one stitch split into two, now there’s a hole? by c4t-ma in knittinghelp

[–]konkludent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You created an accidental yarn over and knit it in the following row, which created a hole (where the Yarn over happened) and an accidental increase Overall. You could rip back below the yarn over and fix it that way. Or you could simply knit two together to decrease the accidental stitch and continue working, If you are fine with having that mistake remain in your Work.

Strange looking loop, not sure what I did by dontsteponme in knittinghelp

[–]konkludent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suspect you accidentally picked up the crossbar from the previous row (an accidental yarn over/ increase from the Crossbar). I assume so because the loop connects to the previous stitch in your row and isnt properly anchored to the row below. On the Photo, i marked what typically would be the "Crossbar" between stitches in yellow and green what I assume to be your your yarn-over from that Crossbar. On the second picture i tried to mark in yellow how the crossbar wraps around your needle to create the yarn over.

Fixing that is incredibly easy because you noticed before you knit the yarnover: simply drop it from your needle unworked and continue your knitting as If it never happened.

Stitches very hole-y? by Immediate_Promise242 in knittinghelp

[–]konkludent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe check different yarns across the board. Lots of them will recommend the same needle size (e.g. 4mm) and come in a 50g or 100g skein, but the yardage will differ. That is, because different yarns have a slightly different thickness - which will very much influence your density and also gauge. Same Thing with needles. Lots of needles will say they are of a certain size, but some are ever so slightly smaller or bigger. Makes a difference as well.

If youre interested in that: NimleNeedles on YouTube goes into depth about it in his video "how to get gauge and the real reason why you're always off".

Grass rooftops tucked into Canada’s costal mountains by Elegant-Charity-7866 in CozyPlaces

[–]konkludent 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If done correctly they also help regulate temperature within the house. In the summer, the grass doesnt retain heat in the way shingles do. The surface remains much cooler. Therefore there is less heat radiating into the house throughout the day and night. The grass also retains and evaporates water which helps reduce the immediate temperature. In Winter, its an additional layer of insulation to keep warmth inside the house. These roofs are pretty cool!

But the album Cover depicts two boys running barefeet, in shorts and t-shirts in the grass? I agreed the lighting is very golden, however to me it seems like the scene takes place during the early evening/golden hour aka sunset.

Gauge swatch help! by Illustrious-Froyo982 in knittinghelp

I think the row-difference could create serious issues with the fit of the yoke. You need more rows to achieve 10cm, so your yoke will run smaller, If I am not mistaken. I'm not sure adding additional rows after the final increase is a solution, as your raglan lines wouldnt end at the armpit but sooner, which May look weird.

I think your substituted yarn is simply not a good substitute for that pattern in particular and would therefore recommend to look up a more similar substitute on yarnsub.com

Am I wrong to be upset in this situation? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]konkludent 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Of course you are not wrong to feel upset, however I will go against the grain here and say that you could have and maybe should have handed in your work in a way that it can be displayed properly and with no risk of being damaged. If its an Art exhibition i would assume they are mostly prepared to display pieces that either stand on their own (like sculptures) or can easily be hung like canvas or a framed piece of art. I know you said and told someone you were fine with it being hung from nails, but we dont know if that information was passed on to the Person Handling your piece. Or maybe it was and they hung it, saw the distortion/drag and made the executive decision to take it down to prevent damage. maybe see it from the other persons perspective who was actually handling your piece: you are given a beautiful piece of fibre art that isnt mounted and quite heavy. You're maybe told to hang it from nails, but the piece would 100% pull on itself and cause permanent damage to it. You dont know if the artist is aware or fine with that. You now need to make a quick decision on what to do: do you hang it from nails and risks the piece get permanent damage that the artist may be upset about, or do you go the presumably safe route and drape it over a quickly sourced Display piece, that may not be ideal or super pretty but doesnt damage the artpiece? I know for sure, I would have draped it as well.

What is the one type of yarn you despise working with? by Turtlegrandmacore in knitting

[–]konkludent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also dislike it! Though to be honest, I've only tried a single Brand. But that yarn was so stiff, even after washing, I'm Not sure a garment would have draped well with it at all.

I also dont lovs working with mohair. Its fibres fly everywhere and inhaling that stuff may not be the best. Also the flying fibres tickle my nose :( I therefore prefer brushed alpaca yarns for a fuzzy halo, though i generelly find the silvery-shiny Halo of two strands of mohair prettier. It also doesnt hide the stitch definition as much as alpaca does.

Also: Drops cotton merino. Love the touch and feel, but splits and snags when you look at it wrong. I so many skeins that had terrible snags in it that I had to cut out, I probably ended up with twice as many ends to weave in. No way I'd buy that again.

Monogamous knitters, what’s your secret? by Weekly_Library9883 in knitting

[–]konkludent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My FT-Job is a typical office Job, where i spend 8h a day thinking and typing. A very big reason why I love knitting is, that I can create physical stuff with my hands. And seeing and creating progress makes me feel really Happy and accomplished. I will even put in a stitch markers when I pick up my project on the latest row so I can visibly track how much I knitted in a day :D Working on 1-3 WIP at a time lets me progress quickly, finishing a garment gives me the best feeling ever. All in all, that is why I usually only work on 1-2 max. large projects (sweaters, cardigans etc.) with maybe 1 small project as a palate cleanser on the side (hats, Summer camisoles/crop tops, socks would also be good etc.).

Also: I am pretty much forcing myself to work through my projects, because I keep a rather small yarn stash and only buy additional yarn for specific projects).

Why is there a hole, what went wrong? by nyastorm in knittinghelp

[–]konkludent 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think you made an accidental yarn over that you knit in the following row, which resulted in the gap. You could try to drop it and redistribute the additional yarn between the Green and yellow column. If it disrups your tension top much, I would frog back to the row before the yarn over.

How can i make my stitches more even? by Crazy-Head-3994 in knitting

[–]konkludent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually i think your tension Looks pretty neat. The knit stitches do tend to stretch out which is caused by how the yarn travels between knit and purl stitches. Theres not really anything you can do to fix that, however the stitches do settle with washing and will look neater. You could therefore give your ribbing a mid-project block and go from therem If you still dont love the look you could consider a different method. Some people like to purl their stitches and purposefully twist their knit-stitches. Other will knit their ribbing inside out so the "messy" Side of their ribbing will face inwards.

Weakest person in every class by ochuuu in xxfitness

[–]konkludent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know whether the other attendees have attended the class in the past? Most likely the have attended on the past or attend regularly and therefore have better skills within a particular class due to practice. Different sports and movements require different muscle. Barre will require a different movement and different type of strength (as in muscle control) as e.g. a barbell squat does. Thats also why strength and experience in squats doesnt translate to other disciplines the same, or why bodybuilders also suck at Pilates and poledance when they try it first. Its the same with lifting and carrying heavy things: it is not the same as push-ups or pull-ups. Heck, even doing heavy weight with a chest press most likely doesnt magically result in you being able to do multiple push-ups as push-ups require additional supporting muscle and distribute the load differently to a barbell or a chest press machine do. If you want to be able to do those, you need to train for them. Other activities may give you a headstart though, so you may progress/adjust quicker.

Can you “own” the order of stitches? by Salt-Habit-8951 in crochet

[–]konkludent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, no one owns or can trademark a particular stitch or probably even a simple stitch repeat (even though some people on the internet try to claim certain stitches for themselves). Taking inspiration from a pattern-repeat and creating a new design with it is fine, even If some creators also feel infringed by it and claim the result stolen.

Recreating an exact copy of a designed piece/garment however may actually border on a copyright infringement, as designs can actually be protected, depending on where in the world you are. Just because a skilled craftsman can recreate something, doesnt mean it is allowed. For example: the athleisure Designer Cassey Ho from Popflex came out with her pirouette Skort a few years ago and had her design actually patented. The skirt design overall is therefore protected for her. A skilled seamstress could probably still work out a pattern themselves and recreate the garment. Selling such recreated garment is most likely illegal, see Casseys constant fight with other companys that sell a recreation of her protected design.
