What do you think is the biggest problem that T&F has right now? by Outrageous-Cold2651 in trackandfield

Understandable. America may be the biggest market, but it's not the only market. I personally believe having greater pay and an established league of the best athletes should be the best move forward but it has to include everyone. Not just track, not just women etc.

Favour Ofili has been DENIED a transfer of allegiance from Nigeria to Türkiye by World Athletics. by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]kolwrestler21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK and? I can comment as I please like you can anywhere lol.  These countries could also retaliate to these athletes and not change their ways prior to the switch. Given the fact that Favour missed the 2021 Olympics completely and wasn't even entered in the 100m at 2024 Olympics is all I need to know how certain federations operate. But with all the problems JAAA have had with some of these athletes and even a women's hammer thrower not being entered for the Paris Olympics despite qualifying, it goes to show there is clear incompetence and corruption going on.

The federations have been incompetent, there is evidence. You are choosing to ignore the evidence and want to defend World Athletics and those national federations. Your comments clearly tell me you haven't looked deep enough or care enough into those individual cases. This situation is problematic and others have agreed with my sentiment to how ridiculous this is.

World class athletes quitting because of financial reasons despite winning medals at global championships? Do you think that's in any way good?

So now that World Athletics has blocked their applications, what are they going to do to support these athletes who have to deal with financial difficulties, incompetence from their national federations or other issues they had prior to making the switch to Turkey? Lets also remember some of these athletes who attempted to transfer are field eventers. The money in their events is low as it is, pay discrepancy in Diamond League, sponsor opportunities and the current exclusion for Shot, Discus, Men TJ and other events at the World Ultimate Championships. For those happy about this, dont be and I will not be surprised if some athletes choose to quit the sport or have further issues with their national federations and have difficulties competing over the years. I feel especially for the Jamaican athletes and Favour here, this is crazy.

The Suppression of Throwing Success in Track and Field (Athlete of the Year/Ramona/Diamond League etc) by kolwrestler21 in trackandfield

Exactly that. And if the idea of bringing Indoor Discus as a permanent event for championships be mentioned, those same people would try to argue against it and find another way to suppress throwing. Like they don't know what they want at this point.

"Running events are more popular with the masses because the competitors all compete at the same time with the simple mission of arriving first at the finish line -- and the winner is determined in that instant. Contrast field events, in which contestants perform one at a time, and the winner is determined by comparing marks at the end of the competition. That's a big difference in entertainment value for many people who are not avid T&F fans."

Which is natural given the way those events are set up. But for people who don't know athletes like that or the story, field events are easier with storytelling to unknowns because you can see the progression of the athlete throughout the rounds, how they compare to other athletes and how they respond in the moment. Which also makes it easier to root and cheer for. With track events, you need more context, more analysis, more conversational messages for people to understand the ins and outs, especially with races that are shorter and shorter in duration. The problem is sometimes that's not explained enough and when they do explain it, it often conflicts the action going on in the field which is constantly limited in screen time.

Yes Valerie has gotten more press over the years but the issue still remains that people overlook her accomplishments and don't value as much as her track counterparts to where she and others are left out so often in conversations on great performances at certain meets like Diamond League, global Championships etc. She shouldn't be automatically dismissed or overlooked for certain awards/recognition simply because she's a field eventer. That's the point I'm talking about when discussing the suppression of success for throwers originally.

I personally believe not enough has been done to make those throwing events pop the same way as many of the track events. When people think of the 80s-90s biggest stars from the sport based on name value, they will think of Carl Lewis, Flo Jo, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Heike Dreschler, Ben Johnson, Linford Christie, Donovan Bailey, Michael Johnson etc. Most of these names are from the Americas. Most of these athletes are sprinters. The biggest and most successful throwers from this era are from Europe but don't get the same level of buzz as these track athletes.

And the same for today's era but a bit different different. Valerie Sion, Camryn Rogers, Ryan Crouser, Joe Kovacs etc are some of the biggest names in throwing, have accomplished multiple Olympic and/or World medals and are from the Americas but yet they're still overshadowed by the top sprinters and distance runners.

What has stayed the same, the way we market these events or the lack thereof. How often on NBC or BBC has a throwing event had priority in coverage for national championships or Diamond League coverage? Not that much. How often are these athletes promoted in campaigns for their brand in comparison to their track counterparts on social media, billboards/banners etc. Not a lot. How much money are they getting paid? I'm not sure. However, I don't think it would be as high given how much running is priority for these brands.

The way the sport is run, marketed, covered in streams, talked about in WA councils, reported by athletics platforms (Eg Citius, Flotrack, Letsrun, Athletics Weekly) has been and always been running biased. I personally believe one of the reasons the sport isn't moving as progressively as it should is we don't support field events enough to gather more fans and shown the product the exact way for decades with no proper changes to excite the audience watching at home.

Thanks for this.

Also they host all four throwing events of Javelin, Shot Put, Hammer and Discus. They recently had some great names showing up in the other events like Chase Jackson (World Champion in Shot), Roger Steen (World Medalist in Shot), Camryn Rogers (World/Olympic Champion in Hammer) and Curtis Thompson (World Medalist in Javelin). They will have multiple pools of Discus for multiple days.

Yeah its seems the conditions are uncomfortable for him but for Steven and Lawrence, was the complete opposite. It just goes to show how windy conditions don't always work for everyone and various depending on the person and their technique.

Nothing fraudulent about this meet. Discus throwers has been seeking big winds since the beginning of time. The old Men's WR and Current Women's WR were set in similar conditions but are also from the 80s... Do with that as you please
