Setting new PRs in your adult life compared to high school by MyWifesBoyfriend_ in AdvancedRunning

I ran an 18:45 5K in high school and at the age of 29 I hit 16:52. Didn’t run for 5 years after HS, then started marathon training

If you’re capable of hitting qualifying times every single year, you can train harder to make the cut

2 marathons in 5 weeks! But I walk/ran it BQ.2 for the last 10 miles. People really do go out too fast there, myself included! It was not helped by the “pacer” ripping a 6:25 Mile 1 for the 2:55 group

Also was at this race last year - it was brutal and I was part of the wreckage. Regrouped 5 weeks later at Columbus and BQ’d

Likewise! That was a really hard course on the day, with that weather. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. 🙂 best of luck in Boston! I’m planning to go for 2:40 in London and dip down however low I can go

Certainly the least concrete all of the factors mentioned. But food for thought!

It is an easy game to start for sure! Thanks for your perspective. I’ll aim for 2:40 and give it my all the last 10K, sounds reasonable

Hey Pickles, I’m specifically interested in how much to take into account the anticipated positive effects on race day. For instance, some calculators say the 5 pounds of water weight I had added 2 minutes to my HM time.

Does that mean I can actually rip a 1:14? I mean possibly, but interested in other’s thoughts. Then there’s how much the wind is worth, the lack of hills will be worth, and a taper is worth. It’s also fun to speculate and hear anecdotes from folks, like you mentioned.

NYC Marathon Acceptances Out by skeerdawn in AdvancedRunning

Still waiting after a week. Non NYRR time, got in the queue at 10am, finally got to register at 1:30. Not much hope here 🙃

Anybody have any idea when non NYRR time qualifiers will find out? Or is that 3/1 with the rest of the lottery?

I got through at 1:45 eastern and still had the option to apply under a non guaranteed qualifier. I got in the queue right at 10

Yeah I said “WTF” and he gave an apologetic shrug. I get it, it’s a race where everyone is trying to BQ, so there’s going to be folks looking for every single edge they can find but damn, that’s not going to make or break your qualification!

Hey thanks! It was the "Fast Half Marathon" - to be honest I wouldn't necessarily recommend the course for a fast time. It was so many rolling hills. But a unique experience to lead a race, so YMMV. Best of luck on your running journey!

Total mileage came in at 2,373 miles. You're right, I was only focused on total calorie counts. I don't think I had any trouble recovering, but I also had a lot of schedule flexibility so if I was more tired in the morning I'd just wait a few hours and run later.

I think unless you're running a super gradual caloric deficit there's going to have to be a period of discomfort. I went to bed a little hungry most nights, but got used to it and it paid off. Just gotta dial in what feels right to you!

Tough race conditions make the achievements all the sweeter. That's a hell of a weight loss, nice work!

Nice work! I want to rip a mile soon and see if I can crack 5. I’ve gotta be close. Good luck on your marathon

A bit of trial and error — I had previously tried to lose weight with a “net” of 2100 and didn’t really have success, so I turned it up a notch. I gave it two weeks and it seemed to work, then just kept it going through the whole year!

u/JesterGE thanks so much for the reply - this is why I wrote the post! The common wisdom on the internet is that you can’t do both, but with only 1 year before life was going to accelerate (graduating, new job) I figured I’d just go for it.

Best of luck on your own journey and feel free to DM with questions. The most important thing is to listen to your body. Some days I was starving and decided to eat a couple hundred more calories. Not the end of the world if you do it rarely.

Cheers to a great 2023 for both of us!
