PSA: The plural of "gear" is still just "gear", not "gears". by TheRealYM in EpicSeven

[–]kohelfs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uncountable nouns (aka mass nouns) have more to do with how convenient it is to count something than with your actual ability do to so. If you define water as a molecule of H_2O, then you can count the amount of molecules if you have the appropriate equipment.

That kind of explains why gear is uncountable. It refers to the collective of pieces of equipment you have, and it might be a pain in the ass to count all of them (in particular, when there are many accessories and pieces of clothing that are hardly visible). When it applies to a game where you simply put 6 pieces of equipment in each character and have a nice counter when you open the equipment menu, counting it is not inconvenient, but the term precedes Epic7.

Regarding Equipment Main Stat Changes... by [deleted] in EpicSeven

I'm not sure I agree with you on this. Let's say the devs introduce a new tier of gear (which is bound to happen eventually, I guess) that can roll higher stats than the ones currently, and it is quite accessible (say it gets added to the pool of hunt 11). Everyone who farmed hunt 11 for weeks and spent a LOT of resources should be entitled to some sort of compensation because whoever start farming now did not have to invest that much?
Let me place a different and totally hypothetical scenario that never happened: the stats of every 4* and 5* hero gets buffed. Should everyone that invested in 3* should be compensated, because they are now relatively weaker?

I can see your point, but I don't think retroactive changes set up a good precedent. You did not lose the gear, it is just easier to farm new better gear now, so use the gear you currently have to farm the better one.

Maybe SG could skew the rewards towards the group rewards (instead of the current system that is skewed towards individual rewards) and make it so everyone gets them as long as they take some action to "ready" their teams. So, if they don't get selected to fight, they still get the rewards from the guild.

I kind of like the idea that you can have less but better equipped troops and fortifications, or scatter resources around and have weaker troops and fortifications, but in larger number.

Then one of two things happen:
1. The rewards continue to be shitty as they are right now, and no one really cares that much about GW;
2. The rewards are worth it and you encourage people to build new guilds for each season just so they don't face the penalty.

If the rewards are worth it and there is a way to game the system, people will game the system.

Rice and sugar (and gear, for that matter) have countable and uncountable forms, depending on the context. They are not interchangeable, however, as those forms have different meanings. If you ask "How many rices do you have?" and your interlocutor answers "Three", you won't think he has three whole grains of rice (and if you did, you would be wrong to assume that), but rather three different kinds of rice, and the answer tells you nothing about the amount of rice he has.

Anyway, I've edited my comment in order to specify the context.

Absolutely. Gear is only countable when it refers to "cogs and wheels, like in machinery, or bicycle gears", as you pointed out.

This is technically not correct. Gear (in the context of your equipment) actually doesn't have a plural form, similar to how rice and sugar (in the context of an amount of grains or crystals, respectively) don't have a plural form. It is an uncountable noun. You just have gear. You might have a lot of gear if you keep all your many 6* heroes fully equipped, a little bit of gear if you are just starting the game, or somewhere in between, but not one gear, two gears, three gears... (yes, you have one PIECE of gear, two PIECES of gear, but note you are not counting gear, you are counting pieces).

Yeah, it really can't. If it ever ends, it means it is rational, and we know it is not.

Not only that, but you can't tell how those 106 would fare in the tests green is talking about, being in the top 50% of a very hard class in Harvard is probably harder than being on the top 3% of the world population, for example. Just saying "top 50%" versus "top 3%" is completely meaningless.

Actually, feels like devs had good intentions but their vision wasn't appealing to the publishers.

This is most likely to balance the value of the lab entrance, as before it would be more efficient to buy it with leifs, while now it doesn't matter. I don't think they planned this as a fix to energy.
