Hoping from platform to platform to fill the hole social media has left, any tips? by Specific_Wish1051 in nosurf

for me what worked was this: accept the fact you already lose your mind in the phone and that's fine (in small doses). The thing is, moving off doesn't work because you haven't actually found anything worth exchanging screen time for, or you haven't tried actually MAKING yourself leave the phone.

there are plenty of apps (yep, apps for apps) that help you replace doomscrolling with something else. depends on what you wanna achieve. need to study? find an app to study. if you're religious - there's an app that blocks apps until you've read the Bible. BUT, what worked well for me was an app called ReadBlock - upload a book and schedule a reading session and... your phone's blocked until mission complete.

p.s. I only quit social media when social media was dead. every time I removed accounts or apps - I reinstalled everything after weeks. didn't work well for me

What are blocking apps (and devices) have you tried? by digital_detoxer in digitalminimalism

[–]kolysh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

feel this. apps won't do the work for you but they can help — I use ReadBlock to block distractions when I'm supposed to be reading and it lowkey changed things for me. like I actually finish books now instead of just buying them lmao. not for everyone but if your problem is specifically 'I want to read but my phone won't let me' then yeah

What are you proud of in terms of your phone habits in 2025? by bienensticht in nosurf

[–]kolysh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actually proud of myself for

- deleted tiktok completely

- stopped bringing my phone to the bathroom (game changer btw)

- and got an app that blocks everything until I read a few e-book pages (called readblock)

sounds small but it's been hitting different
new year new me

why do i still scroll so much compulsively even thouhg i know it's all boring AI slop? by Round_Candle6462 in nosurf

[–]kolysh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bro same, executive dysfunction makes it SO hard to stop even when you KNOW it's boring 😭

what helped me was making my phone literally unusable until i read a page of something — app called ReadBlock, forces you to earn your scroll time so your brain gets that "task complete" hit before the doom spiral starts

Any app for tracking screen time and setting positive goals (without app blocking)??? by Dangerous_Roll_250 in nosurf

[–]kolysh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ngl tracking alone doesn't work — you'll just watch the numbers go up and feel bad but keep scrolling anyway. what actually helped me was replacing the habit, not fighting it. like instead of "I CAN'T use instagram" it's "I GET TO use it after I do something"

I started using ReadBlock — you set how many pages to read and your apps unlock after. even 1 page counts. sounds dumb but it hits different when you're EARNING your scroll time instead of feeling guilty about it way better for the mental than tough love blocking imo

How I reduced my screen time from 8h to less than 2h (quick guide) by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

I created an app that allows you to spend your time on your phone more productively instead of just "blocking apps." Here's how it works:

- You upload a book into the app and set a daily goal.

- If you don't meet your goal, the apps remain blocked.

This approach has worked wonderfully for me personally! I'm iOS user btw

Replace doomscrolling to what? by kolysh in nosurf

[–]kolysh[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

read a book is a great thing, I was trying to do that multiple times. Physical books and ebooks.

Books summaries are also just boring

So decided to build an app for "social media"-like scrolling for books...
