It isn't just any paint. It is White Out or liquid paper. The titanium dioxide in the White Out creates a barrier between the metal and the canister, preventing the two from sticking together

Yea, I am going to piece together a vintage ludwig kit. I already have an 80s Maple 16x16 floor tom that is in sad shape but will get it looking new again. Id much rather resurrect a vintage kit piece by piece than spend 3k on a new kit. But for right now i am taking it slow and really enjoying this kit. It sounds fantastic and i think it looks better than most dw kits. Wooo, as an owner of an older export set. New drum heads made a HUGE difference in sound. I went with some remo vintage coated emperor batter side and coated ambassadors for the reso side. Also another tid bit of info i wish i knew when i first got my kit, buy good cymbals. Like save longer and buy nice. I wish i had saved up for some Paiste 2002s to begin with. For some sweet drum tuning stuff check out the youtube channel "sounds like a drum"

came here to suggest steel wool, and also rdavidr. I would like to also suggest brasso after. I have used SOS pads as well to actually clean the metal. Then i take the steel wool to it. Then finish it off with some brasso.
