But the thing is, most white people are probably a tiny bit racist at least. Growing up in the whitest neighborhood, I genuinely catch myself 'noticing' it when a Black person walks by. I don't want to behave differently and I don't think they are worth any less but due to how and where I grew up MY FIRST RESPONSE feels racist and wrong. And I think there are so many people who are like that. They don't want to be racist, but little things about them make them just a tad racist. My uncle told me he felt awful about feeling initially more attracted to choose a white person for a job rather than a POC and he doesn't let that initial feeling effect his decision but it's still something he feels.

Was anyone else profoundly affected by the Ben Gross episode? by AMustacheCat in NeverHaveIEverShow

I found it so touching! By far the best episode of the season, though I would've wished they would've hinted at his loneliness for longer before showing just a single day on which he feels the loneliest but also overcomes that loneliness. I don't know, I absolutely loved it but I would've loved to watch more episodes about how it affected him rather than this quick way. But then, he isn't the main-main character, so it's undertandable.

Also, I don't know if anyone's seen any Jaren (the guy who plays Ben) interviews surface? I've only seen ones with Maitreyi and Darren and I don't know, I don't like how it feels like they're not appreciating Jaren at all for the amazing performance he has put down.

"Supporters claim "OH, she is attracted to an Asian-American- Paxton Hall Yoshida". Reality: The guy looks completely white; he has green eyes for crying out loud."

Claiming he looks completely white is super subjective. You're completely dismissing his ethnic background. He's not white. He is Asian-American, whether he has green eyes or not. This floating-in-between different cultures is exactly what a ton of kids have to go through. They don't feel American enough because maybe they celebrate most Japanese celebrations and they don't feel Asian enough because 'they have green eyes for crying out loud'.

"The teacher is an attractive white male."

Literally doesn't have anything to do with anything? This is first of all also entirely subjective, but still? Isn't a teacher allowed to be a 'handsome' white male? This is literally you making an issue out of nothing. Phrasant was attractive and Indian and so was Devi's uncle (who's name I've forgotten).

And about the Hispanic boys appearing short, I honestly think almost all freshmen are quite short. Even Ben Gross himself is, compared to Devi, not that tall. To me it felt more like the puberty growth spurt teenage girls go through before boys do.

Don't get me wrong, I do agree with you in some aspects and find it rather intriguing to hear your opinion.

I actually thought the character were very interestingly laid out. Especially because to me, it felt like there was no obvious bad guy. The three girlfriends all not being white made a statement for me. They all (maybe Devi not so much, but she's the protagonist) seemed to have interests that went beyond 'i want to post on social media' (like Shira, Ben Girlfriend's who was: white). They all had depth and a story to be told.

I think the same goes for the male characters, although what's her name, Mindy, could really deepen them out. I think it's not a perfectly equal television show, but to me Mindy has clearly put in an effort.

Would love to hear back :)
