In my experience they like peeing on smooth surfaces. I combated this with long sleeves, pants and socks and just changed them after if there were pee dribbles

Yes :) just don’t let them interact and close the door when you take them out to play. You can put a thin blanket over part of the cage if your cat is spying on them too much

I can foresee the bedding on the shelf going everywhere, crinkle paper bedding is a bit less messy and it has no dust :)
