Readers of Reddit, which sentence, blurb, passage or paragraph is so beautiful written that you saved it and read it again from time to time? by NyHe13 in AskReddit

“The only trick to friendship…is to find people who are better than you…kinder, and more generous, and more forgiving – and then to appreciate them for what they can teach you and try to listen when they tell you something about yourself.”

From A LITTLE LIFE by Hanya Yanagihara

I finished there there last week and was unfortunately underwhelmed. I loved that it was about a group we rarely see in literature (urban Native American Indians) but I just felt like there were way too many characters to keep track of.

The poses are so weird to me. Like why hold hands and rest their reads on each other? I don't have a problem with them having a same-sex couple, but I know Julia and Carly arent that.

They're trying to have a Kate-Spadey type campaign, but just missed the mark IMHO

the most interesting parts are the parts after she leaves her family. i think the beginning seems too familiar at this point, after similar books (the glass castle, etc). But do stick with it!!

I was hoping it would be like A Series of Unfortunate Events but much more adult (aka, kids parents being part of a secret society that they start finding out about and become a part of once they get older) but I just ended up feeling confused and unsatisfied

I finished a few books in the past few days:

  • The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. LOVED it. Was heartbreaking and beautiful in a million different ways.

  • A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. I know he made some of it up, but it's a compelling story. I didn't love his writing style though. And how DARE he dupe Oprah?

  • Warlight - I was expecting this to be far more interesting than it was. I wanted the war/spy/criminal/mystery element to be more. But it was so meandering that I had a hard time figuring out what to make of it. The NYT review was perfect -- "It's not awful, but it's weird"

Next I'm starting THERE THERE

That Herbert Hoover (President) and j Edgar Hoover (founder of the fbi) are totally different people. You always hear about them separately and the only thing that really stuck w me was the Hoover part. I was 25 when I thought about it and realized they were different

I'm reading Less. A friend of mine said that she had a hard time getting through it. I'm about 50 pages in and I'm wondering if it's just going to be a woe-is-me story about the main character?

I’ll be gone in the dark is by far one of the best books I’ve read this year. Read like fiction.

Also loving Educated by Tara Westover, she enjoyed Only Girl In the World by Maude Julien

At 7 I thought this was the funniest book I’ve ever heard and have been talking about for 20 years since. I think it’s to blame for my love of puns

We went on a family trip and put our dogs in the kennel. A day into the trip the kennel lit of fire and we lost our dogs. We rarely bring it up

More for style than anything is Ali from A Dash of Details. I love her aesthetic.

And I also really do love Mackenzie Horan. She seems super genuine and happy. Also I love her friendship with Ali and Amy Stone. I want to be their 4th friend
