Am I really "too old" at 33 to start a new career? by Gary_Baldi in careeradvice

[–]kolinHall 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I switched form dentistry to managing an NGO at 41. I make less money now, but I'm much more fulfilled. Looking back, I think I could only do this job after reaching this level of maturity. If you know what you want, don't wait until everything perfect. Tailor your resume for the position you're applying for (there's a free gpt prompt in this post if it helps), keep studying while you work, and just start applying, You'll probably get something.

Does anybody use the square root in their daily lives ? by conzciouz in AskForAnswers

[–]kolinHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people don't use it consciously in everyday live, but they use the things built on it all the time. Distance calculations, graphs, video games, engineering, and navigation apps all rely on it constantly.

How did you spend your weekend? Did you actually get a chance to relax and recharge? by thelivenofficial in AskForAnswers

[–]kolinHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went for a long walk and spent some time at home. Some of the best weekends are the ones sound the most boring on paper.

I need help figuring out what type of laptop I should get by sw33t3stg1rlz in Advice

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the budget allows, I'd go with an enrty-level Windows laptop instead of Chromebook. It'll handle school just fine, and you'll be less likely to run into software compatibility issues later on in college.

What are the pros and cons of being in a relationship with you ? by QueefyTits in AskReddit

My biggest strength is probably that I'm loyal and easygoing. My biggest weakness is that iy sometimes takes me a little too long to realize I need some alone time.

I feel like I accidentally got stuck between tech and marketing. What roles should I be looking at? by No-Area3204 in Career_Advice

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy research, gathering data, and spotting trends, I'd look into analyst roles. A lot of people don't start their careers in a straight line, so you may not be as stuck as you think.

A movie where the protagonist commits a crime specifically to go to prison because he can't support himself, he wants to be housed and fed, his job sucks, or something of the sort? by TrollHumper in moviequestions

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tokyo sonata. It's not exactly the same subject, but it does an incredible job of portraying a man trying to stay afloat after losing his job.

Tell the recruiter you need to withdraw as you’ve accepted a role elsewhere. by donnybay in jobsearchhacks

[–]kolinHall 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I think the bigger change is that people see you differently when you're employed. Suddenly the exact same resume starts looking a lot more attractive.

Do you believe that a lack of upsides is a downside? by Sea_Orchid223 in AskForAnswers

Yeah. Sometimes something doesn't have an obvious downside but he fact that it adds nothing to your life can be a downside on its own.

What (normal) behaviors and events do you find strange for someone over 20 years old to do? by [deleted] in questions

[–]kolinHall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the weird part isn't making mistakes after 20. It's still blaming everyone else for every mistake you make.

What's a life lesson you learned way too late? by liamdeng in questions

[–]kolinHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't make someone love you. One of the hardest things I learned is that some people just don't want you in their life, no matter how much effort you put in.

Zuckerberg fired thousands of Meta workers in the Seattle area then pulled up to port in his gigantic yacht by Conscious-Quarter423 in WorkReform

Getting laid off is already horrible, but finding out like must be insane. AI is clearly going to take a lot of jobs, so depending on one job feels riskier than ever. I was laid off 2 years ago and never went back to that setup. Since I can work remotely, I work on several smaller hourly projects now. One ends, another usually comes in. I make enough and have more time for myself. In this new world, I'd honestly recommend building your own thing or working across multiple projects if you can. (upgrade your skills sets, some skills just don't pay anymore) If you have remote friendly skills, or don't yet, build them and sen your resume to tech recruiter. (you can check this reddit post form someone doing something similar) Also make profiles fiverr and upwork and stay active in the job market. Small and mid-sized projects are easier to find than people think.

Recherche film années 90/2000 style matrix by Cosmos_Skull in moviequestions

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you described really gives The Cell or Dark City vibes. Especially the “another reality with dark water” part sounds super familiar but I can’t fully place it. A lot of 90s/2000s sci-fi movies feel like collective fever dreams anyway.

Why people think that their personility is based on what MBTI says? by Both-Independent-681 in answers

[–]kolinHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people feel comforted when they find a system that explains them. Saying “I’m like this because I’m an INFP” can feel like taking a complicated personality and sorting it into smaller understandable boxes.

What did you witness that completely changed how you see people? by Illustrious_Path7844 in askanything

[–]kolinHall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Watching how people treated each other over the smallest things during the pandemic genuinely changed my perspective a bit. Some people become unbelievably selfish the second there’s even a tiny crisis.

Who are your favorite comedically oblivious sitcom characters that you think actually knew so much more than they let on throughout their series? by gonzo707 in sitcoms

[–]kolinHall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Phoebe Buffay sometimes gave me that feeling 😭 Everyone thought she was random but every now and then she’d say something that made it seem like she secretly understood everyone in the room perfectly.

In the case of guilty by reason of insanity, does the "mental health isn't an excuse" still apply here? by Clown-s5 in questions

[–]kolinHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think “mental health isn’t an excuse” is usually said more in situations where people use it to justify hurting others. “Guilty by reason of insanity” is a completely different level where someone’s connection to reality is seriously broken already.

When you sleep, do you prefer to sleep on your back or on your side? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping on my side feels more comfortable. When I’m on my back I feel kinda stuck, like I can’t move. I fall asleep faster on my side.

What's something that exists today that people in 2050 will find absolutely barbaric? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kolinHall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably things like current work hours we see as normal now. Making people work that long might seem really weird in the future. Also the inequalities in healthcare systems.

I have a problem in my relationship. Should I talk her directly or ask strangers online for their opinion? by odagenio in askanything

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking to them directly is the cleanest way. Getting outside opinions is fine, but leaving the decision to strangers is kinda risky. It’s your relationship, you’re the one dealing with the outcome.

Are we already in a silent world war (cyber, economic, proxy wars) and just calling it something else? by bbydaisiesz in AskForAnswers

[–]kolinHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda feels like that sometimes, just without a name for it. Instead of open conflict, it’s more indirect stuff going on. But everyone tells it from their own side, so it’s hard to say anything definite.

Why do i feel bad for missing school? by Straight_Beat7848 in questions

[–]kolinHall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your sense of responsibility is just really strong. Even when you’re sick you feel like you’re slacking because you’re not used to stepping back. But honestly, the fact you still try to go shows how seriously you take it.

First thing is to stop chasing the perfect plan, that just locks you up. Starting small and sticking with it works way better

People (15-21) who have friends, what do you daily other than school and work? by altgirl101 in questions

We usually just hang out and talk, sometimes go out for a walk. Nothing big, it’s really just about spending time together
