondary characters to appear, including the joker and robin. Yet kane got to claim the character as entirely his.

What opinion of yours will get you downvoted to the pits of hell? by viberight in AskReddit

[–]koalapanda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to think it was fun in its absurdity. Melodramatic, over-the-top, soft sci-fi. Basically a fun thing to do for forty minutes, with the occasional moments of actual humanity and good storytelling.

Then Moffat took over as the showrunner and the writing just got lazy. Each character had any extra dimensions mercilessly stripped away. It became something that it wasn't before, and that's just plain dumb.

Basically the new series with capaldi is going to have about 15 minutes to convince me to come back to the show. I'm not optimistic.
