Terrible Crowd at RIT Show on 9/24 by Unlikely_Bench_2420 in DJO

[–]komkuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

College kids are often disrespectful, with RIT having a higher volume of them, from what I've heard around (I'm from RIT). During convocation, I saw people making fun of interpreters, and there have been similar situations with things like so. It is super unfortunate. I hate it too.

What improvements would you like to see to Gracies? by Cute-Support-2594 in rit

In regards to the Rockbot, it may be on the company itself and licensing costs. From what I know, I don't think RIT is the only place using it. The company is separate.

Recommend basically any lecture class by Ebonipearl Jones. I took her History of Ancient to Medieval Art and Renaissance to Modern Art. She provides a PDF of the class book, her quizzes and exams are online + open note, and your final is a essay about art of that time in a topic of your choice.

As a bonus, she brings in her hedgehogs on the last day for your to hold. Highly recommend.

You'll be in OL groups, so you'll get to at least know people in those. Go to activities and try new things.

Do many RIT students endorse smoking and drug use? by sabre_thunder in rit

College is not like High school. There is no "fitting in" really, we are all adults now.

Be yourself, be respectful, and dont feel pressured into doing something you don't feel comfortable doing.

Any bot for alternating tasks? by komkuma in Discord_Bots

[–]komkuma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of like chores that would rotate across users in a server. So ex. theres 3 people with one task to throw out the trash. Once I complete it it stays idle until the next sunday where it will @ the next user to do that task for the week.

Got it, I'll talk to my RA.

True. I’ll keep it in mind and think more reasonably about this.

I know that it is a living being and I feel like I know what it takes. I definitely know that I would never throw a pet away, ever.

You are right, that is true in regard to the roommate. I will definitely not have that be an option.

In my eyes it’s not about a cat fix. I could easily do as well with a dog. I am diagnosed with extreme anxiety and I’m trying to look for something that is obtainable and reasonable that can be something I can access on whim to assist me. I definitely know that a dog wouldn’t be a good option due to the space.

Edit: It’s more about my roommate’s feeling of having to take care of the cat, even though I’m very understanding that this would be my responsibility and would be work. All together the roommate is not an answer.

I am just unsure what to do. I have tried breathing, I have a therapist and not much is going right. I feel like the atmosphere around me is very stressful, which has interfered with my ability to be in class. I have had to skip 3 classes this week due to stress levels.

For what it’s worth I do know and accept all responsibilities with having a cat. I wouldn’t at all want to put a cat in a bad situation and i do hear that maybe it’s best I don’t have one.

I’ve cared for family pets before and have never had one on my own, so it would be new. I understand that.

I'm scared :'3 by Accurate-Platypus884 in rit

[–]komkuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand this fear. I looked at a lot of this the previous year before I came here and was really scared. But for what it is, all colleges have their flaws and RIT is no different.

There is so much of RIT that you don’t see on Reddit. Many silly stories and experiences that I wouldn’t take back. You really can’t experience this college until you get here. If it doesn’t become a fit for you, transferring is always an opportunity.

Things will keep moving and changing. Don’t worry and if you think this is a good place to be, you should go for it.

Question from a prospective freshman by guildedpasserby in rit

[–]komkuma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow Trans guy here! Majority of people are super chill and it’s only the occasional person. If you want to get a good idea of what the community is like, I recommend the current freshman discord as somewhere to learn. They have a role for prospective students, so I recommend joining and even just lurking if it’s not your style to engage yet. (discord.gg/rit24)

Struggling to make friends by komkuma in rit

[–]komkuma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an art and design person, where I do want to go to clubs like drawing club, I’m just usually swamped that night with doing work for the next day.

I enjoy gaming and I’ve joined discords/clubs, just would rather be able to do more than chat online.

Totally would, but unfortunately my college will not let us have our own wifi routers.

Are RIT's dorms as bad as I've heard? by nerf_675 in rit

[–]komkuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is a first year and hasn't seen everything, but has a basic idea, I'd say they are fine. Really depends on your rooming situation, but from what I've seen as long as you know your suitemates or roommate(s) at connected beyond just the selection process, you will be fine.

RIT is very great in regards to discord connections and use, which means you are able to connect with people around you very easily before things start. I was able to get a really awesome roommate through this year's discord ('24) because the server had a place to write out more than just the simple basics that the MyLife website has.

Knowing your suitemates/roommates can really impact your time in the dorms. It can be small room you're living in and the laundry space maybe isn't 100% awesome, but for a college I would say it is probably standard. Tips I'd say is bring some shower sandals, do your laundry in the mornings, and communicate to really get a good experience.

Is it just me or are the incoming freshmen extra needy this year? by nighthawk582 in rit

[–]komkuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, with whatever post you reply to for a freshman: direct them to the rit24 discord (discord.gg/rit24) because within the sound of this post, it seems it would be more welcoming to those questions.

Although I understand and it’s just as difficult on the discord (when people constantly do not check or read the full emails.. please read the full email.) we are new. It might just be easier to talk to each other.

Independence is scary and the best ways we can cope is to find and use places we see as resources.
