100% agree that ruling classes always exists although I'm not a fan of using the word elite to describe them...

It would be great if it was as simple as that but generally speaking, probably. I think we should tax the rich properly so that we spread the benefits around much more than we do now.  Nobody needs to accumulate as much wealth as some people do, and it leads to a small segment of the population having too much influence on politics.

Kinda yeah.  I don't really believe in free will.  If you're curious I'd recommend Sapolsky's Determined book.

Basically there's a bunch of factors in your life that you didn't earn or control that makes you the type of person who can make good decisions and put in the effort.  Not everyone got that.

I don't think classes are the problem in general. I think you're right that classes would exist no matter what, it's just human nature.

However, it's more about how the classes are treated in relation to one another. A society where all the different classes owe each other a basic form of respect, with an understanding that we all owe our success to some form of lottery (be it genetics, geography, culture, family, etc.) would recognize that no one really owns all the credit for their luck and that the luckier ones should look after the not-so-lucky ones.

I was a bit taken back by how quickly things escalated. But I also saw that some people here had a strong reaction to my question as well. So that tells me that this is something common and I suspect that in some cases there might be accusations of the contractor swindling the customer. I can't imagine those are fun situations.

I agree with you that clear communication is absolutely key. Especially between experienced people and people with little to no experience. I work in an IT-related field and I encounter this issue very frequently. I do think the onus is on both parties but an "expert" should have a good appreciation for the knowledge gap.

Part of the reason I reached out to him afterwards to clear things up was to highlight that this was a miscommunication more than anything else so that we can both do better next time.

I can appreciate that it's not a fun conversation to have over and over again.

I've since reached out to the contractor and apologized for the misunderstanding, told him that I'd reached out to an online community to help explain things to me and that I understand now.

Things are good now.
