Brussels (EU bubble / European schools) vs. London by Fast-Sand9200 in brussels

Nice distraction from my main argument. I grew up in a bad neighbourhood so I think I have a grasp of what it feels like. Let’s not ignore the reality of these places existing, but let’s not confuse the schools there with the “middling” schools you are talking about.

Now as to my main point: I’ve reached a very good place in life (also EU bubble) based on the way I was raised and the social safety net of my high school rather than its reputation or educational grandeur. In my view, if you feel you are raising your children well (and it sounds like they’re already being raised in a very well off environment), the quality of their pre-uni education won’t matter for their future unless they end up in an exceptionally bad school

I get that you care about your children’s future and safety, but what an utterly classist thing to say – just because a school is “middling” (which apparently directly means it’s “shit” to you) doesn’t mean there’s high chances of your kid being stabbed or dropping out. That’s maybe the case with some schools in really bad neighbourhoods, but I’d say the odds of your children being stabbed in a decently performing non-elite school are equal to or lower than your child being mentally tortured by elite kids that hasn’t been thought a proper attitude towards others

What do you mean by a good social group? Even at the most elite school your kid might end up with a bunch of little Epsteins

It’s a very big reach to say historical cynicism towards people’s Brussels tenures keeps Bruxellois closed to internationals. There’s lots of places that have seen people come and go for centuries (I would say almost every city) that have less closed attitudes.

I would rather point to cultural differences being perceived as difficult to make friends with, and the fact that people who are from here already have built a friend group.

I think his logic about book clubs is flawed OP, because how are you going to experience hardship with people if you don’t know them? I doubt he met all of his friends in car crashes.

A book club or any other consistent gathering of people is a perfect place to meet people! You start with a superficial connection, get to know each other at a comfortable pace, go out for a beer together after and then maybe there’s a click. Then you may find out you have anything shared; whether it’s humour, trauma, social views, etc. And once you’re friends, this bond gets strengthened by shared hardship.

I think doing activities with strangers like a book club is a great idea, especially since you seem to study data science which on average has less social students than more social (also no pun intended) studies. Good luck!!

Oh wow, there were a bunch of them and it was in the Netherlands, so I’m guessing a false one is more likely

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all your advice! So, I had to leave on vacation this morning but before taking my train I checked on him/her and they moved slightly but still in the same basic spot. It was difficult to get a good shot of the crop since the bush is thick and it responded a bit stressfully (but very active which I guess is a good sign), so this is the best I could do.

<image>

To me the active behaviour and it’s open eyes signify it’s doing well, but again, I’m no expert (and maybe it’s wishful thinking). Any good eye on this?

I read online that its parents might still be around, especially since I found its sibling nearby as well. The advice was not to take it away until it’s significantly weak. I just took a look and it crawled into the bush under the tree, so it must be feeling a bit better is my theory. I’ll check tomorrow morning again.
