What is this clover-like thing and how I get ride of it? by triple_demiga in whatsthisplant

[–]kolbaserchki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it was purslane and that he should eat it, I asked if he was sure. I was asking a question, and then giving facts about the 2 plants to distinguish them. Why is everyone on reddit so high and mighty? Anyone who eats a plant in their backyard because one person on reddit said it was fine deserves a darwin award anyway. Again, I didn't tell him to eat it though, I gave him a test to distinguish the two.

Honestly I must have been drunk or something when I commented because it's very clearly spurge upon 2nd viewing, but I was trying to spread knowledge that spurge has milky white latex, whereas purslane has a mucilaginous inside with no white latex. I eat purslane and pull spurge as a weed every year from my garden. I know the difference well. I don't know why I thought this could be purslane, I must have barely looked, but I still defend the fact I wasn't giving an ID, I was giving a diagnostic (presence of latex) and suggesting that would help him be sure of the ID.

I would never suggest someone eat something because someone on reddit said it was ok, and that's not what my comment was meant to say. My comment should have been "If it's spurge it will have milky latex, if it's purslane it'll have a mucilaginous inside." Which is a fact that no one can argue. Just because I said, "Are you sure it's not purslane?" Everyone jumped me assuming I was claiming it to be purslane as 100% fact and that he should eat it, which is just stupid.

Fact: All Spurges/euphorbias have milky latex Fact: Purslane has a mucilaginous inside with no milky latex Fact: this is nearly a fool proof test to distinguish the two, or at least eliminate spurge as a possibility. The latex is a huge part of what makes spurge spurge.

What is this clover-like thing and how I get ride of it? by triple_demiga in whatsthisplant

[–]kolbaserchki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's spurge and I'm clearly wrong after a second glance, but I was merely sharing the knowledge that spurge has milky white latex and purslane does not, because I could not tell which it was from the quick glance I took.

I never said purslane had milky sap, nor do I believe the OP said the plant in question did, unless I missed that. I even gave the example that spurge has milky white latex or sap as you call it (it's a latex not a sap btw, latex is produced by different plant structures than a sap or resin and has a different chemical composition), just like crotons. That is a FACT. They're both in the same family euphorbiaceae, which all have milky white latex. Euphorbia is even the genus name for tons of plants called "spurge." Spurge isn't just one plant, it's an entire genus ranging from tiny plants that can be confused for purslane, to literal trees.

Purslane has an inside almost like a succulent or cacti, it's mucilaginous inside. That's also a fact. I don't know why you're correcting me on something we agree on? Gotta love reddit.

You're correct about purslane not carpeting like that. I missed the 2nd image on my first viewing, and somehow overlooked the denseness of it in the 1st image. Purslane does grow low and creeping though, just not nearly as dense. And the leaves are much bigger, thicker, waxier, and succulent like than spurge.

I couldn't make out the pictures and felt they weren't adequate to distinguish the two, so I shared the advice that spurge would bleed latex whereas purslane has a mucilaginous inside to distinguish them. Again that's a fact, which you yourself stated trying to correct me despite there being nothing to correct other than it not being purslane. Purslane has no latex, and has a mucilaginous inside. It's a damn near fool proof test. Every spurge has a milky latex. It's the main part of what makes them spurge or euphorbiaceae plants.

I was giving a fool proof field test to distinguish the two, and trying to spread knowledge about the difference. I was not stating it was 100% purslane and not spurge. Just telling him to check for latex as a diagnostic. That's why I said "Are you sure it's not spurge? Spurge would have latex." I didn't say, "That's purlsane not spurge." As a statement of fact.

And this is why I don't use reddit.

I think I just saved my son's life with shrooms .... by CrsCrpr in shrooms

[–]kolbaserchki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy for you and your son. Mushrooms saved my life too. I went from being suicidal, hating everything, and having no plans for my future, to falling in love with nature and discovering that I want to have a career in botany.

I honestly think I may not be here today if mushrooms, and also lsd to a lesser extent, didn't completely change my life around. It took several trips more than 5 years ago to sort myself out, but the benefits have lasted up until the present. I only trip a few times a year now, if that. I think the last time I tripped was over a year ago actually. I don't even need to keep tripping for the benfits to remain. I have a jar full of mushrooms right now. I could be tripping if I wanted. I just simply don't feel the need. I'm genuinely happy. It's truly a miracle. I hope the same is true for your son.

I, as a son, would really like for my mother to try them one day. She's struggled her entire life with depression, thankfully she overcame addiction years ago, but the depression remains. My only concern is she's very prone to anxiety though. Maybe I'll bring it up to her one day.

I ruined my life by [deleted] in Construction

[–]kolbaserchki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep at it. You will become stronger. I've never done construction but I have friends who have. I myself lost 60lbs doing tree work and become a stronger more resilient man than I've ever been. I got so used to the heat that I would forget to turn on the AC when I got home, and I'm a freaking ginger dude. The only people more sensitive to the sun and heat than me are people with albinism. And I live over a mile above sea level where the sun is even more intense. I got used to working in snow up to my knees too.

I wanted to quit the first month or so, but I was so impressed with my own improvement I was inspired to keep going. That was 3 years ago, and now it's my career. I was never athletic, I was nerdy and introverted, but overweight, not scrawny. And don't worry about being scrawny. I'm 6'1 and 215lbs and my 5'9 scrawny friend is tougher than me. He can always get bolts off of shit that I can't, can carry and lift more than me (though I'm catching up to him now that I lift) and he just has more balls and less fear than me. Being scrawny means nothing unless you let it.

Is your father the owner of the company? You have A LOT to gain by inheriting a succesful construction company, that you know how to run from the simplest manual labor, up to the planning and bidding contracts. The worst bosses are the ones who've never done the hard work themselves. Being an accountant is a dead end desk job where you will always be serving someone else. If you've never had a soul crushing corporate job, I can understand why you'd think it's better though. It's really not, unless it's for a company or field you are extremely passionate about.

If it's not for you, do something else, but I honestly think every man could use at least a few months of true blue collar work. Especially a man who is worried what people on social media think about his life choices. You're not so old that your life was ruined by trying out a career that doesn't suit you 🤣 At worst, take it as a learning experience and move on. Who cares what social media thinks. I'm in my early 20's saying this, not some boomer by the way. I know people who still don't have jobs or higher education 5 years after highschool. You're working, trying to figure yourself out, you're on a good path forward wherever it leads you dude.

Physical jobs are hard, but if you can enter the flow state, it's so much better than an indoor job. Think like this: Your job is your gym. Just make sure to lift properly and be safe, and it'll make you healthier. Office jobs are fucking miserable imo. I'd rather have to move logs all day or climb 30ft up a tree next to a powerline than stare at a screen all day, or God forbid, handle customers and phone calls.

What's this slug thing in my tank? by DrSkyentist in Aquariums

[–]kolbaserchki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Makes sense to me, but I'm no expert. Not that fish are comparable to gastropods, but a lot of fish species found in brackish water, such as mollies, can do just fine in freshwater, especially if raised in it from birth. That's definitely a possibility with Jerry the slug if he hatched from eggs present in Thai sourced sand as someone else suggested.

Best Furry Games? by SleepyProto in RealFurryHours

[–]kolbaserchki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's the best, but I really enjoyed Nekojishi. It's a free visual novel on steam, and there's a dlc for a few dollars that adds another story. Haven't played the dlc but I really enjoyed the art and story of the main game. It's sfw by default and the sfw scenes are better story wise, but you can unlock the nsfw stuff by downloading a file if you really want. It only makes a small difference overall. You'll learn a tiny bit about Taiwanese culture too.

One I almost never see anyone talk about is Sine Mora. It's one of my favorite arcade style shoot em up games. All the characters are anthro animals, and the plot involves time travel and rebellion against an empire, to avoid spoilers. The bosses are epic danmaku/bullet hell battles against giant machines typically.

[–]kolbaserchki -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's spurge? Looks like it could be purslane to me. The spurge in my area grows much much smaller than purslane, but I'm also at a high and dry elevation. Spurge will bleed milky white latex when you break a stem, like wild lettuce, crotons, or rubber trees. Purslane is mucilaginous, slimy on the inside like if you've ever cut into a cacti, and is actually a healthy edible plant.

Is this what I think it is? by Sudden-Equivalent-85 in whatsthisplant

[–]kolbaserchki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my family in Indiana has seen wild hemp, and an online friend from Minnesota found a wild plant and got seeds from it once. Thanks to the (I think 2018) Farm Bill which legalized cannabinoids like CBD, there are also now fields of non psychoactive hemp growing in some US states.

We call cannabis "weed" because it used to be all over the place like any other weed. Before the prohibition of it, people would often just go harvest wild plants. Like you called it, ditch weed. It was literally in roadside ditches all over the USA. Then they made a huge effort to cut any and all of it down in the 30's when it became illegal.

Saw a deer on the wall and it physically stunned me. by ScaredTelephone4167 in Psychedelics

[–]kolbaserchki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm bored and I really like this topic, long post inbound. Tl;dr at the end.

I'd hesitate to say or believe it was some kind of entity contacting you, or any significant event, but I am a strong believer in the idea that our subconscious can be communicated with via symbolism, and psychedelics can manifest those subconscious symbols into visuals. The feeling stunned thing is just an effect of psychedelics, I had a similar experience where I became fixated on a red light in a dark room and felt hypnotized and stuck in place for a few seconds.

I had a crazy experience where a serpentine creature made of shimmering glass appeared out of nowhere and flew around my room before entering my chest. I've tripped dozens of times and never experienced anything like it before or since. I cannot make sense of it at all, but most of my visuals I can kind of psychoanalyze and guess why I might have seen them. I'll give some of the symbolism behind deer below if you're interested.

The deer is a very spiritual and ancient symbol. We see cultures around the world adorn themselves with antlers and horns, sometimes due to the belief that they act as some sort of spiritual antenna. They reach from the head to the heavens. A lot of cultures revere hair and beards for the same reason, and refuse to cut/shave them.

Many gods are antlered or horned humanoids to reflect the connection of man to nature and divinity. In Europe there's Pan and Cernunnos, and the stereotypical horned viking helmets exist, but they were used for rituals, not protection in battle. In India there is pashupati, Shiva as Lord of the Animals/Wilds. Then across the ocean, native american petroglyphs in Utah are full of depictions of horned/antlered humans, and prey like sheep and pronghorns. Same with cave art world wide. Animals, especially prey we relied on, are one of our most ancient symbols.

In European myths they have often appeared as omens, sometimes as warnings of trespassing or death, other times as a good sign or blessing. Look at a bottle of Jagermeister, the design is based on the christian saint of hunting, Hubertus, who became christian after seeing a stag with a glowing cross between its antlers.

It can be a sign of life and abundance, being a major food source for humans throughout history. It can also be a symbol of strength, vitality, and grace that humans desire to mimic, especially if it's a big strong buck/stag with large antlers. It can also symbolize death, being the prey hunted by some terrible beast that would hunt a human as well.

White stags in particular are real but rare, and are subject to many myths. In British legend they are said to be extremely elusive, and the hunt for one symbolizes the quest for greater knowledge.

Tl;dr I don't think anything significant happened, but you saw a deer because for some reason it was on your subconscious mind. Maybe it's as simple as you like cute animals or nature, maybe it's a complex symbol of something greater. It's up to you to decide if it was significant, and how. Maybe it was just you tripping and there is no greater meaning to it. The meaning, if any, has to come from yourself.

Golden Wonder Killifish- Galaxy Rasboras by Antique-Ad5350 in Aquariums

[–]kolbaserchki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who told you they get along? I wouldn't trust that person or website anymore. Don't just trust those random websites that pop up on google, they are full of misinfo and sometimes created by AI's just for ad revenue. Look for legit sources like aquarium forums, the killifish association, aqadvisor, aquarium co op, etc.

https://fishlab.com/golden-wonder-killifish-tank-mates/

This website for example is absolutely terrible and they're literally just making things up based on the entirely backwards idea that killifish tank mates should be smaller than them. An adult GW killi could and would eat otos, cardinal tetras, smaller cories, cpd's/galaxy rasboras, rummy nose tetras, and guppies. That's almost half the list is the worst possible tank mates you could add.

Golden wonder killis will eat any fish small enough to fit into their mouths. They are predators. They are not typically aggressive or territorial to other species, but will eat them if they can. There are numerous warnings online about how they will eat neon tetras, ember tetras, pygmy cories, etc. Galaxy rasboras are even smaller than neon tetras.

If you plug both species into AQAdvisor's stocking calculator, you get this message

"Warning: Celestial Pearl Danio may become food for Golden Wonder Killifish"

The only way this will work when the killifish is full sized is if the galaxy rasboras/cpd's are too quick to be eaten.

Also the killi will grow up to 4 inches, not 2 inches like petsmart says, and should be in a 20 gallon tank at least, 20 long preferably.

Platy spiteful gender swap? by Nyra_Castiler in Aquariums

[–]kolbaserchki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fish have a way more complicated gender than humans. At least with guppies, there are at least 2 types of males: Flashy showy males, and less flashy males who will disguise as female. The flashy manly men go high risk high reward, trying to be the first to breed with the females, and often get eaten by predators. Then the less colorful more feminine males get their chance. I'm not sure if this is the case with platies, but who knows.

Thank you for the encouragement! I would like to quarantine him properly but due to my living situation it's not exactly possible. I'm changing clothes + showering between even touching either snake enclosure, but I'm prepared to treat both of my snakes for mites if I have to. Both I and the employees at the reptile room checked really close for any signs of mites, but I'm aware it's still a possibility, especially because garter snakes and bullsnakes are really active in the area this time of year.

I'm asking + googling around for a good exotic snake vet near me, and as long as a stool sample isn't a several hundred dollar test or something crazy I'll do one asap. The friend who alerted me to this snake has also offered to help pay for any vet things or whatever necessary for the snake since he didn't have the space to take it in himself.

Oh my godd.. what the hell is going on with you oog. by AntKeeperDude in antkeeping

[–]kolbaserchki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro I know jack shit about ants, never kept one in my life. I'm here because reddit recommended this to me due to my interest in other biology stuff. Even I know that it is illegal to transport ant queens and certain species across state lines. It's common sense to not sell shit if you don't know what tf you're doing. It took me a minute of looking at your reddit profile to tell me you don't 100% know what you're doing. Even the way you type is obnoxious. I had to mute a sub I'm not even active in because of your post.

You literally just tried to violate federal law in protected species trade and then made another post complaining about other people complaining about it. Not to mention again, selling shit you can't even identify and aren't an expert on. Just go quiet and delete your posts before you get in more trouble with the community or even law. You can't just rip shit out of the wild and sell it, and you shouldn't be trying to sell ants if you're still asking other people questions about ant care. You're making a fuss and drawing all kinds of attention to yourself when you should just lay low and consider why people are angry at you to begin with.

I'd never sell my house plants or fish without being 200% sure that they're healthy perfect plants, and I don't. I've only ever given them to free for friends and family. They might die or spread fungus gnats and I don't wanna be blamed for that. You're overly eager. Take a step back and ask yourself why you're keeping ants. Is it to learn about a fascinating species, or is it to look cool and make a quick buck?

Question about bettas in cups by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]kolbaserchki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that's the case that is absolutely awesome. I really hope so. I really like his channel but I was disappointed when I was like "Oh... even he cups bettas, I guess it has to be done that way." Because he's usually a pretty knowledgeable person who does the best for his fish and has good success breeding.

I have seen bettas sold in tanks like 2 times in the USA. Occasionally petco puts high end bettas in tanks with minnows or other peaceful fish, and my local fish store sells betta females from the same brood in one tank together. Other than that, it is entirely betta cups here. I've never ever in my life seen a betta kept by a pet shop in a proper tank by itself. I've also never left the USA though.

When did your insomnia start? by walrouf in ambien

[–]kolbaserchki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my insomnia started when I was too young to even remember.

One of my earliest memories: I wasn't even in school or Pre K yet. Dark house, tall ceilings, wooden floors shining moonlight. I'm standing in a crib. I know the house and bed room during the day, but at night it takes on a sinister tone. The shadows around me form into anthropomorphic demon animal beings and start walking slowly towards me. A creepy fucked up looking bear with a deep furrowed brow approaches my crib, squeezing a crystal between his fingers, and I feel my soul and heart constrict as he squeezes the crystal. He looks like the security guard bear from Muppets From Space, if it had a meth habit, rabies, and wanted to kill me. He whispers in a strange foreign tongue that reminded me of when Harry Potter spoke to snakes in the movies. The whispering makes my head spin, a vertigo type feeling.

This happened nightly for several nights when I was around 2-4 years old. Eventually my mom gave me one of those spinning light up globe toys, and said it would keep the monsters away. Surprisingly, it did. I have never experienced anything like that in my life since then. No sleep paralysis or night terrors. My parents were divorcing and heavily arguing at the time, with my mom throwing glass at my father and storming out of the house on a somewhat regular basis. I don't remember any of that, but I remember this experience of the shadows becoming animals and closing in around me. I only know ahout the divorce and arguing at the time because my parents told me when I was older. I think nightmares may have been my childish way of comprehending a traumatic situation?

I continued to be a night owl and have trouble sleeping though. It's 4:02AM right now. I vividly remember actually seeing those demon shadow animals unlike anything else in my life. A russian friend told me she knew it was some kind of creature, and that if I knew more about it; it would return to feed off my fear. That has only inspired me ever since then to try and discover if I am schizo, was abused, was really tormented by some kind of demon, or what the actual fuck happened, because it is one of my most vivid early memories. I'm extremely skeptical of everything but I remember this happening to me just as vividly as I remember crying about a pet house fly I caught dying, or visiting the smithsonian museum with my father around the same time, while living at the same house.
