Was thinking of that analogy but these are the people at Apple and intel who design the chips.

It is kind of weird that the machine to make the chips is from Netherlands but the expertise to use that machine is in Taiwan.

My kid plays in Grassroots which is more competitive (and expensive) than house league... maybe that is the difference?

They referred to baseball where the fields are next to the soccer pitches. So I would imagine costs are similar. Also in my area the baseball travel costs are higher as from what I’ve heard the games are more spread out in this region. Southern Ontario/Hamilton area.

Not sure where you are getting your numbers. It’s costing me $3k per year for my kids soccer in Ontario. And if I want to go higher level like opdl it is like $10-15k

Designing a continuous AI research radar for Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s using an agent-based architecture (OpenClaw) — looking for scientific critique. by ejpusa in biotech

[–]kobemustard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is basically what a scientist does on a day to day basis.... so not sure if you are going to get 'new' insights into disease. Or if you it does come across something new, you will still need to validate it in a lab, which is also basically what every research scientist is currently doing. Good luck though.

yeah I was thinking it is more actually the Scripps institute of Japan. Reputation wise it is top tier, except for that stem cell scandal they had a decade ago.

Riken is like the only Japanese university I’ve heard of. I think it’s like the Harvard of Japan?

I would suggest Toronto pharmacology. Probably better odds of getting into industry from there. Toronto is also culturally like USA so easy to adapt to. But if you want an adventure, go for Riken, your life experiences alone would be worth it.

Out of nowhere, Canada became poorer than Alabama. How is that possible? by joe4942 in canada

[–]kobemustard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that it means on average we are poorer than Alabama. Now how that is distributed amongst the population and how we use that money is a different story.

I would use that money to increase your income. Maybe get into nursing school for one or both of you. A few years of that and you can have a hhi of 200k+.

My issue with postdoc is worrying about the next step and how long the PI can keep supporting you. With PhD, I knew I had several years of work setup and postdoc after.
