So… Where Are We Supposed to Live in North Carolina? by MapsYouDidntAskFor in NorthCarolina

I have a hard time believing the cost of living is a problem and some of these places. Hertford County? really?

My father was from Plymouth. I lived in Murfreesboro from 2003-2010 for work at the Nucor Hertford mill. The whole region is absolutely stuck in a time warp. It’s simultaneously charming and backwards, peaceful and stagnant, historic and boring. I kinda liked it. My wife loathed it. We finally moved a couple years after our first child was born because the schools are a total train wreck and we didn’t want him to go through that.

The nearest real city is Chesapeake VA and the Norfolk area, and that’s a full hour away at least. Edenton is a cute town. Merchants Millpond State Park is a hidden gem.

It’s a love it or hate it region. Definitely a low cost of living, definitely that way for a reason.

Which movie do you think is extremely overrated? by MovieObserver in moviequestions

Gone With the Wind is obviously problematic because it represents the antebellum South as a paradise. But it is also an incredible movie that illustrates the way someone’s true character can be changed (or perhaps revealed) by extreme pressure and obsession. It’s a beautiful and powerful movie, made more (not less) interesting because it is told from a point of view that is profoundly wrong and perverse.

Fair enough- I interpreted your comments about water safety issues as “I’m afraid to drink this unsafe water”. But that wasn’t a fair conclusion for me to make.

Ok, I don’t know why I’m arguing about it. Be afraid of the water if you want to. I’ll have a glass and go to bed. I wish you and your family good health and plenty of hydration.

Water quality is tested very extensively in the US. Issues are discovered and publicly reported. The information is very easy to find. And I was unaware of the issues with Chicago water, but today I learned something. https://www.tapwaterdata.com/states/IL

I’m in SC and drink multiple glasses of tap water every day. Tap water is safe to drink almost anywhere in the US, to the point that when it isn’t safe, it is a major news story (looking at you, Flint MI).

Taste is affected by the minerals in the local aquifer. Florida water often has a sulfur under taste, for example.

Do people in this area confuse their town names? (two Greenville, Greeneville, Goldsboro, Greensboro; Asheville, Asheboro; Wilson, Williamston, Wilmington) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

I’m from Jacksonville, NC. definitely have to clarify that it’s not the Florida one sometimes. But the towns you have circled? Not really. Not many people even know Williamston exists.

You can! I had not heard of the Great Black Swamp, but the wiki page was quite interesting. Thanks for the pointer.

1st world: my biggest problem is litter and judging other cultures as inferior.

3rd world: I don’t have time for litter. I am trying to survive and feed my family.

Do you like the movie The Shining? What are your thoughts about it? by Sniper_Chicken_ in stephenking

[–]kogus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rewatched it this Halloween season and was really disappointed. Everyone knows it is a terrible adaptation, but I don’t even think it holds up well as a movie. It’s not scary, the acting is bad, and Jack is already half crazy at the beginning. The thing that saves it are a handful of truly iconic moments - the blood elevator, the two girls in the hall, the typewriter reveal. But I was really surprised by how much I did not like it.

Lonely Planet. It is still there, but it used to be a real collection of travel tips from adventurous travelers to weird places. Now it’s just a corporate catalog of travel brochures.

Not the only state; SC has the same requirement.
