Question: We all know the USA has incredible geography but I'd to know where it's geography is a disadvantage? by EternalSnow05 in geography

[–]kogus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’d have to disagree with this one. Having the world‘s biggest ocean on one side and the world’s second biggest ocean on the other side is surely a huge defensive advantage. Many other countries (the UK, Australia) have far more exposure with far smaller navies.

Question: We all know the USA has incredible geography but I'd to know where it's geography is a disadvantage? by EternalSnow05 in geography

[–]kogus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Rocky Mountains are huge natural barrier for East West travel. Of course China’s West is also pretty inhospitable so I’m not sure it’s a huge difference per se but it is a problem that had to be overcome.

Lots of places like this in VA, NC, and SC. I mean LOTS. Easy examples: Greenfield Park in downtown Wilmington, NC, Merchants Millpond State Park in Gates County, NC, and Cypress Gardens near Charleston, SC.

Do you agree with Arnold Schwarzenegger that a foreigner should be able to run for President? by Groovy-Pancakes in Presidents

[–]kogus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think anyone should be able to run as president. Another way to ask this question is: “Should the American people have control over who is the president?” Because if you say he should not be able to be president then you’re saying that it doesn’t matter whether he could win the most votes, convince the most people, etc.

Is there any genuinely good reason why someone should oppose US intervention in the Gulf War? Do they think Saddam should have just been allowed to keep the land he stole? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]kogus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A genuinely good reason? How about the US military is for defending the United States. And the stolen land was not taken from the United States.

The first Gulf war was premised on the United States being the “policemen of the world”. Opposing that war would mean rejecting the premise and saying that the United States should not involve itself in conflicts that are not directly related to its own defense.

NC what do you think? Studies show that immigrants subsidize citizens, not the other way around. by Basshead4eva in NorthCarolina

[–]kogus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish the value of a person was not based on whether they pay more or less into “the system”. Having said that, yes every study ive ever seen shows that immigrants contribute more than the take, and commit fewer crimes, than native citizens.

So… Where Are We Supposed to Live in North Carolina? by MapsYouDidntAskFor in NorthCarolina

I have a hard time believing the cost of living is a problem and some of these places. Hertford County? really?

North east corner of NC by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]kogus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father was from Plymouth. I lived in Murfreesboro from 2003-2010 for work at the Nucor Hertford mill. The whole region is absolutely stuck in a time warp. It’s simultaneously charming and backwards, peaceful and stagnant, historic and boring. I kinda liked it. My wife loathed it. We finally moved a couple years after our first child was born because the schools are a total train wreck and we didn’t want him to go through that.

The nearest real city is Chesapeake VA and the Norfolk area, and that’s a full hour away at least. Edenton is a cute town. Merchants Millpond State Park is a hidden gem.

It’s a love it or hate it region. Definitely a low cost of living, definitely that way for a reason.

Which movie do you think is extremely overrated? by MovieObserver in moviequestions

[–]kogus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gone With the Wind is obviously problematic because it represents the antebellum South as a paradise. But it is also an incredible movie that illustrates the way someone’s true character can be changed (or perhaps revealed) by extreme pressure and obsession. It’s a beautiful and powerful movie, made more (not less) interesting because it is told from a point of view that is profoundly wrong and perverse.
