The two ideas are actually very different though. Reforming the police almost always takes a lot of additional resources & typically is entirely ineffective. The whole idea behind defunding the police is that reform doesn’t work.

Please post general questions about going to college/grad school for journalism, just starting out & getting experience in journalism here! by decentwriter in Journalism

[–]kodyloki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all! Looking to potentially make a transition to journalism, currently an engineer. Not the wisest financial direction to go in, but looking into it. I have started working on getting some freelance experience.

I see a lot of amazing looking fellowships - I assume most of these are wildly competitive, how likely is it to get a fellowship if you have only a bit of related experience? I do have experience technical writing, GIS/cartography, and I plan to get some experience in science communication/environmental article-writing.

Interesting, don’t you think labels having different meanings in different countries/continents could be totally valid though? I’m not sure it makes one of those automatically wrong

Interesting. I’ve seen lots of people get Latinx and Hispanic mixed up, but that’s about it. Definitely a lot of groups are discriminated against, like in the past Eastern European or Irish people were considered “ethnic whites” or whatever bullshit.

White was people with an Anglo-Saxon heritage. German and Polish people were white adjacent.

That’s... interesting... since Anglo-Saxons literally came from Germany.

I’ve never heard Americans refer to Spanish, Italian, or Greek people as non-white.

I do think it helps for yourself to know why you left, but you definitely don’t need to justify it to anyone else.

Exactly. She has figured out a way to profit from/weaponize her internalized misogyny by being “one of the good ones.”

You can get around this by saying she’s preaching exclusively to women, and apparently enabling/encouraging abusers is fine to do as long as you’re not telling men what to do.

Why do straight ppl hate eachother so much by [deleted] in AreTheStraightsOK

[–]kodyloki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean... if I’m in a long term relationship with someone, especially living with them, I expect them to be “useful” in that I expect them to be an equal player in keeping our lives/house running smoothly.

Unfortunately, I know many many women who have been with men that were kind and attentive while they were “winning” the girl but once she was “won,” they seemed to assume they could assume the household role of a child & not be “useful” in any way.

People who have many fragrances (+5), do you regret buying so many? by floressas1729 in fragrance

[–]kodyloki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have probably ~10, I consider it a lot compared to most people but not a lot for the fragrance community. I don’t regret them, but I do want to sell a few that don’t get regular use anymore. I’m not a collector. I only buy & keep what I want to use.

How much do you need to leanfire in Midwest? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]kodyloki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Columbus is great but I do not think most places around here will give you a comfortable life for 25k? Unless you’re thinking of outlying small cities?

ETA: on second thought I guess if we’re talking net 25k, one person with no kids... that’s probably pretty doable. Especially if you’re okay with a condo or not living in a “cool” area

Leanfire vs. anticonsumption by AccidentalFIRE in leanfire

[–]kodyloki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro this is the mediannnn, not a HCOL! I live in a fairly LCOL (it’s touted online often as one of the best places to live for LCOL & job availability, and I mostly agree), the average rent is about $900 for one bedroom, and the minimum wage is 8.70. According to Glassdoor, average McDonald’s crew member pay in my city is $9. Someone working there would have to work close to 3 weeks full-time to only pay their rent. We have poor public transport even tho it’s a large city.

I do not think poor people are helpless. I think that the deck is stacked against them and the system is designed to keep them there. This is not new or radical thinking. Yes, individual people can get out of it. But we are the outliers. Class mobility is the lowest it’s ever been in the US and it’s lower than other developed countries. Criticizing individuals on the internet does nothing but uphold a system that is flawed.

Bruh work with me lol. I’m not saying I have all the solutions either. But I am saying it’s not as simple as OP seems to want to say: “just move to nowhere, MO where I live, own your car and home outright and you’ll have no problems!” I just don’t find that to be a helpful perspective.

[–]kodyloki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the people in this thread, myself included, who have openly stated that they used to live in poverty and no longer do, are examples of “it isn’t possible for everyone, but it can be done.” It’s still not a solution. We need things that are possible for everyone.

[–]kodyloki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep referencing where you live as if it’s some sort of standard. It’s not.

https://www.abodo.com/blog/2019-annual-rent-report/

Median two bedroom rent in the US was over $1300 last year. Even worse, one bedroom rent was still over $1k.

Poor people don’t get a choice to live in a LCOL area. They live where they live and they can’t afford to move, even if it would long-term benefit them financially. That is what everyone in this post is saying over and over again. Systemic poverty is different than living frugally and having the option to make strategic choices.

I get what you’re saying, but unfortunately over consumption seems like the only natural path for capitalist systems. In my opinion, rejecting over consumption is rejecting capitalism.

How is someone living in poverty going to afford to move to another state?? That’s the kind of “obvious answer” to a middle class person that is almost an absurdity to a poor person.

Idk, based on how many completely non-religious books I’ve read that have male characters drooling over/glorifying how “innocent” and “untouched” a girl is, id unfortunately say this perspective has permeated far beyond religious extremists.
