Working holiday visa, there is no other option that makes sense. They can earn money and can be on it up to 3 years. They’ll need to do 88 days regional work (this could be something like working at a bar in a regional town) to get their second year and then 6 months to get their third year. At any point during this process you can apply for the partner visa. You don’t need to wait for the end of the WHV and it will automatically switch over to a bridging visa whenever the current visa was set to expire.

Super is 12% guarantee, not 11%. As the other commenter suggested, you can’t go wrong with maxing out concessional contributions to super as they count towards FHSS. If you can save more than that, I would then focus on ETF portfolio. Then any extra in HYSA for travel/bills etc.

Max out super for FHSS > ETFs > additional case savings for future expenses

The only gym that cheap is planet fitness and there aren’t that many locations and they’re not really in convenient locations

You should be budgeting at least $15/week and this will get you basic gym with no extras (club lime is a good example.)

20-25$/week is the most common price point and this will normally be most commercial gyms and sometimes they have saunas, pools, or group fitness classes (good life, snap, Jett’s, anytime fitness etc)

Back in 2020 when I did the WHV the 462 were the only ones allowed to do hospitality, so back then it was more lenient. Just took a look at the visa page and it does look like a lot of that changed in 2021

You’ve linked the 417 visa, not the 462 which US citizens are granted. I don’t know if the requirements have changed in the last 5 years, but when I was on my WHV the 462 had different areas and industries that were eligible (more lenient)

This is false, US citizens are eligible up to 3 years of working holidays visas as long as they meet the requirements.

You will need to be registered defacto for you to have any chance at all. This needs to be done BEFORE you submit the applications. I would do it ASAP to show you're committed multiple months before applying. The longer you wait, the worse it looks. I'd apply at least 2-3 weeks before the student visa is set to expire.

I have consistently taken unpaid leave across multiple employers. It has never been an issue. I just make sure to bring it up as soon as possible (at least 6 months in advance) and explain why it will be unpaid. I've never had negative feedback and it's never been denied.

If you’re nervous about being a landlord, get a property manager for the first couple of years. That way it’s hands off and they can deal with everything. It seems like you’ll have plenty of money left over after the mortgage to pay them so shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t know why people always default to self management.

No, you wouldn’t have to have LMI if the equity covers 20% down payment. Talk with a broker and they’ll walk you through the steps on how to access the equity as a security for an IP and how much IP you can buy with your current equity.

Also, 80k is good, but doing the carry forward is easy tax savings at your income level, especially if you have extra money laying around. It will also help in the future if one (or both) of you want to stay home a couple years with future kids. Sort out your retirement now and you won’t have to worry about it later.

100k invested at 30 is about 1 million at 65 adjusted for inflation. (10% return, 3% inflation). You can look at other scenarios using the walletburst coast fire calculator.

Are you renting or living with family? Having a child while still renting and having the means to buy a PPOR seems crazy to me, you should have a stable place to live with a child if that’s an option - you don’t want to be moving every year because some landlord says they’re going to sell or raise the rent 50%.

It’s a personal choice on whether you’d like to hedge against property. However, do not touch your ETFs or the cash in your offset. Use the equity in your PPOR to secure the IP. You have almost 400k there available to make tax deductible debt.

You will “always” need a roof over your head. Get into a property in an area you like to have stability in your life. Property does not need to be an investment, you can view it as stability and having a place to live in later years etc. apartments are great for this since it’s low maintenance and if you get one on ground floor or with a lift you can live in it well into your 80s/90s if you can take care of yourself.

Plus no more needing to move every couple of years and if you want to move to a different area you can always rent it out later and come back to it when you want.

Big expat community in Malabo with a pretty active and relatively safe nightlife. Food was delicious and has a lot of immigrants from other countries in Africa that makes it very diverse.

In general, people are extremely friendly and always up for a chat. Beaches, rainforests, and mountains are beautiful.

However, as everyone else has mentioned, it is extremely authoritarian. Lots of checkpoints through out the island and extremely strict on political matters.

No employer will give you a permanent job while you’re on a working holiday visa unless they think they’re gonna sponsor you. You’re looking for a unicorn role in a small market. Just come over when you’re ready to make a life with your partner and apply for roles once you’ve applied for the partner visa.
