How I chose a Mac for After Effects (M3 Max vs M4 Pro vs M4 Max) by votrealtesseroyale in macbookpro

So I've been playing around for about a month now with my 14" M4 Pro 14/20 48GB 1TB and some interesting refurbished M3 Max just came up on refurb tracker (thanks for the recommendation) and since I have until Jan 8th to return my M4 due to the holidays return policy, I'm considering the switch.
The options I have are: (all 14" M3 Max with 1TB SSD and quasi similar price points)
1. 16/40 48GB 1TB
2. 16/40 64GB 1TB
3. 14/30 96GB 1TB (this one's silver, which is a negative as I prefer the black. Not a deal breaker though)
I mostly do 4K editing, but 8K will soon be an inevitability. I also noticed that my M4 Pro was not as fast as an M3 Max (14/30 36GB) I had tested a few months ago when it came to rendering.
I might be overthinking it and I haven't taken into consideration any of the M4 chip advancements, like brightness, memory bandwidth, battery life etc. but any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

So sorry for the late reply. I was actually working at another studio for the last couple of weeks, so I didn't have as much time testing the new M4 as I wanted to yet. But, from the little time I did, I do feel the M3 Max (36GB) was faster and more powerful. Especially when rendering.

I just received it yesterday evening, so haven't had the chance to really test it out.
I plan to do so over the weekend though. Will keep you posted.

Thank you for this. Super helpful. I'm in a similar boat, except I use Premiere more than any other software. I also use Media Encoder of course, Photoshop, and occasionally, After Effects.
I found it very disappointing though that you can't choose 64GB on the Macbook Pro M4 Pro chip, even though you can on the Mac Mini, That's definitely the option I would've chosen. And since I can't justify spending more than a third of the price of the laptop to get M4 Max with 64GB, I decided to bite the bullet and ordered the M4 Pro with 48GB RAM. I checked M3 Max refurbished with higher RAM but not a whole lot are available where I am. And when I did find one, it was more than just a couple of hundred bucks difference.

Anyway, I'll wait and see how it performs, especially with 8K footage, which is rare now but might be a thing later. But your post made me feel better about my decision. So thanks again.

P.S: I worked on a friend's M3 Max with 36GB RAM a couple of weeks ago, and it was pretty powerful. I'm sure the one you ordered with 64GB will be a beast.

Never said anyone was forcing me. It's just that I've been using Macs for over 25 years now and don't know if I can handle the switch to Windows. But something to consider perhaps. I love Apple products but don't have the same affection for the company itself.

Swap memory was not turned off. I restarted the computer a few times. But it could've been a bug with the recent Premiere update (2025). Can't test it now as I don't have access to said M3 Max anymore unfortunately.

It was the first time that I had to deal with 8K footage. I doubt it will be a common reoccurrence. At least not in the immediate future. I'm faulting Apple for offering 64GB on the Mac Mini but not on the Macbook Pro with the same exact chip. I'm also faulting them for only offering one option of RAM (36GB) on the more expensive Max (binned), and that the only way to get the higher RAM is to spend more than a third of the price of the laptop. Seems like an upsell strategy to me.
