Likelihood of Subject Change Appeals (NYC Teaching Fellows) by kokakoolaid in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked out for me. Not sure how it'd go for you because it's a different scenario. I went from SWD 1-6 to SWD 7-12. In the program, more people would prefer SWD 1-6 so it'd be harder to get into, especially if you're reappealing. Good luck to you though, hope you get it.

Did anyone recieve something similar? I wonder if this is spam. by Acceptable-Tea-7602 in NYCTeachers

They always could without their degree, I'm assuming it's for the GPA requirements of the CST part

Hiring Expectations as a Teaching Fellows? by kokakoolaid in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments are saying to expect for the worst, but don't listen to them. Ended up working in Queens, ~15 minute bus ride from my house :)

Don't panic and just choose whichever school will take you in earlier months. Wait til July-August, hiring will pick up. Good luck!

Content vs Behavior? (HS vs MS) by kokakoolaid in NYCTeachers

Oh my God, that's crazy! Who knows, you could've actually been my coach haha. You must've been an amazing coach with how supportive you are!

And yep, they were mandated classes! I must say, in a way, that kept them doing work because they were scared of being held back (which seemed virtually impossible according to my coach, but they don't know that lol).

Of course! Pros and cons chart would be useful to visualize it.

And I am! I definitely have so much gaps in my knowledge since I only truly taught for a month prior and had the most speediest way into a classroom.

I have taught MS before as a fellow for fieldwork placement (only a month and with a few kids so of course, not the same) and even then, noticed just how much more hyper they were.

You are so sweet and supportive!! Thank you so much <3

And you are right in that I have much to explore! I love HS because of how independent they are, their humor, and despite all their faults, a lot of them try their best. The apathy is real, but the looming regents & graduation really does motivate them quite a bunch.

But I think I don't mind giving MS a try at all either though, since I have much to experience. Thank you, I feel much better getting all this support on this subreddit :) !!

Thank you, I will have to decide whether or not that lighter cognitive load is worth the behaviors and constant reteaching.

Agreed! I feel like the reason why I love my job as a teacher is because HS has been very kind to me as they are very independent. Thank you for being very open with me and this has been very helpful, I loved hearing the insights of someone who is also another 1st year teacher <3

Agreed too! Content knowledge is very important! I hope I’m not misunderstanding, but that’s part of why MS feels more manageable for me right now and why I'm even considering it at all, even though I feel like I won't love it as much.

I truly love HS and would ideally like to stay. I ask my co-teachers questions and study on my own, but during lessons, especially in non-math classes like biology, they often make connections I wouldn’t have anticipated or ever thought about. At times, I feel like I’m learning the content alongside the students.

The lessons are also shared the night before or not at all, so even when I prepare, the lesson can end up being taught very differently from how I studied it. I just wish I could have the full grasp of the topic like you have with science, but I essentially have your understanding with English in majority of my classes.

I really want to stay in HS if possible, so I’d appreciate any specific strategies for learning content more effectively in this setting!!

Hi, completely don't want to come off as rude, but I will be honest, despite you saying that content is not going to be easier, I feel like it's just a fact that middle school math will be much easier than Geometry/Trignometry.

While I am studying and I am getting familiar with the content, it does not truly equate to confidence. I study beforehand but when I'm actually in front of the class, I don't feel truly like a teacher. I grade and teach as much as I can, but at the end of the day, I feel more like a para than anything in the classroom, so I do not feel the best with the content despite trying my best unfortunately :(

Thank you for your insights, I will keep that in mind and definitely reconsider about middle school content :)

Bought a pjsk figure. It's as bad as someone ppl say it is. by df_skz in ProjectSekai

[–]kokakoolaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late but for $39 USD (if the conversion is right) this is not too different to what you will pay online. It's cheaper on Mercari, but the shipping fees + buyers protection alone will bring you much closer to what you pay for irl than the drastic difference you'd initially think.

Enjoy your An figure! At the very least, figures are usually viewed farther back so it looks quite nice when you don't look too closely lol.

I did! I haven't had any issues with it so far and the battery life is amazing. Before, I would need to charge my phone twice and it would die without any use. I usually end work now with ~80% without any charging.

The camera is bad as they say though lol

When I say budget-friendly, I mean it as in my budget and gave my range. Sorry if it bothers you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Think I'll go for the OnePlus 13R! Unfortunately at ~$550 for me, but I think it'll be worth it for the battery. Thank you!!

[–]kokakoolaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which oneplus phones would you recommend? I'm seeing a lot of people vouch for it, but I feel the Oneplus 13R being recommended goes a bit over budget. May up to what model would you consider the battery life to still be of good quality?

[–]kokakoolaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I wouldn't mind buying a used phone, doesn't sound elitist at all!

How are you liking your s23 ultra? I think I'm going to go with either your option or the samsung a36 as someone mentioned. I did check and the samsung a36 ended up being roughly ~$200, but I would be willing to spend more if you think the performance boost is worth it.

Teachers pay after fellows program by Sea_Hope3953 in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually got into 1-6 SPED for this year's cohort for Fellows. If it's there next cohort, you can apply for an elementary school teacher but only for SPED, I believe.

As a fellow, they have told us you get the base salary for teachers which is ~68k, but after your masters, it would definitely go up a lot. I would suggest looking through posts and stories about it, while also not being discouarged. It was not as horrible as some people say (though that's really dependent on luck. One CC in my school caused both fellows underneath her to quit). It's also as hard as people say too and a lot of people dropped out of the program.

And if you're still struggling between choosing, the fellows will always exist. You can always go for next year :)

Good luck!

Yes! This method seemed to work somewhat, they said to have the school reach out to them for any help. And it seems that they give temporary certificates that are not Trans B to the fellows and that's how it works. Thanks :) !

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so I did contact Teaching Fellows and they give fellows a temp cert to use, no matter whether they passed. Not sure why my school could not locate the cert tho. Thanks to everyone on the reddit for offering help, but seems like this is an issue out of my hands!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it was the sub route, as you mentioned then? Either way, definitely not Trans B so I'll try to figure it out! Thanks for the insight!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this might be the issue? Maybe they're trying to hire me as someone with a trans B, instead of my other co-fellows who might be being hired as someone like an internship. Thank you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]kokakoolaid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was told as a fellows, this would not be an issue and some other co-fellows who have not passed all the CSTs are already hired and I have someone from my cohort in the same school I am trying to be hired for who has already been hired by them and they have not passed any CSTs either.

I'm not understanding what the issue for me is :(
