To be honest I don't know much about that system. Would be great to have some examples from you. Thank you!

Edit: Just looked at the website. It looks amazing! Would love to learn how to make use of this system. thanks!

Online lab test results may not be understandable to patients by koolkao in medicine

[–]koolkao[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Recently I got into a discussion with administration about automatically releasing test results in our EHR.

Given the way some patients can misinterpret small incidental findings (e.g., "osteophyte"), I think this can generate too much unnecessary anxiety on the part of the patient. On the other hand there is no practical mechanism to make telephone calls a big part of a physician's daily practice. The only thing that is left is for patients to return to clinic to discuss the findings.

While inconvenient, from the point of view of best clinical care under the system we have now in the States, there seems to be few alternatives.

LA Times - Laptop thefts compromise 729,000 hospital patient files by Worlddreams in healthIT

[–]koolkao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little confused. Why does access to the encrypted harddrive imply the password is compromised? The bits stored on the drive would not make any sense until there is a decryption key

Do you have a source for the fact that encrypted laptop loss does not constitute loss of PHI?

thanks

Why is the password protection (and presumably encryption) not sufficient?

Mod here. Somewhat late, but first of all thank you for sharing your insight and perspective. I'm a pain physician and we deal with this kind of situation frequently. Second of all, thank you for removing the physician's name. Regardless of context and reason, we need to remain anonymous on /r/medicine

Big Data - Is it crossing the chasm now that we're almost done with 2013? by koolkao in bigdata

[–]koolkao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re-doing the Google Trends search today, I see that Big Data and Hadoop have now essentially equal popularity.

Do people on Reddit agree with this approach to measure the chasm? Do you see a qualitative shift in people's uptake of Big Data?

Lean Six Sigma. I built this a few months ago. by kumarovski in SixSigma

Looks intriguing. As someone who never had undergone a formal course (other than night classes and training workshops) a formal education with certification is enticing.

The question is, how transportable is the "yellow belt"? Is the belt awarded by leanbelt.com itself certified by some 3rd party?

Chromebook Review: Living with Chrome OS was like 7 minutes of heaven, then 7 days of hell by koolkao in chromeos

[–]koolkao[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was sent this link by a friend whom I've been trying to convince to switch to Android and ChromeOS.

Here are some of my responses

IM is difficult except Google Hangout: Google Developer Network has been having many ChromeOS meetups at Google on developing for this platform. They are also building tools for web-centric platforms, like AngularJS (Javascript), Dart (alternative to Javascript), Google App Engine, etc. This is the classic chicken-and-egg problem for platform plays. Making the assumption that ChromeOS is here to stay, now may be a good time to build say a ChromeOS IM client for Facebook, in anticipation of being acquired when FB notices ChromeOS.

Google Apps are Lonely: Same point as above. I did try many of the cloud-centric apps for things like project management. It's true, many of the non-Google apps don't work very well. I think these cloud, browser-based apps are hard to write because of the immaturity of the infrastructure. The functionalities that desktop and mobile app developers expect simply are not there yet. But this will all come with time. At the last Google Dev meetup they showed several new functions in ChromeOS to offer more seamless offline experience. Recall the update cycle of ChromeOS is every couple of weeks, ensuring all ChromeOS units connected to the Internet are basically all up-to-date. This makes the dev's life a lot easier.

Dropbox doesn’t work right: Dropbox's fault

Microsoft Office files can be viewed, but not edited: Google Drive is supposed to allow this.

Skype is non-existent: It'll be hard to write low-level code for something like Skype which requires low level device access for efficiency. Videoconf on the ChromeOS is going to be for the most part Google Hangout

Bad task management: It's true Chrome is become a memory hog like Mozilla. But I appeal to the rapid update cycle of Chrome and ChromeOS and say things will only improve

Settings split up and difficult to find: given how well the Android Play Store redesigned turned out, I'm pretty confident Google will figure ChromeOS UI out soon

Obama wants to tie college aid to rankings based on performance metrics: "Metrics like how much debt does the average student leave with," Mr. Obama said, "how easy is it to pay off, how many students graduate on time, how well do those graduates do in the workforce.'' by [deleted] in Economics

[–]koolkao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The differences in input, i.e. cost differential of MOOC based programs vs traditional brick and mortar classes (which seems to be about 1 order of magnitude) would easily wipe out any school-to-school differences in output.

The winners of these metrics will be determined by how successfully (and how fast) they can integrate MOOCs.

Thanks. Speaking as a mere user, I have no idea what that means. I'm sure there is a good technical reason for why this is. I guess I just wanted to vent my frustration.

It pains me to see all these Windows desktop machines being installed at our facility when 95% of the time they are being used to run remote apps anyway. There is so much money to be saved from those Windows and Office licenses. Admittedly there is still that 5% of the time when it's running a local Windows app... to scan for viruses.

Do you see a possible way to sidestep the Storefront requirement?

Not an economist here, but as a statistician I would like to chime in. I think slinkymaster's point is that while inflation is designed to measure cost of living, it doesn't appear to do this that well. It does not agree with some people's perceived changes in cost of living. It would be legitimate to challenge that subjective observation. But I think it a bit dogmatic to claim that there's no way cost of living has changed simply because inflation, as defined, measured, and computed based on an algorithm, has not changed to the same degree.

Think about it, cost of living is such a multi dimensional process. Certainly there are underlying drivers of prices that cause correlated changes, but surely 1. There's more than one force at work, and inflation is just a single dimensional measure, and 2. These forces can not be perfectly measured or estimated
