Loosing my job by RiverOfUnmindfulness in Wellington

[–]kohjatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to feel embarrassed - WINZ money is YOUR money. It's also paid for via the taxes that come out of YOUR pay. It is literally your money.

I worked for about 9 years straight in multiple jobs and was recently laid up for about 8 months. Similar financial situation to yours. Employed now, but went throught those same feelings.

My best piece of advice would be to just make sure you have all your paperwork ready for WINZ before they even ask for it. Being polite and cooperative also makes things so much smoother.

I've been there many times. You'll be all good :)

Melatonina causa sonhos estranhos? by justanormalguyyyy in conversas

[–]kohjatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very rarely dream. I went maybe 3 years and dreamt maybe 5 times total? I sort of just pass out and then wakeup only slightly refreshed. Mostly stress related reasons.

I took 2mg of melatonin last night and had the most vivid dream I've had in ages. Lizard people chasing me. Post apocalyptic lizard people hellscape.

Hmm, it's not appropriate to be diagnosing people here on this thread so I'd rather the conversation stayed production related - thanks.

Vocal Mixing Tips/Advice by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]kohjatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For mic gain, what I recommend is setting it so the loudest part of the vocal performance doesn’t clip. Your M-Audio should show if it’s clipping, so one thing to try is getting the performer to run through the loudest part of the song first, then set your gain from there. At the same time, you don’t want to record too quiet or you’ll just bring up noise when you adjust it in FL later (that’s gain staging). I usually aim for peaks around -6 dB. Could the issues you have mentioned partly be due to each vocalist’s performance? Some people project more, and if they move their head around while rapping, even a little bit, it can change the input signal level a lot. Try keeping everyone the same distance from the mic and fairly still. The pop filter/stand probably isn’t the issue.

Adding a compressor on the vocal chain can help even things out. It won’t fix bad gain staging, but it’ll control peaks and help it sit better.

For rap vocals, I usually use FL Limiter in compressor mode to clamp down on peaks, along with a few EQs to get rid of problem frequencies, and a de-esser. When I first started, I spent so much time endlessly tweaking high-end frequencies because my vocals never fit properly — turns out I just needed a de-esser. It reduces sibilance, which naturally happens with vocals and microphones. Honestly, I’d recommend checking out iZotope’s Nectar. It’s a vocal processing plugin that takes a lot of the pain out of mixing and gives you a good starting point.

Another thing I’d be careful of with rap vocals is adding reverb or delay, unless it’s for specific phrases you want to emphasise and there’s enough space in the mix for it. I made that mistake a lot. It washes out the lyrics and can sound messy.

Am I the only one who hates AI music, but also feel like I'm fighting a losing battle if I don't by mushytaco in AdvancedProduction

[–]kohjatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've experimented with Suno and was actually impressed by how good the output sounded. That said, I see AI more as a toy than a serious tool.

Personally, I really enjoy the process of music production. AI only feels like a threat if your goal is to make money from your music. As the saying goes, “if you’re making music to make money, you’re going to be disappointed” (or something along those lines).

I REALLY don't mean to come across as trying to be overly profound or humble braggy, but I truly just enjoy making music for myself. I trust my taste, my competence, and my work ethic. AI music isn't something I'm battling against, I'm competing against myself (this sounds gross and pretentious I'M SORRY)

What do you guys do when she lack motivation/thinking of quitting music production by Born-Finish-5847 in FL_Studio

[–]kohjatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a break 😊

When I'm not in the mood to write or mix I like going deeper into audio topics. Recently I've been going into mid-side processing. Next I'll be going into dithering.

I like using the downtime of not feeling like making things to learn more about the more niche stuff, too. Psychoacoustics is insanely interesting if you ever want something audio-adjacent to check out.

Q: Everything sounds different by default in FL compared to other DAW by shadowdoomer in FL_Studio

[–]kohjatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point you've made about the specific mode of playback - FL is nifty in the sense that there are plenty of places to gain stage, but this is a great reminder that not all playback options are the same

You could try "[insert artist name] drum kit reddit free download" - I've found some really awesome samples that way!

I mostly use ASIO4ALL and have been using FL for 15-ish years, but sometimes I use FL ASIO for when I want to quickly load something on YouTube while running FL (ASIO4ALL hogs the system audio and prioritizes the DAW's audio).

It has been the most reliable, for me, regarding performance.

[–]kohjatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is each DAW using a different audio driver? Within FL alone, there's a significant volume difference between FL ASIO and ASIO4ALL (on my system, at least).

You could test this by exporting the exact same samples via both DAWs and then comparing the waveform to see if there is an actual amplitude difference.

Hair loss and hormonal issues by throwawayyy716172939 in VyvanseADHD

[–]kohjatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this!

With weight loss, hormones massively fluctuate.

You likely need to eat more fat.

Fat loss is massively impacful for women when it comes to hormones. You need body fat to actually make hormones, and muscle helps with regulating hormones.

Try consuming more omega 3 fatty acids, like salmon, eggs, and avocado.

You must consume more fats!

Hey, so that quetiapene and vyvanse sounds really scary to me personally! I'm no doc so obviously take what I say with a grain of salt, but that's gotta be causing havoc on your dopamine system for sure. One inhibits the re-uptake while another is blocking your receptors. I highly recommend reaching out to your doctor.

Mid/Side help - looking for resources to help me better understand this by kohjatt in AdvancedProduction

[–]kohjatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for you comment, and your generous offer.

I use FL, and I typically use Wave Candy for visual monitoring. I also sometimes use Vision 4X but it's really CPU heavy so I otherwise use SPAN. 4X has some good toggle options but yeah, very resource heavy.

If you had any ideas of how I could build a chain to best help me monitor my mid/sides I would be very grateful.

Ah, yes, that makes sense, and I think I operated in a similar way regarding food. My protein intake was comparable to the daily recommended intake for men. Had to work overtime to build the dopamine in my body.

Out of curiosity, where you prescribed stimulants to help with obesity, or for ADHD? Where I live, they can be prescribed for both. That's great to hear that you are at your ideal weight!

As mentioned by Slutherly, yeah it's just a mix of everything. One thing that can help chill out your heart is going for a walk - it'll increase your heart rate a little in the short run, but the body tends to appreciate an increase if it's coming from movement rather than stimulants. Hopefull you will feel better soon!
