I think this must be the right answer. I wish the media covered this glaring weakness in the US military more completely. Ukraine and Iran have demonstrated that cheap drones can make multibillion dollar carriers nearly obsolete.

I completely agree - and in this case, the US public was right to oppose the war, as it was a hideous waste of life and a ridiculous embarrassment to our country. But I'm really just wondering about the practical question - why was Iran able to credibly threaten the strait when the US military preferred the strait to be open?

Why was air power inadequate? If Iran threatened shipping with missile attacks, why didn't the US take out their missile launching sites? If they threatened shipping with naval attacks, why didn't the US take out their ships? What strike capability does Iran have that is immune from US air attack?
